Physical challenges to exercise

Hi everyone, I hope you are doing well. Too often the world of exercise and motivation takes into account the mental challenges we face when it comes to exercise. While those are valid, there is little focus on acknowledging the physical limitations/challenges a person faces when dealing with health concerns.

Some level of movement is needed for everyone to improve their day-to-day functions. But it can differ greatly based on current health. For example, a person with a broken foot can’t go on walks, and someone with chronic pain may not be able to get much done when in a flare-up. All these realities exist. The experiences of people in pain, dealing with health issues are just as valid.

What physical challenge do you face that is often neglected when exercise is preached/promoted?

@Hope

I think this is a very good point. Sometimes the struggle to exercise is more than just a mental struggle. Following an injury, not only might exercise have to stop to allow healing, but then it is harder to get started again, with the loss of fitness and strength.

I find pilates really good exercise when I'm limited physically. Normally the exercises on a session are varied and I just skip the ones that are problematic. But when I have an injury, or my condition is bothering me, I'm always surprised by how much I can do. Sometimes I think I'll just meditate for the session, believing that that is all I will be able to do. And then I find myself doing more than half.

@Hope. I have an illness which gives me exercise and activity intolerance. I am not able to exercise like the average person would , it makes me Ill. I can’t do a 20 minute walk without getting sick/crashing. So I break it up into 3 minute walks around my house a few times a day with rest periods in between.

I was in a vehicle wreck when a DWI driver crossed the center line. It totaled my truck and her and another person's car. I have had lower back pain intermittently since. Fortunately I have found some exercises that help decompress the lower spine and relieve pain. In the mean time I have good and bad days regarding exercise and work.

I habe friends who don't seem to undemanding I am still figuring it all out. And that some days just getting up and doing my back pain "ritual" is my exercise for that day.

Fortunately over rime the worst comes less often. It however makes if hard to be committed to a schedule at times. It probably does not register because some days I can hike or kayak or do gardening work with few issues.
