Mindfulness weekly idea August 22-29

Dear lovely 35plus community
Happy Thursday! How are you all doing?
I myself have been dealing with quite a few difficult emotions lately. Anger, guilt, shame, disappointment… you name it! I have to say that mindfulness has helped me a lot to process them. So I thought I could do a post about this :)
How do we mindfully deal with difficult emotions?
Once you have recognised that a difficult emotion is there, the first step is to turn towards this emotion with curiosity. Identify and label what it is. Say to yourself: This is anger for instance, or This is anxiety.
Acknowledge and accept its presence. Dont deny it. Every emotion comes for a reason and with a message. Anger, for instance, tells us that there is an unmet need.
Inquire and investigate your thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. Observe what is going on in your mind, heart and body. What thoughts are running through your head? What triggered you? What feelings are you mindful of? What areas of your body feel tense, or burning, or warm, or relaxed? Where is the core of the emotion located exactly, and what effect does a sustained mindful awareness have on the physical aspect of your experience?
Do not identify yourself with what you are feeling. Emotion has the word motion in it. Emotions are always moving, fluxing and changing. Try to distance yourself and create a space between you and what you are feeling. The emotion is more likely to do what all emotions do quite naturally, which is to keep moving. Anger, guilt, sadness… they all come and go, but you dont. Youre always here.
Have you ever tried such an approach to your emotions? How was the experience? What do you find more challenging?
As always, I would love to read your feedback!
Cheers from France
Valeria

I try to write about them and face them.
I also sing and belt out feelings
@Rebekahwriter13
That's great Rebekah! When we write them down, feelings and emotions become clearer and hidden thoughts and feelings come to the surface, allowing our mind to calm down and reorganise. I remember you are also writing a book! How is it going?
Singing is also very powerful, as it engages our emotions as fuel for a physical activity!
@admaiorasemper
Yes I need to write more emotions down. Lol
I finished it but I'm still tweaking the ending, I never like ending things.
I love music
@Rebekahwriter13
Same. It def helps to right down your feelings and emotions. For me it helps me to calm down and release the negative thoughts.
@Itsallaboutme313 I need to write them down.
@admaiorasemper
Very well written . It is extremely important to understand that we are not our thoughts . Instead we are the observer / witness of the thoughts our mind is producing .
@calmsoulmeet
I remember when my therapist wrote exactly that, you are not your thoughts nor your emotions. It was such a revelation for me
@admaiorasemper this is great! It is so true that acknowledging emotions helps. It kind of gives you an opportunity to control them
@SoulfullyAButterfly
Exactly! The fact that an emotion or thought is there, doesn't mean that we have to act on it. We are in control of our actions, and this is a lot
@admaiorasemper
Bonjour!~ (France "as well as England"... were two of the only major places that I ever wanted to visit in my lifetime as a younger adult)... I used to do very well speaking and learning French... but these days I'm fortunate to remember "Bonjour"! lol...
I find that writing about my feelings (journaling) has really helped me in the past with letting go of any negative emotions...(sadness, anger etc..)...Maybe not completely, but it certainly helped once I was able to sit down and do it....
I even find that If I am angered by someone, that "texting" (or even writing a letter to them) helps me to put things into better perspective and be more "rational" when speaking with them, so that I don't say something as "negative" if I were speak to them directly.
Emotions can be a powerful thing if we let them or don't take charge of them for sure~
Bonjour @PoliteOcean :)
I totally agree, journaling does help a lot with emotions. I've started doing it only recently after maybe, I don't know, twenty years? And I think I'm gonna keep doing it for a long long time!
Thank you for sharing the texting/letter tip! It does sound helpful. In fact, I may actually even try it right now, as I have some unresolved anger towards someone
Have a great day, bientôt :)
I label like this..
"This anger is something I can control. I will control this anger."
takes a bit, but usually I get there.
@DaveMcGrath
Hi Dave! This is really interesting :) May I ask you what you mean by 'control'?
@admaiorasemper
There are things like my feelings and reactions that are for me to control. What other people say and do, out of my control. I can control how I feel, often with a great deal of effort. I can't control what others say, that's their business.
@DaveMcGrath
I totally agree! I find quite empowering when we remind ourselves that there are things out of our control, for which we are not responsible.
