@ASilentObserver

Thank you Obs! Sometimes the best topics are the chances to open the door and take the floor. :D

This is a great CommUNITY we're part of. I think there is a great amount of mutual support in the Mindfulness community - each person in their own process, sharing thoughts, and moving forward by sharing, caring, and being there. We are helping each other along the way - with a a diversity of points of views and personal experiences that we are comfortable to share with each other. Much thanks is due to our leaders for giving us forum post to rally around and learn from and with.

Random Mindfulness Community thought.... I've looked around, maybe I just haven't found it.

Can we create a Mindfulness glossary for our community?

For people like myself - sometimes there are terms that lose me and possibly others - that are used by more experienced practioners. There have been references like CBT and such -- and sure, I can head out to google it but it would be nice to have something within the community to turn to. If the glossary was set up like a forum - with each definition having it's own thread - we could then put relevant exercises and videos under that post to help further understanding.

Sorry if this already exist and I just haven't found it - a tool as such would be so helpful to so many people imo.

Hi there Diplomatic good to see you todaysmileyI love how you made UNITY big-as yes this community is unityheartYes I believe this community is all that you mentioned. That is why I love what each and everyone of you contribute and support here. As well as a wonderful team that supports in discussions and forum stuff. Can I ask what you mean by "Mindfulness Glossary?

Mindfulness has this resource library that our wonderful @soulsings puts together: https://www.7cups.com/forum/MindfulnessSupportCommunity_106/ResourceLibrary_1062/

I suggest on a slow day for you that you "get lost" and wonder around all the topic areas this community has put together. We have lots of information just waiting for you to discoversmiley

@RumpleSteeleSkin

I've found the video library.... it's a slow peruse. Thanks to Souls for putting that together.

Glossary ... just like a dictionary.... create a post (a thread), provide a definition, maybe some references and/or tools. I can be a little analytical (okay, maybe a lot) and building a working vocabulary and understanding is helpful to me. We often forget that not everyone is exposed to our experiences and the specific terminology we might know and have a working knowledge of and we just toss it out there thinking "hey, everybody knows this stuff". Well, no, not everyone does -- and having an internal point of reference (glossary) might be helpful.

So for example, one acronym I see toss around a lot is CBT. No idea what it was when it was bantered around a lot in a post a few months back, I was totally clueless. I'm still working on understanding and getting it to click so a thread like this might help me and others:

Master thread: A Mindfulness Glossary of Terms

Body: This glossary will hopefully help you understand words/terminology that frequently come up in the discussions of mindfulness and mental health. Each term will have its own thread and some helpful links and other information within in it. This collection will always be growing as we learn and experience new information and hope it will help you in your understanding of mindfulness and mental health.

Then in a new sub-thread:

Headline/Topic: Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

Body: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors. The goal of cognitive behavior therapy is to teach patients that while they cannot control every aspect of the world around them, they can take control of how they interpret and deal with things in their environment.

Then the sub-post could be:

What is Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy?
https://www.mindfulness.net.au/what-is-micbt.html

Another sub-post could be:

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
https://www.goodtherapy.org/learn-about-therapy/types/mindfulness-based-cognitive-therapy

Another Sub-post could be:
Thinking Error (worksheet)
https://www.therapistaid.com/therapy-worksheet/cbt-thinking-errors/cbt/none

Then the next headline topic entry in a new thread:

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)

Body: Rational emotive behavior therapy, also known as REBT, is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy developed by psychologist Albert Ellis. REBT is focused on helping clients change irrational beliefs. Ellis suggested that people mistakenly blame external events for unhappiness. He argued, however, that it is our interpretation of these events that truly lies at the heart of our psychological distress. To explain this process, Ellis developed what he referred to as the ABC Model:

A – Activating Event: Something happens in the environment around you.

B – Beliefs: You hold a belief about the event or situation.

C – Consequence: You have an emotional response to your belief.

Sub-topic: Activating Events

Sub-topic: Beliefs

Sub-topic: Consequences

Sub-topic: ......

Am I making sense?

But I will look into what are boundaries are on this as well can you maybe make a google doc and share all this and pm it to me? That way Ill have it all and if I can add things I certainly willsmiley

I guess my question would be "How do you find a balance between self care and helping others." I find that for me to have the peace of mind and ability to hold mentally stable, I tend to shut others out. It is like I have developed this comfort bubble within myself and for myself and everyone else feels like an intruder. I don't want to deal the negativity or trauma that others go through because I, myself, can't handle it.

I used to be the opposite. I cared about everyone else but neglected my own needs. Now, I have become someone that seems more self centered because I have had to set so many boundaries to keep myself from being triggered. (I am a trauma survivor) People trigger me easily in normal everyday conversation.

I am able to hold more stable doing things the way I do now, but I feel now like my life is lacking, as if there is a deep void. Helping others has always been such a big part of who I am and how my heart beats that it is causing a depression to not be able to do the things that I used to.

@TeenyTinyAppy Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us Appy. Appreciate it.

I hear you and understand it is not easy to balance between two. It always seems unbalanced.

I try to set and maintain a boundary between self care and helping others. It is not easy but not to get overwhelmed while helping others, I try to take self-care breaks. Even if it is just for 5 minutes.

While noticing others needs and helping them, you need to acknowledge your needs as well.

Doesn't being mindful take us OUT of the experience of living/breathing/being IN the moment? Whenever we take a step back, analyze, or remove ourselves from what we're doing to take a look at it, (check if we're being mindful, observe instead of participate) we remove ourselves from the situation/action/event/thing/feeling, rather than just be part of it, enjoy it, continue.

I love to be in a sitaution, enjoying myself, and briefly pause to realize (and sometimes say/share) wow! Look at our lives! Look what we're doing! Get a smile, a warm feeling, then go back to the experience.

Doesn't this removal process (of being mindful) prevent us from actually staying focused, stay in the moment, enjoy it deeper, live it more fully? Seems opposite the point of mindfulness. Why interrupt what you're doing and return to it, rather than let it flow?
