Internet Etiquette
Hi everyone! Is it just me, or is it super hot right now?! At least in the majority of Europe ☀️
As you may have guessed, yes -- it's time for another forum safety discussion! Today's topic... internet etiquette!
🤔 what is that?
Good question! Internet etiquette is essentially the way we behave online. It definitely includes being polite and having good manners, but it also includes being safe, and knowing how to be. It’s similar to having a set of guidelines for how we behave online.
- not giving personal information ❌
- being careful with what information we share 💬
- being hesitant to click on links 🖱️
- using unique passwords 🔢
- having anti-virus software (Malwarebytes or Microsoft Defender for desktop) 🛡️
- being mindful of what photos we share online 🖼️
- using usernames that are not affiliated with any other site 🌐
- not using ourselves as a profile picture 🥸
- not sharing personal information ❌
- being respectful to all other users 🗣️
What can you do if for any reason you feel unsafe, both in general and on 7 Cups? Who can you contact?
7 Cups:
- Safety Contacts: Rebekah, Heather225, Bookworm4
- Mods in the case of rooms
- Helpdesk
Real life:
- Tell a family member, a trusted friend, someone at work, a member of law enforcement, or anonymously through text, such as on public transport.

Lately, I have been reflecting a lot on the role of safety in online support spaces, and this discussion gave me even more to think about.
What stood out to me is that safety is not only about protecting our personal information. It is also about maintaining healthy boundaries and understanding why those boundaries exist in the first place.
Sometimes when we have positive conversations with someone, it can feel natural to trust them. However, trust and safety are not always the same thing. Reading your examples reminded me that safety guidelines are often designed to protect people before something goes wrong, not after.
I especially appreciated your point that people are not always who they appear to be online. It is an important reminder that protecting our privacy and maintaining appropriate boundaries is an act of self-care, not a sign of distrust.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and helping others learn from them.
