Boost Self-Esteem Month: Looking Inward & Breaking the Comparison Trap

Hello, lovelies, and happy Boost Self-Esteem Month!

While we spend so much of this month talking about how we connect with others—our friends, our chosen family, our loved ones—there is one vital connection that lays the foundation for all the rest: our connection with ourselves.

In today’s hyper-connected world, it's easy to accidentally outsource our self-worth. We measure our value in views/likes/shares i.e. the fleeting validation of social media. We scroll through our feeds, comparing our real-life behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s carefully filtered highlight reels. It is an exhausting habit and a fast track to feeling less than. And it's unfair!

But here is the truth: Your worth is inherent. It does not fluctuate based on an algorithm or someone else's approval.

This February, as part of Boost Self-Esteem Month, it's the opportune time to challenge ourselves to break the external validation habit. We are practicing the art of logging off, looking inward, and finding acceptance from within. Cultivating genuine self-esteem isn't about being perfect; it's about honoring your whole, authentic self without needing an audience to applaud it.

Reflection Questions

To help us shift our focus inward, take a moment to ponder these questions. We'd love for you to share your thoughts in the replies below!

  • If social media disappeared tomorrow and no one could ever see your accomplishments, appearance, or milestones... what internal quality would you value most about yourself?
  • What is one "highlight reel" trap you frequently fall into when scrolling, and what is a grounding, real-life truth you can tell yourself to escape it?

The Inward Connection Pledge

Awareness is the first step, but action is the second! We invite you to join us in making a gentle promise to yourself this month. Copy and paste the pledge below into your reply, filling in the blank with whatever works best for you!

I pledge to recognize when the comparison trap is hurting my self-esteem. When I catch myself seeking external validation online, I commit to logging off and doing [insert one small act of self-care/self-love] to reconnect with my true self.

Signed (with love + your name)

I can't wait to read your reflections and see your pledges below! Remember: You are worthy of love, especially your own.

@Heather225 I pledge to recognize when the comparison trap is hurting my self-esteem. When I catch myself seeking external validation online, I commit to logging off and taking that trip down my memory lane to reconnect with my true self. I'll think and ponder about why, give myself a good cry, write my feelings, and even go open the curtains to look out the windows and let the sun shine in. ✨️

Love, Desiree ❤️

Oh yeah, and to answer the question: If social media disappeared tomorrow and no one could ever see your accomplishments, appearance, or milestones... what internal quality would you value most about yourself?

The internal qualities I would value most about myself are creativity, honesty, and mental strength. ☆♡

To be honest, I'm not into social media as much. I never post selfies, or my meals, or when I go to places and take pictures with the location. Instead, for the accounts I do have, I've made them all Private, and I've been following others who post positive things. The only account where I talk more of my personal feelings, is in my own language, Chinese. The replies I see on that account, is all AI-generated. So, it's more like how I want to get something off my chest, but not really expecting a person to reply or notice. But it's better to share it, than to keep it to myself. That's all.

Honestly though, my self-esteem and self-confidence started to rise after I made a career change last year. When I left my workplace of seven years, and applied for a part-time position in another hospital that's an hour's drive away (rather than a five minute drive for the seven years). Starting in this hospital last May, was the best decision I've made with my life. The self-esteem and self-confidence also began to increase almost instantly upon being hired. It continues to increase, and I've been told by others that I look a lot happier and is more open, less introverted. I've even greeted strangers, and spoken up in situations I wouldn't have years ago.

To me, Social Media is just a form of entertainment now, it has never been something I use to compare myself with others. I only have two active accounts for entertainment purposes. Over the past year, I've learned that self-esteem and self-confidence is based on how I see myself, and that career change was the start of the new me.

@Heather225 I like this statement..."there is one vital connection that lays the foundation for all the rest: our connection with ourselves." That's beautifully said, @Heather. When we cultivate self-awareness and self-compassion, we show up more authentically for others. A grounded connection with ourselves truly is the root of meaningful support. Love you all.
