I googled "best kids and YA books", and came up with "Salt to the Sea", a book I'd forgotten about reading <3 I think I got it from one of those "back of the cereal box, free book" offers hehe!

While the Titanic and Lusitania are both well-documented disasters, the single greatest tragedy in maritime history is the little-known January 30, 1945 sinking in the Baltic Sea by a Soviet submarine of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German cruise liner that was supposed to ferry wartime personnel and refugees to safety from the advancing Red Army. The ship was overcrowded with more than 10,500 passengers — the intended capacity was approximately 1,800 — and more than 9,000 people, including 5,000 children, lost their lives.
Sepetys (writer of 'Between Shades of Gray') crafts four fictionalized but historically accurate voices to convey the real-life tragedy. There's a book I simply cannot remember from childhood. The details are so fuzzy I don't even have anything I could google. A pretty story about travelling...
I looked up a list of popular kids and YA books, but it just reminded me of The Magic Faraway Tree. Here's a brief summary from enidblytonsociety.co.uk

The house on Mango street!
According to Wiki: The House on Mango Street is a 1984 novel by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros. Structured as a series of vignettes, it tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a 12-year-old Chicana girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. Based in part on Cisneros's own experience, the novel follows Esperanza over the span of one year in her life, as she enters adolescence and begins to face the realities of life as a young woman in a poor and patriarchal community.

i'm not much of a reader, never have been unfortunately 😅 but i do remember the first book i got as a gift. it was from my cousin, "the little prince" i loved everything about it! mostly the drawings<3
