The Boy
So he went to the park to see if anyone would let him play fetch with their dog, but no-one was there! It was a gently sunny weekend, mid-afternoon, so this struck the boy as odd. He asked a nearby stranger, and was told the entire park would now be closed on that day and pointed to a nearby sign.
He decided to go to a friend's house, but found that their house had been sold. This was news to the boy. After the strange events of the day, he thought he would go home to report to his mum.
The boy asked why all these things were happening. Why it seemed he couldn't have a good day even though he felt like he had earned it.
The boy's mother knew all the answers.
She explained a regular boy had won a small fortune and it was his dream to buy out a store. It just so happened to be this boy's favourite store too.
She explained this same boy had conferred with the local council and convinced them to close the park one day a week.
She explained that this mysterious boy was actually the friend he had gone to see, and he had paid for his family to move closer to loved ones.
The boy asked why she let him go on such a fruitless adventure when she knew what he was likely to do. The store was his preferred reward for hard work; the park was a necessary stop on a good day as he loved dogs; and his friend was dear and lived close.
She told him it was his dear friend's wish, and gave him a note.
"Although I stole your day, you have still gained. Each disappointment made the next thing all the more exciting, and that anticipation is immortal. Your next good fortune will be all the sweeter. You learned good odd things can happen, and life is full of mystery. You came to see me live my dreams, and for that I know you are a little more happy. But it still feels like loss, doesn't it? Ask your mother, she knows."
Confused, the boy asked his mother what all this could possibly mean.
She explained the store that had been bought out now had the resources to expand, and new items would be stocked.
She explained that an empty park, even if only for a day each week, gave the local wildlife a chance to recover and helped restore balance. That on the days it would be open, it would be more lively.
She explained that although his dear friend loved him, moving was necessary: there was a greater, shared love at play that couldn't be ignored.
The boy complained that his friend had abandoned him and he would never find someone like that again.
The mother hugged the boy and wept. She told him she knew it felt like loss, but it was a valuable lesson in love. That his friend showed him the value of following the heart, and each love from now on would be more fulfilling.
"Sometimes we find the most when we have lost the greatest. When your father passed, I was crushed. But I live in his spirit, and although I am alone now, I see you clearly. I see him in you. And my days have never been more joyous. You are the light of my life."
@cyanessence the ending was really sad🙁 is that true? I guess in a way I do openly tell people I love them more than most, it always seems like I do to me🤔 but no-one could ever... I don't know😕
I see the lessons that boy learnt and the meaning behind the story 💖 but it was harsh lessons to learn, but I guess life is one big harsh lesson🤔🤔 this story is alot of thinking when you just woke up😂 but thank you it is a good story 💖
@Tinywhisper11
It is just imagination, sorry if it was a bit heavy upon first waking! I appreciate you took the time to read it and comment on it.
I love you tiny! Platonically of course. I don't say those words enough in my life and I've come to regret that.
Life does feel like one big lesson sometimes.
Remind me to read this when I have more time <3
Awww, this story is so sweet <3
@cyanessence
Thank you, that was such a beautiful read and it spoke to me of flexibility, not trying to control things and living in the present moment and out of the darkest days, the sun will still shine. This boy had expectations, routine, familiarity, he was confused, hurt, put out when it all didn't go as planned, we can so often be derailed in life, and we don't know where to turn to next but it's in these hidden moments our greatest strength is revealed and we learn life also has u turns 💜🥰
@Amanda84
Thank you for the honest and kind reflection!
Life is unpredictable. It can be hard to see how things connect sometimes, and there are certainly occasionally u turns.
I have been this boy at times, attached to what is, confused and hurt when it disappears. But I feel more now, know that things are fleeting, and can appreciate whatever may come.
@cyanessence for some familiarity breeds contempt but for others it brings security. It's about navigating the grey middle ground of the two 💜🥰
@Amanda84
Opening my eyes yet again. Familiarity isn't inherently bad, but I'm not sure one should radically detach from everything either.
If the familiar brings one comfort, I am happy. If it is stable, I am even happier!
It is about navigation isn't it? There is a lot of grey.
@cyanessence Its about negotiating a space that inherently celebrates who you are and allows you to feel that 💜
There's a lot of brightness in this. I think my thoughts are all over the place, but I think this is the kind of short story that really reaches people. I like what you're doing 😁
@Torean
Thanks! I'm glad you can see the brightness. There is definitely sadness, but I think it captures a moment of healing.
Absolutely. Almost like the learning how to heal aspect.
Please write more stories <3
@jesusredeemedme2425
I will definitely write more! Thank you for your encouragement!
Make sure you post it cause I wanna read it hehe
@jesusredeemedme2425 I second this
@cyanessence you have an ease with words. The way you see life is so rich and deep and layered. Please continue this path - creative writing is your thing! ♥️
Agreed!
@Creamyyy
Thanks! That really means a lot. I never quite feel alive unless I'm writing. It is nourishing. That people appreciate it is a warmth like I've never felt.
I feel similarly about you! Hence my interest in you. I think I've said it multiple times now but I'll say it again: you're an excellent writer. I learn a lot from you.
@cyanessence What a tender, quietly profound story. It captures the ache of growing up — how loss, change, and love often arrive hand in hand. The mother’s wisdom, the boy’s confusion and, that bittersweet note reflect something deeply universal.... that even the sweetest things in life are fleeting but their absence often shapes us just as meaningfully as their presence. Sometimes what feels like loss is actually life gently teaching us how to hold joy with open hands — and how to keep moving forward with a heart big enough to let it go. Thank you for this.
You have got a gift, Cyanessence. Please, keep writing<3
