High 5 Badge is earned .. iam so happy
I have major reconstructive surgery of my left foot and ankle scheduled this coming Friday, and my anxiety is through the roof! I will be in rehab 6-8 weeks and will have to learn to walk with what will essentially be a "wooden" foot. Suggestions for getting through these next few days?
@DjChrys
Best of luck. You are so strong
@DjChrys This sounds nerve wrecking and stressful. I hope all goes well.
@DjChrys
Believe in yourself and strive forward with the best of your abilities , don't give up nor lose hope . You will get through it with ease.
@DjChrys Hi Chrys. You have my sympathy for what will be a challenging procedure. I know because I had my left knee reconstructed and sadly, as you might discover yourself, it has never been the same. Rehab was painful and challenging as you will soon learn once the swelling has gone down some. However, despite the pain it will cause, the rehab is the most important part of your recovery. Please sleep well prior to and after your sessions so your body can heal and learn new and efficient ways of moving. Though there will be much anger as to the strange limits placed on your body, consider it an opportunity to be grateful for the things your body stil can do. It is a pretty miraculous thing when you think about it. Remember to empower the rest of your body with low impact exercise. For me, yoga was and still is one of my favorite activities. All that being said, my injury has brought a new awareness to my movement and I have better balance than I would have ever had without experiencing the trauma of the injury and surgery. This is a time to be gentle and compassionate with your new body. Though may not be the same, it might lead to some powerful discoveries, not the least of which is greater empathy towards those around you. Wishing you a steady and successful recovery. Of course, please do be careful with the pain meds that are prescribed as they can be quite addictive. Consider marijuana if that is something you are open to. It will reduce swelling and alleviate the pain in the afflicted areas. To good health. Kyle
@DjChrys Lol!
@DjChrys . I hope your surgery went well. Take it one day at a time. Take the smallest of actions you need in order to begin and work your way up.
@DjChrys
Here are some skills I recently learnt for anxiety...
1. put ice on your face for 30 seconds; it really works
2. tense each muscle group in your body and hold for 5 seconds and release, start with your face, neck, shoulders, hands, arms etc. (progressive muscle relaxation pmr)
3. Paced breathing - there are videos on you tube to slow your breathing down to about 6 secs per minute do this for 10 minutes search '6 breaths per minute', try doing this twice a day for 10 minutes each time. i do it in the car too.
4. check the facts - what is worrisome or outcome for you? list possible outcomes as possible (4) describe what is the worst you can expect, then check your emotions with a value of 0-10 whether they really fit the facts.
5. Use thought diffusion - in your mind distance your self by saying "The thought that I am having is that I am scared about surgery" it is just a thought not a fact.
6. Use distract skills -what activity can you do to distract your thinking - watching a movie/ etc, what can you do for someone else? how will you be better off after surgery? What can you doto generate a different emotion inside? pracitice putting the fear on the shelf temporarily. Try ABC skills / counting backwards.
7. create a self soothe kit for yourself, that appeals to all your senses, choose 5 objects that you can smell touch hold, see and taste to distract you. E.g., aromatherapy oils etc., a bath with magnesium and lavender oil, drink chamomile or calming teas, ginger etc.
8. listen to music that makes you feel good.

@DjChrys
Remind yourself that feeling anxiety is normal for major surgeries. Talk to someone about your fears. Follow your path do some relaxation exercizes and most importantly remember that you are adaptable and capable of doing hard things.
Allow yourself to just take these days to get some well deserved R&R... you never know when the time will come :)

Woo hoo!! I passed my verified listener test!! :D Feeling so proud right now!!!
I think I'm on step 7. This last chat went remarkably well, and I enjoyed reaching out to them.
I also had another chat going on that didn't go so well. That chatter accused me of disrespecting them simply because I wouldn't directly answer a question they tried to pigeon hole me into, and I asked what made them feel that way, and they accused me of that again and left the chat. I don't feel bothered by that, only that I feel saddened that they are carrying such a chip on their shoulder. Maybe others have judged them in the past, and I wasn't doing that, but they took it out on me.
Got my sleeping well badge, I will commitment to helping people with the best of my abilities.
