Ugly

It's easy to fall in love with beauty. It's striking. But it feels so special to see the beauty in ugliness.

I am in love with the broken and torn. Because when the world beats you down, the only things you have left to cling to are honesty and hope. The ugly are the heartbeat of my soul.

Most people look for symmetry, brightness, perfection. But I like living truth, the ones who bear all the weight of expectation and judgement in a world wishing for more.

Scars don't lie. When there is nothing left to mask, the depths come to the surface.

To survive in spite of collapse is a reminder that ruin still breathes.

Ugliness forces one past surface-level beauty into something raw, undeniable.

Ugliness is not the absence of beauty, it is beauty without disguise.

The lost who walk in darkness carry a kind of radiance no daylight can teach. Their tears carve valleys where light pools, quiet and hidden. To see them is to witness a hymn the world doesn’t sing aloud: the stubborn grace of those still moving, though broken, though unseen.

In them, the night itself learns how to shine.

Nothing so full of wonder and hope and kindness could ever be ugly. You are perfect. No long explanations necessary.

The way you have built yourself up to be a strength for others almost doesn't make sense to me. I will never claim to understand all that you've gone through, but I know shards, I know hard doesn't describe it. I know even evil doesn't really carry the proper weight.

It makes every smile, every joke, every tiny hug, a giant miracle. When I think of you, I get a little confused, because you seem impossible. You are so full of good... I am in awe.

🥺

This moved me, it brought me to a place of solitude and resistance!

Society wants us all to conform, look perfect, be perfect, follow rules, fit in, get married, have kids, be happy, follow the daily grind!

When we don't fit that mould, it's like we no longer fit a certain criteria!

It's those that struggle, that faced trauma, that looked conformity in the face and said, no thanks , that really stand out!

They are the ugly ones, because they are the ones that carve a very different path, and they are the ones, although often invisible, they don't give in and they've something far more interesting to say!

Your thoughts on aesthetics are very sweet and align with things I think many can appreciate and resonate with. I am not sure that ugly is truly even the right in so many cases. I prefer to think in terms of imprecisions and evolutions. There is a beauty in the uniqueness of an item that one might consider flawed if perfection was all that is strived for. Likewise, I can appreciate the aesthetics of entropy. There is something very tactile about things like lichen or fungus or rust, and a host of many other agents of physical change, that is alluring and has a beauty quite of its own.

Symmetry can indeed be pleasing, but it can also be predictable or clinical. Chaos of form is so striking because it breaks from that mould.

I find it curious how you highlight the equation of scars and survival as being marks of ugliness. A societal bias towards perfection certainly seems sometimes to back up that notion. And it was also interesting how you see such things as being an unfiltered beauty of their own. It is a very lovely notion.

For me though I can find very little in the world which I think deserves the moniker of ugly. Ugliness for me is reserved solely for vile acts and cruelty. As such, I cannot think of any physical thing as being ugly. Ugliness in that sense is a state that is felt only by exposure to such behaviours. Sort of like the metaphysical emotional equivalent to the revulsion one might feel towards a particularly potent pungent pong.

You are right. I don't tend to label things as ugly, as it feels like an insult. That bird with the missing eye and misshapen form isn't ugly, it's imperfect, imprecise. And if that bird cannot fly, if it walks, it carries a strength that will take it further than flight ever could.

I once knew a blind cat. She wasn't born like that. It was an accident, caused by a vet. It's not the vets fault. They, too, are imprecise, yet choose to act, even if mistakes happen.

I often wonder how she feels, this cat that could once see, but now cannot, and does not know why. But she radiated happiness and hope, and loved the outdoors. She would explore in her own way, taking slow and cautious steps, always making progress.

I like to think she found wonder. That in her newfound imperfection, she saw light. The world is suddenly transformed, and although it is dark now, she sees a point. She chooses to live, knowing she knows less than before.

Some of us label ourselves as ugly, but feel shame. That is a tragedy. We all have to have different faces, different lives. If there were no "ugly" people, beauty would be invisible.

This. Nothing is more beautiful than resilience and ties between those of us who have more realness to offer
