What motivates you to exercise?

Hi All! Building on the topic of exercise. It is not always easy to squeeze in the time for it especially on the days you just don’t feel like it. However, most who are active consistently tend to have some deep-rooted reasons that help them stay on track.

For example, I find that exercise keeps me in a good mood and I only do what I don’t hate doing.

What is your motivation to exercise?

So many things! Here are some but not all

  1. look better of course - get closer to the body I want and feel comfortable and confident in the clothes I’ve always wanted to wear.
  2. feel better - I’ve got a little more energy and motivation since I’ve started exercising regularly. At first it was a chore but now it’s become cathartic and I really good feel my mood and energy levels improve after a gym session.
  3. get stronger - not too much real life applications where it’s useful but being able to get the groceries by myself, replace the water cooler jug, carry the occasional large packages at home or work by myself is great. I prefer not depending on anyone for daily tasks where possible and helping others with these kinda things where possible.
  4. biggest reason - for longevity. We live in a time now where 1. It seems like people don’t invest in their health until it’s too late and 2. We have longer life expectancies but low quality of life after a certain point. I don’t want to let my body deteriorate from lack of care. And if I have to wait until I’m 65 (best case) to retire and enjoy my life, I wanna have a working body. Also I want to be active enough at that age and through my adult life to keep up with my kids, grandchildren, etc. And don’t want to become a burden to anyone because I need assistance for daily activities. I know this point is inevitable and sometimes out of peoples control but if I can push it off as much as possible why not try?

@Hope

My deep-rooted reasons for moving often and intensely are:

  • I read all about the many harmful physical and mental problems caused by a sedentary lifestyle of sitting mostly all day and not getting much intense physical activity

  • I know first-hand how it leads to poor sleep, poor digestion, weight gain, type-2 diabetes, poor lymphatic flow and build-up of toxins in the body, muscle atrophy, nerve damage in legs and feet, stress, depression, anxiety, low self-confidence, low self-esteem, low motivation, low self-control, low willpower

  • I decided I am not the kind of person who wants to let that all happen to me just due to sitting too long

  • I know how good if feels to just get up and move

  • I know how easy it is to move

@Hope, firstly , and I can't start off without mentioning this - Thank you for posting such a thoughtful thread . Its very self-introspective . And also remembering why one started the journey in the first place is motivating!

Initially when I started working out it was solely to get into a better shape, look good... however very recently I noticed that my mindset has changed. I do not do it for looking good anymore. Its just to remain strong and maintain the flexibility of my body

Like many other have said it began as wanting to look and feel healthy but as I've gotten older and have a family I am more health conscious so that I can be there for my family as my best self.
