How to handle criticism with mindfulness
Mindfulness Daily Check-In July 27th to July 29th 2026
When we are being criticised we need to take a pause,look at out physical and emotional reactions without judgment. Meditation decreases self-criticism. Self-criticism is another form of judgement. There are several mental habits make us vulnerable to self-criticism. Example: I am good at doing this so I will keep doing it but I am not good at this so I won't do it.
Meditation means finding the perfect state of mind we need to proceed with our lives. Some people see self-criticism as a form of a personality feature ( I am my worst critic ). People are sometimes harder on themselves then they are with other people.
We all are sometimes leary about getting feedback from others because we may feel like a failure, not good at a job, and how we may represent ourselves to others. Some feedback can also be a positive thing, and feedback is what we need to live in the world. We take it as a learning curve and fix what areas need to be worked on, so it does not happen again.
Feedback should never be used to belittle or judge someone. It should be used to educate someone on something that did not go as that person planned. You may of meant to explain something one way but it came out another way.
When we receive feedback, we can work on area's needing improvement and better ourselves as a person. We want to have no worries in life but a little feedback can be helpful in certain circumstances. Receiving feedback means we should listen to what is being told to us without feeling the need to lash back at the person trying to help you.

When criticism is constructive it's fine but when it's hurtful , I try to take the time to process things and reflect on the fact that not everything that is said is true 🥰

Can criticism be a helpful learning thing for you?
Constructive criticism helps me to grow. I will listen to it and reflect on it. If it's criticism to hurt me I usually ignore it unless I see somehow a valid point in it which needs attention.
@pamharley003 I’m not sure. The person who criticizes me the most is my husband. The things he says is so mean, it’s hard for me to listen and not get defensive. I find myself asking him if he loves me throughout every argument because he describes me as such a failure. When I ask him if he still loves me, he says I am being manipulative. I try to tell myself the mean things he says aren’t true, but what if I am actually being manipulative??
@amiableLime9845
you are not being manipulative, his rudeness should not be happening and I am sorry he treats you this way. You are unique and one of a kind. He sounds like he is having a hard time with something and is taking it out on you.
@amiableLime9845 I hear you. i feel the same way too when I get criticised. Its hard not to get defensive and lash out at the other person. In my case, I feel that the tone and body language make a huge difference in how the criticism/ feedback is delivered. I sense a lot of shaming and I am unable to take that. Long after the interaction, I can still remember the words and how I felt and I think it is because of the derisive body language.
@pamharley003I think criticism can be uncomfortable, but it can also be one of the fastest ways to grow. One thing that's helped me is trying not to decide immediately whether the feedback is right or wrong. If I can stay curious instead of defensive, I usually learn something, even if it's just understanding how someone else experienced the situation. Not every criticism needs to be accepted, but I think every piece of feedback is worth considering before deciding what to do with it.
I'm usually alright with constructive criticism. It depends on how it's delivered.
