November 16 to November 22: Forgiveness Week! #IForgiveYou Campaign

User Profile: Laura
Laura November 17th, 2015

This week, the theme is #forgiveness!

Forgiveness can be a challenging concept, but it is an important one. This week, we'd like to encourage you to discuss what forgiveness means to you.

Lead a pop-up discussion or a planned discussion, write about your experiences or questions with forgiveness in the forums, discuss the concept with your members and find ways to better understand how forgiveness can be a regular part of your life. If you are a support room leader, you focus on forgiveness in your support sessions.

There are 2 types of forgiveness we can focus on:

1) Forgiveness we give to others

2) Forgiveness we give to ourselves (I made a short video on self-forgiveness a while back, take a look here).

Challenge: We challenge you to forgive someone this week. Whether it be yourself for a past action, or another person, this is the week to let it go & get past it. Our community is here to support you in this challenging endeavor.

I've realised that only way I could get rid of a painful past is understanding that I must forgive myself for the things I have done. Once you do that, you stop thinking what you could have done differently if you could go back to the past. When you accept that you are a human and you made and you will keep making mistakes you set yourself free and move forward with your life. I'm not saying that you should always use 'I'm a human' excuse to each mistake that you make, no. Sometimes you will have to take responsabilities of your decisions too. Though many times it's easier to forget than forgive especially when others have hurt you.

@Johnny20 WELL SAID! We all know we can't change the past. Forgiving ourselves first is a healthy way to act and it leads to easier forgiveness of others. :)

For me, forgiving myself means knowing that I have made mistakes in the past and that it won't help to punish myself over and over for those mistakes. Nothing can change what happened in the past. However, I can learn from those mistakes, make amends where I can, and try not to repeat them again in the future. It means knowing that I will continue to make mistakes, but accepting that I am doing the best I can on any given day.

Forgiveness helps you to find peace, it is more something that helps you to move on than something you do for the other person. It is leaving behind something painful for you own benefit, letting go that heavy burden and trying to find peace. smiley

The first time I forgave someone was a few years back and it was an incredibly comforting feeling. I felt almost immediate peace in myself, the person was no longer on my mind and I felt I could truly move on from the pain they caused.
Sometimes it's very difficult to forgive and I don't expect anyone to forgive everyone because some things are literally un-forgiveable but most things can be forgiven. angel

Forgiving is one of the most difficult things to do. We usually think that most of the things that happen in our life are to be considered in terms of merits. "It is not worth it", "I don't deserve this", and so on. Forgiveness is one of the main issues connected to this kind of reasoning. Why to forgive someone who doesn't deserve it? That isn't worth it? What if I am not worth being forgiven?

Sometimes what we have to do is to adopt another point of you. At the end, it is us who decide for our own happiness and wellbeing, and if some thoughts are not allowing it... we can think something else!

Anger is more painful than forgiveness. Sadness is more painful than forgiveness. Loneliness is more painful than forgiveness.

There are cases in which forgiveness is not possible. Sometimes someone an leave us scars we have to cope with during our whole life. But even in that case, we can forgive ourselves. We can forgive ourselves for having forced ourselves to go on even if we were hurting. To not have understood what was going on.

Bad decisions and bad thoughts are normal. But they are not the only one we can have.

Forgiveness is our decision to shift from looking at our scars to find something positive and relieving to do. Is our shift from negative to positive thoughts, regarding ourselves and the others.

I forgive myself for not having always the strength to forgive. But I promise I'll do better.

I have realized that thinking about the past is not the best way to go. People need to get over the little anxieties they go through and think about the upcoming future. If someone has hurt you in a way, the only way to get over it is #forgiveness

Oh I like this Laura ! This is really good :) I loved your video too, well done for doing that :) I've come across this a lot in conversations on here and in real life... it's vital for our well being and happiness. But I often find that people have trouble forgiving because they think in some way that they are saying that what happened was actually OK, when it wasn't OK, it was really bad. In other words, the process of forgiving is often frustrated because people confuse it with legitimising.

I've been meaning to write a post about this for some time, so what better time than now ? Thanks for bringing the subject up, and I'd be grateful for any feedback about the post :)

I always thought forgiveness meant forgetting and that when you forgive someone, you restore that relationship. However, I realized forgiveness doesn't mean reconciliation, it's more for our peace of mind, to relieve ourselves of that weight we're carrying. It made healing an easier road for me.

I forgive God for sending me on a sad place like this earth. I forgive my parents for wasted their beautiful years of youth on a thankless guy like me. I forgive my teachers for, having raised a student who couldn't bring them any glory. I forgive my ex for letting me know what love is like. I forgive myself for abusing her when she told she will leave me for someone else. I forgive myself for having expectations from people in this selfish world. I forgive myself for becoming yet another cog of this selfish mechanism. I forgive myself for not making the lives of the needy any better. I forgive myself for committing the crime of getting my hopes high in this hopeless world. But I will keep on committing this crime and keep on getting hurt and keep on forgiving myself. I thank all those people I forgave to have committed this crime, for me.
