Writing advice?
Hey all!
Ive been writing a book and Im only 3 chapters in, but I feel like the character's maturity is progressing too fast? Like the main character arc is going faster than planned, im practically a quarter way through and I want the book to be atleast more than 20 chapters in total.
I've been working on this for literally years, so I'm pretty hesitant about changing anything in the three chapters Ive gotten done, but at the same time, I want to do this right. And that includes pacing.
Any tips for how I can fix this? Im not expecting miracles but even a little support would be appreciated xD

It might help to sit back and reflect and brainstorm.
Get a change of scenery to give your mind time to just be inspired

my advice would be to put down and write every milestone you think your characters are goign to hit like establih the character arc first and the conflicts and what is going to make them grow and then expand. what mean is your characters aren't goingto go from pont A to B suddenly. you'll know the destination an then you'll add more stops in between, if that makes sense?

I had a similar problem with something I was writing once. I realised I was letting the character learn every lesson almost immediately after something happened 😅 What helped me was writing down the main changes I wanted them to go through, then adding smaller setbacks between each one. Sometimes letting them make the same mistake twice makes the growth feel much more natural too.

Glad to hear Im not the only one messing things up this way xD its so silly, but I really cant make sense of pacing. I appreciate the advice and will try it, thank you lots!

In real life at least, maturity isn't a linear path. Your character may seem to be progressing too fast. You could rewrite part of it and make the character react poorly, or they could have an experience later into the book that makes them make the wrong decision. You can do this!
