Censored messages - where do they go?
When our messages are censored, who gets them? Why are we not informed of that upfront?
Does it happen for both 1-1s and group chat?
Why is that even being done?
When we are told are 1-1s are confidential I don't think it's fair for messages we intended for 1 person to go to someone else, or a group of other people. Isn't this against 7cups guidelines?
UPDATE - See Laura's message below.
@AffyAvo
Hi! Thanks for your questions. I'm not admin, but I will try to answer the best I can.
Maybe it just hadn't reached you, but Laura has written about this numerous times. There's a forum post somewhere about it. They need to get reviewed for inappropriate content. Most businesses have some sort of safety measures in place. That's how they can be sure of the safety of their users. I wrote this in another post yesterday, but chats are still confidential and always will be. That's the cornerstone of the site is safe, confidential chats for users. But without the safety part, it won't go so well, so they need that safety part to be in place.
@EvelyneRose I haven't seen an admin post about this where I can read it. At the very least, this should be openly disclosed ahead of time. I don't see the need for this though, listeners have the capability to block.
@EvelyneRose
To add here:
We strongly believe in confidentiality both in rooms and in one on one. However, there are safety measures that are to be kept and are necessary. If someone is censored the whole chat isn't displayed for admin to see it's only just that message. It's not breaking entire confidentiality especially if the censor is breaking a site guideline. The censors are not shared to the public and are handled discreetly and by leadership. So thus, you're still keeping your confidentiality.
@Jenna Messages can be quite long. I've been caught by the censor multiple times and it wasn't for breaking any rules. So those messages went to someone I didn't intend to share information with - I don't consider that information to remain confidential. I think admin needs to address this and also make anyone having a chat aware of this possibility.
Don't I at least deserve to know who is reading my messages that didn't go to where I intended?
@AffyAvo
It's possible you were censored because of the context of the way you use the word. Even if you were not using it in malicious ways that word is possibly used in that manner. Which would explain why you would have gotten censored. In the terms of confidentiality I guess there isn't going to be 100% because there's going to be someone who needs to review things when censorship does happen where the rules were broken or not. It's all for improving quality on this site and making sure that we are taking the safety precautions that are needed. At the same time you still do maintain your confidentiality from your stuff going public to the community. I can tell you that admin are the ones who take care of things.
@Jenna We allow members to seek out listeners based on specific things - a particular gender, maybe someone who has gone through a specific experience. This is done to allow members to feel safe. Then some of their messages might go to someone who doesn't meet the criteria that's a problem. I don't consider that keeping the chat confidential.
@AffyAvo
I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying if someone looks for someone with say experience on ADD, then only people who have experience with ADD should look at their censor?
@EvelyneRose The only people who should be able to look at their messages are the people that an individual has chosen to disclose to. So if someone only wants to take to someone who say has had a miscarriage, and they find a listener willing to take their chat why should their messages then go to admin?
@AffyAvo
The whole conversation doesn't go to admin only that specific censored message. If you're saying something you shouldn't it gets censored. No one knows what the topic is or what the whole conversation is fully disclosing.
@Jenna Those messages can contain multiple sentences though and I don't know of any technology that can accurately only filter what is inappropriate.
@AffyAvo
Yes if the censor word is in a full couple sentences then it does censor the entire message. The point is nothing malicious is done to those censored messages that need to be reviewed. Technically your confidentiality is still protected because no one is publicly displaying the messages, it's all handled professionally, and after it's reviewed it is disposed. That's all I have to say on this topic. I hope you have a nice day.
@Jenna How many people need to be something that one didn't intend for them to see before it's no longer confidential?
@AffyAvo
I don't understand your question, sorry.
@AffyAvo
I still don't fully understand what you're saying, but what @Jenna said is correct.
Right now - when a listener is censored a report is generated containing ONLY the text that was censored. The report is used to make a determination on the quality of the chat and the listener.
At present, when a member is censored, while a report is generated nobody is looking at these reports. They are not viewed and not used to take any action on a member. Note, not only censor reports are generated, block reports & profile flags as well.
There may be a point in the future when we need to circle back to this. What should we do with a censor report that indicates a member has been sexting or harassing a listener? But this time is not now. I will make sure to circle back to this if we do decide to revisit how member generated reports get managed. But for the time being they are collecting dust and nobody is looking at them.
