Rewiring your anxious brain involves preventing it from falling into the trap of overthinking. We all experience moments when we overthink things to the point that we can no longer think clearly. One thought can lead to another, and soon we find ourselves spiraling into a cycle of overthinking.

Overthinking is defined as repeatedly thinking about something for an extended period. Our minds can become anxious for various reasons, such as starting a new job, facing a looming deadline, preparing for a college exam, or worrying about an upcoming medical surgery.

There are three main types of overthinking: rumination, future tripping, and overanalyzing. Rumination is the mental process of excessive and repetitive thinking about the past. Future tripping involves imagining potential scenarios about the future and contemplating how to manage them. Overanalyzing occurs when we think so much about something that we struggle to make a clear decision.

Ways to rewire your anxious brain:

Mindfulness and Self-Awareness: Actively identify by physical, emotional, and cognitive strategies to overcome our minds into calming down.

Challenging thoughts: Challenge what is making you anxious and come to a term of settling it so it does not become a constant problem.

Grounding techniques: try using the 5,4,3,2,1 method. 5- look at things you can see, 4- find four things to touch, 3- listen to 3 things, different sounds. 2- tasting 2 different things, and 1- one thing you can smell.

How can you control your overthinking?

Thank you, 'future tripping' is the crux of my discontent. I've found a book on Amazon Unlimited I'll read shortly on manifesting, as i'm considering buying a manifesting journal to provide some structure. I'm currently writing letters too myself daily but they are more stream of consciousness ramblings, cathartic but not particularly helpful for reflection and tracking progress.

What helps me:

Music.

Prayer.

Taking time to just chill and do something spontaneous and fun.

Taking things one day and one item at a time 🩷

Challenging my thoughts, asking for proof and self affirmations that I will manage no matter what help me with overthinking

I definitely suffer from future tripping...my dad does the same, he learnt it from his enviroument, it's always very difficult to speak or try an reason with people of his home town bc they are always anxious of a million crazy possibility and never see what is so obviously the case infront of them. It's an issue bc they'll judge you very hard always for something you haven't even done bc they think you might. It's a very negative, non-trusting kind of mentality... I'm happy I have moved but like you said my brain is set this way and it's not enough to move.. I need to rewire it.

@pamharley003 I tend to ruminate and over analyze. I do use grounding and challenge and reframe thoughts. It's still a work in progress

I never heard of future tripping until I read this post, so thank you for raising awareness about the different types of overthinking. I think I do all of these at some point. I always rumminate, doing meditation, reframing thourghts and rating how big a problem is, are somethings which I do. Doing work on self love has helped me think more positively and stop the constant thourghts. It's still a work in progress.
