Loss of respect is a relationship-killer, on either side. You must be able to maintain an attitude of respect for your partner and vice versa.
Never just settle for "I'm ok" or " I'm fine." For an answer. Really learn about each other, find common interests
Remember to listen to your "gut feeling".
This is more of a motto: always be honest.
Love yourself first. Be comfortable, and who you are, and you will have the life you want. The ones you invite in, who appreciate and respect that, will make things better. Love is tricky, though; we're often attracted to things (including people) that don't necessarily improve our lives.
I made so many mistakes by trying to 'make things work', and the cost in effort rarely paid off.
Be open and choices , and you will learn so much more about yourself.
Never hold grudges- they only harm you and no one else. The world moves on, and so should we.
Don't neglect yourself to make others happy. Comprise is good but it's also a give and take.
