Family Struggles

I'm having trouble with my stepson. His attitude and behavior have been very problematic lately, and he told my husband yesterday that he only acts like that towards us because he doesn't like being at our house. That breaks my heart. I also feel so guilty for making him so unhappy that it's almost unbearable. There's been some tension present from the beginning, but it just keeps getting worse and worse. I think my husband contributed to some of that by the way he has treated me in front of the kids and the way he speaks about me to and around them. He's trying to make up for that now, but I feel like it's too late. I wish he could understand how hard it is to parent somebody else's children. How I gave up so much for them and him and I still feel like an outsider in my own home. I don't feel like there's any equality between him and me in terms of responsibilities. I feel like I'm a babysitter and a maid and not a wife or stepmom.

@mmarsh

I think you have a good grasp on it.  Kids do not like being around tension or  argument situations that seem  like things will go badly.  why would a  child open up and get to know a step parent that may seem like might not last etc.  your husband may not get it but you need to communicate this is not working for  anyone.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It takes a lot of courage to be this honest about something so deeply painful.

You’ve been giving so much of yourself—your time, your care, your energy, and it’s heartbreaking when all of that still leaves you feeling unseen, unappreciated, and blamed. Isn't it?

What your stepson said must’ve hit hard, especially after everything you’ve tried to do out of love and commitment, I can understand.

And it’s so valid to feel overwhelmed, guilty, and also deeply tired. Parenting, especially step-parenting is one of the hardest roles to step into, and doing it without feeling like a true partner in your own home makes it that much heavier.

It’s okay to want to be more than a caretaker. You deserve to feel respected, supported, and valued for the role you play and the person you are. I'm really sorry you're feeling like an outsider where you should feel most safe.

Please be gentle with yourself tonight. You’re carrying a lot, and you’re not alone. 💛

@mmarsh Hey there! First of all I want to thank you for sharing this. It takes a lot of courage to acknowledge and even more to share it with others. But I appreciate you for taking this step.

I can't even imagine what you must have been through. It must have been painful for you to hear the hurtful words of your stepson even after putting so much effort to be a happy family.

Also I can understand it's frustrating to getting enough support from your husband , especially when you needed it the most. Although he is trying but that never compensate the emotional damage it already made.

There are so many emotions that you're dealing with all by yourself. It must be really overwhelming for you. And it's pretty valid to have mixed emotions.

It's completely understandable to feel like an outsider when your efforts are not appreciated. But I also want to appreciate you for managing everything with so much dignity and with so much strength. Your willingness to do good for others is Cleary visible.

It's never easy the way you have managed everything until now but it's worth priotirizing yourself over everyone else too. You deserve the love, support and respect for yourself. You shouldn't have to carry the weight of all these emotions alone. You deserve a smile too.

Please feel free to reach out if you ever want to talk about this or regarding anything else. And lastly take care of yourself and remember, that you matter more than anything else. 😊

@mmarsh,

your husband could try to make up for it by having a serious talk with his son. And making it clear you are his wife, that he loves you and that you deserve the same respect his son gives to him, and vice versa.
