Hello all, and welcome to a discussion on the connection between motivation and relationships. In our journey through life, we often find these two elements intertwined, shaping our interactions, aspirations, and personal growth. So let’s dive deeper on this topic!

1. Motivation as the Basis of Relationships:

In relationships, motivation plays a crucial role in laying the foundation for meaningful connections. Whether it's the drive to build a fulfilling partnership, the ambition to support loved ones, or the desire to contribute positively to our social circles, our motivations can significantly influence the quality and dynamics of our relationships.

2. Relationships as Catalysts for Motivation:

Also, relationships can serve as powerful sources of motivation, fueling our drive to achieve personal and shared goals alike. Whether it's the encouragement from a supportive partner, the inspiration drawn from close friendships, or the collective pursuit of common objectives within professional networks, our connections with others can ignite a spark within us to strive for growth and success.

Question prompts:

1. How do you navigate differences in motivation levels within your relationships? Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your goals diverged from those of your partner or friends?

2. How do you sustain motivation within relationships during difficult periods? What role do support, communication, and mutual encouragement play in overcoming obstacles and staying motivated together?

Feel free to contribute your thoughts and engage with the questions posed above. Together, let's explore the small differences of this captivating topic and learn from each other's experiences.

How do you navigate differences in motivation levels within your relationships?    People may have motivation at different levels or intensity.... when my partner wanted to do things  they expect me to drop everything and be on board..... some people try this for awhile then lose motivation not because what ever you are doing is not your plan  ...but feel manipulated into doing it.    togetherness for somethings is not a good thing it can damage the relationship.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your goals diverged from those of your partner or friends?      depends on the partner or friend .........but i have had some IMO try to derail my motivation ... example i say "i am getting up early to go to gym or i am taking long walk or hike"  .....  In both cases they sometimes say "wait a bit i will go with you" then procrastinate to the point of i am now frustrated and no longer want to go.....  Another example: shopping they run to items they want to buy but if i need to look through things / try things on.......they act as if this is asking too much to wait ........ so now i actively avoid letting them know I need to look for something or want to shop as their motivation is just about them.

It has caused stress since partner health reasons they cannot exercise very much so they procrastinate and frankly I think they would like me to not shape up either... as it would highlight their weight issue.

I think in the subject of motivation..............many think friends and family are all cheerleaders... but often IMO there are opposite .........sometimes that can get people to procrastinate or give up on big motivation.

Thank you for saying what you did about togetherness. It was actually really helpful and exactly what I needed to hear rn. I just told my partner I want to live separately short term to be able to figure out who I am without others and what you said definitely goes hand in hand with why i feel like living on my own is something I need to do.

1. I feel like I constantly find myself in situations where my goals and motivations differ from my partner, family, and friends. How I navigate that… I start by talking. I share my goals and let the other person know that their goals are important to me too. Then there’s usually an argument, they don’t understand or like that I want something different because it makes things inconvenient for them, I try again to be heard and find a middle ground, they tell me I’m talking too long or put down my preferences, and I end up shutting down. I used to get pressured into doing what they wanted. Now I avoid doing things with them altogether. Lose-lose.

2. Currently I’m finding it difficult to sustain motivation. I used to try reading self-help books and attempt different methods of communication. I had hope that time and commitment would help. How many years of my life I have spent doing this. I’ve learned the bottom line is that people want what they want. They don’t want to compromise. They don’t want to take turns or meet in the middle. They value you based on what you can do for them. They might say they love you and want you to be happy, but they think they know what you need to be happy better than you do. I’d love to meet someone in real life who can prove me wrong.

I’m sorry for being so negative in my response. I wanted to try to think of something helpful or empowering, but I’m struggling big time with these things. I really appreciate having the opportunity to talk about it.

I like question 2. I think there is a trend to walk away from relationships if there is a difficult period. But I think many people want someone who sticks by them through the difficult bits. But there's so little info on how to do that.

I think the first thing has to be self care. I think the relationship with yourself has to be your most important relationship. So, if a relationship is going through a difficult patch, the first thing should be to check your relationship with yourself and make sure it is strong.

And then to try to remember the "humanness" of the other person. They are no more perfect than I am. They have off moments/days/weeks. Can I support them when the going gets a bit tough?

And to remember that friends don't intentionally hurt each other. So if I'm perceiving hurt, I should check first if it was really intended.

I'm not particularly good at these things, so these are things that I think would be helpful/things I'm aiming to do, rather than things I always do.
