Mystery chats

I often log in when I have too little time to take a chat. I leave my status set to offline.

People frequently message me at these times expecting to chat. These are not personal requests—my status is offline. And they are not people already in my chat list. They just start a chat without warning.

No one ever does this during the many hours when I am logged out.

How do they know I'm logged in?

This happens to me too. I think they see the red dot that says you're offline, and think it means you are online, just busy. That's my theory anyway. It still seems a bit rude, but it happens to me all the time, and I'm not totally sure how to handle it. How do you handle it?

I meant to post this on my listener account, but you get what I mean. lol

Well, if I am really offline—logged out, that is—they see the red dot too, but no one ever expects a chat when I'm logged out. How do they know?

I sometimes explain that I'm offline and cannot chat. But I've had some hostile reactions to that. So now I just ignore these messages until I'm able to chat.

Yeah, I would just ignore them too. If your setting say you are offline then you have no obligation to answer them, plus you don't want to be engaging in pointless arguements.

Maybe the chats come in at any time but they delay to load when you log in? If that makes sense. Like they'll take a bit to pop up and it will look like they're messaging you when you're on? Idk

Yes that's possible, but I'm not convinced. The system would have to store messages and change their time stamps to make them look current, and delay them only when they are from someone who's not already in my chat list.

Also, on the occasions when I have replied, the person has always expected to chat immediately.

@RarelyCharlie A recent forum or feed post? Or is the status thing glitching?

As a member, if I started a chat like this I wouldn't mind being asked how I knew you were online.

You're right, someone could watch my profile and see the numbers change if I do something like post in a forum. I can't believe many people do that, though, and I'm pretty certain that it has happened at times when my profile hasn't changed at all.

A glitch seems more likely. I did ask one person and they said in the app I appeared to be online, but when I looked in the app I wasn't online.
