Hi everyone! I hope you are well. Some people have always been physically active while others had a wake-up call that forced them to change their ways. Regardless of what your reason is, we would like to know what was the changing point in your life where you started to really prioritize exercise.

If you were always active - What helped you make exercise a habit?

If you got active at some point - What was the turning point?

I am hoping your answers can help motivate us all and possibly avoid some of the same mistakes you may have made (I know I made plenty in life).

@Hope

Regarding your questions:

What was the changing point in your life where you started to really prioritize exercise?

  • Recently, the changing point was when I realized physical inactivity all day would cause big health problems for me in the long term
was starting to cause big problems
    in the short term too.

    I started noticing symptoms.
I started paying attention to recommendations
regarding inactivity, especially sitting long term.
I started looking carefully at my medical test results
and medical history trends (weight, blood tests, etc.).

If you were always active - What helped you make exercise a habit?

  • I was always active usually,
but the habit wasn't consistent forever
    and sometimes when situations changed
I stopped being active for a long time.

For example, sometimes I was active
    every day after lunch time.

Then later sometimes I was only active on weekends.

Sometimes when the weather got cold
I would stop being active because
    I usually was active outdoors.

If you got active at some point - What was the turning point?

  • I recently got active due to Covid
and the changes in my habits
and being indoors and I stopped going out.

So I decided to design healthy habits of
    doing fun exercise indoors.

I designed them to be so simple
    I can do them regularly
at no cost or extra effort (no driving, etc.).

The biggest turning point was when I read
Tiny Habits and Atomic Habits and Mini Habits
and also I signed up for Tiny Habits free coaching
for 1 week (which one can repeat free later too).

    It really helped me understand
    how to do behavior design
    using the books above.

The secret is not motivation or willpower.

The secret is designing a tiny or mini habit
    that takes almost no motivation
and is a habit you decided you really want to do
    for a very important reason.

Then you can get the habit growing
and because it's so easy, it will keep growing
and stick (as long as you believe it's important).

The secret also is changing your environment
to make it very easy to do the desired things
and make it difficult to do the undesired things.

Environment change is probably the easiest way
    to help change behavior fast.

I've always been active but my mom and I lifted weights for years, did exercise videos. I grew up with it. I e really slacked off lately. Today I did 5 push ups, 10 sit ups and walked 5230 steps. It's not much but it's a start.

You can do anything you want to do if you want to do it enough. It just takes planning, action, discipline and consistency. Annnnd, all of anything starts with making the first move - the most difficult one if you ask me 😯

Start with achievable goals that aren’t too overwhelming.
