Mindfulness Daily Check-In April 5, 2019

Hello lovely community. smiley. I like to wish you all a great weekend.

Today I would like to bring up again the importance of gratitude prayer, what does not need to be always religious. Below is something I read and found very interesting.

Neurobiological effects of prayer show up in the areas of the brain that have to do with attention, memory and self-control, Dopamine increases in these areas whilst stress chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine decrease.

We all have times were we are not careful about what we allow to enter into our mind - e.g. last thoughts before dropping off to sleep are negative.

So today's question is:

enlightened Do you consciously try to focus on something positive before falling asleep. This can be a gratitude prayer or a positive imagination or something else which helps to create a positive and peaceful mind.

Happy weekend! What a lovely post. I honestly just fall asleep without any awareness. I have insomnia, so it can be hard to fall asleep when I want to. However, keeping gratitude in mind can definitely make things easier for me. I'll try it out. :)

@lovelyWhisper66

Hi Whisper, sorry you suffer from insomia, it must be hard to get through the days at times without having the required energy levels which are usually build up during sleep. I hope that focussing on something positive will help you to calm the mind. Would be nice to hear if you feel any differences.

I try and think of all the positive things that happened today before I fall asleep. It usually helps with not having bad dreams or worrying at night.

Zule, that's great. We all need to sleep well to recover from the day's work.

HI Peace thank you for this great check-in on gratitude.smiley I personally think showing gratitude is very mindful and also good for everyone to do. As dealing with life and mental health issues- we can rapidly go deeper into all the negative thinking and feelings of ourselves. Thinking of the positives and being thankful for them brings in some happiness, joy and contentment that we all need to remain balancedheart

@RumpleSteeleSkin

Rumple, remain balanced is an important aspect. Must say, I was not too good in that in the last days 😒 but what I learned here helped me a lot and I am thankful for it. So this is what I remember as well before sleep and write something into my gratitude journal too.

Great post,

To start off sorry for not replying to any check in's recently the time of year makes it hard with exams and final projects that I was not mindful of being prepared well in advance for whoopsie.

Truthfully to your question on focusing on something positive before falling asleep I can say no I do not tend to do this often. I have the bad habit on being on the phone and falling asleep on the phone (do not follow in my footsteps) which I am trying to change. I do think that I might try to focus on something positive before falling asleep, lets make that a goal for me and see how that might end up changing a outlook who knows.

Hopefully you are having a good day and week

@KarrotCake

Thank you so much for sharing today. Exams and projects can be very time consuming so it is understandable that your focus was on what had priority. Having a phone or ipad close to bed can be tempting but I believe it affects our bedtime routine negatively. Glad you want to change things, would be nice to hear one day, if you experienced any benefits.

@amiablePeace77 I actually try to let go of everything positive or negative. This seems to work for me. The emptiness just leads me into sleep.

I do. I always give thanks every night for another day of life for me and my family no matter how hard the day was. And in the morning I pray for grateful for another nights sleep and being able to wake up and having my family with me another day

Hi Ami, thank you for this check in. As much as I have tried to focus on mindfulness lately, I haven't given much thought to applying it to my sleep time. I'm glad that you brought this idea up because I think that practicing mindfulness at bedtime will be helpful to me. Most times I fall asleep very quickly but if I do not, it is because I am dwelling on stressful thoughts. And often times when I fall asleep with stress, I sleep poorly throughout the night- waking up periodically or having bad dreams. But even when I am not stressed, I am not particularly mindful when I lay down to sleep.

I'm going to practice focusing on gratitude and positive thinking at bed time this week- thank you smiley

I think of how good it will feel when I finally find my life partner to join me in bed every night! No loneliness, a warm human body next to mine and I smile :) at the thought!
