Good Morning everyone from this side of the planet laugh

Many of you have already heard about the “technique to do the opposite of what you feel” surprise, some of you might be practising it already.

Doing the opposite can mean that when you're going through a particularly rough time and just want to stay in bed, you take for example a gratitude walk. Walking is therapeutic in itself. But this is just an example.

Today I like to ask you to share your experiences with doing the opposite of what you feel in rough times.

enlightened How does it help you?

enlightened What are the pros and cons for you?

enlightened If you haven’t tried out this technique would you consider doing it for a few times so see if it’s something to do in your coping tool box?

Hi @amiablePeace77.

I agree with your idea of doing what is "opposite" of our feelings when we are low.

Answering your questions, below:

enlightened How does it help you?

It helped me feel better. I faced my fears and conquered them. Had I not done it, I would still feel very bad.

enlightened What are the pros and cons for you?

Pros: Realised how I made a mountain out of a molehill by overthinking & getting the work done.

Cons: It frightened me & I felt intimidated in the beginning.

enlightened If you haven’t tried out this technique would you consider doing it for a few times so see if it’s something to do in your coping tool box?

Earlier, the coping tool was plainly ignoring or suppressing it. It had worked but not in the long term.

@alphav7

Thanks for your answer. In my view it's something very helpful short term but at the end the root problem has to be addressed.

enlightened How does it help you?

when I do a task I pretend I am done and that I am cleaning up so the task gets done.

enlightened What are the pros and cons for you?

Pro is that once I did something I feel good. The con is if it does not get done I feel back because it is something else I add to my next day chore

enlightened If you haven’t tried out this technique would you consider doing it for a few times so see if it’s something to do in your coping tool box?

I am game to try anything new

Today I like to ask you to share your experiences with doing the opposite of what you feel in rough times.

enlightened How does it help you? It helps when I want to postpone things that need to be done like dishes.

enlightened What are the pros and cons for you? If I do not do the dishes it only builds up in my mind. If I do them it is over and done with. I like doing dishes to podcasts so it is easier.

I hear you, it just feels better not having to remind yourself constantly that the dishes still have to be done. smiley

I just realized that I use it for example when I need to exercise. Since I really don't like it and I am never in a mood for that. How does it help you? It helps me to get my things done from time to time. For example, I feel really good when I finish exercising so I try to focus on that.. What are the pros and cons for you? To be quite honest, I used this technique unconsciously so in the future, I will try to do it deliberately too, to see the difference. Pros: it can help you to finish your tasks. It's not applicable to everything, but if it helps you with at least one thing, then why not. Cons: it does not work always, especially if you have problems with procrastination.

@neonSpring3394

Good to hear you're doing it unconsciously already. I believe doing the oppositeof a negative reaction intentionally can help to break the resistence in our minds to give in to certain behaviours but of course it's not a solution for everything. Procastrination can be tough to cope with, it's need a lot of self compassion to me.

@amiablePeace77 Thank you for the link. I agree with you. I will try to continue listening this in the morning. I can't do loner versions of meditation yet, so this one is something I can do.

I did this today actually. I ended up listening to people on my listener account. I also decided to give some support on another website. It actually felt good as I'm used to giving in to my worries and doubts. I feel it will get easier from now on to do the opposite - At least I hope!

Today I like to ask you to share your experiences with doing the opposite of what you feel in rough times.

enlightened How does it help you? It helps by keeping strucutre and routine in your life, no matter how you may be feeling and that in turn generates lots more for you in so many ways

enlightened What are the pros and cons for you? It builds up your reliance and get up and go, regardless of how you may be feeling and the cons are that,...well, i can't think of any possible cons wink

enlightened If you haven’t tried out this technique would you consider doing it for a few times so see if it’s something to do in your coping tool box? I already do this all the time in my life. I just do what I have to go, keep on going, make more and more plans to do and accomplish things and pretty soon, you get a well deserved break and you know you earned it and it is nice
