Open Discussion: Trolling + Cool Video!

So, I found this incredibly powerful video about trolling, and wanted to share it with our community. As you may have noticed, we have our fair share of trolling on 7 Cups - I thought it might be interesting to have an open discussion on this topic. I'm keen to hear what others think of the video. It's basically an animation of a spoken word poem by Shane Koyczan. Trust me, it's well worth a watch!

You can view the video here.

What are your initial reactions to the video?

How would you define a "troll"?

Why do you think some people behave in a hurtful way?

How have you personally been affected by trolling?

What have you learned from your experience?

Did you learn anything from the video?

If you could share one tip with other site users on how to deal with this type of behaviour, what would it be?

Very moving video.

I've discovered a kind of troll who I wasn't aware existed until I became a listener on 7 Cups with an actual profile picture of my face. It seems certain men will seek out certain woman based on looks (what they are actually looking for in this "look" I'm not sure) and then discuss sexual issues with them. I've had several members approach me in this way and it's not easy to tell if the issue is legit (which I have no problem discussing) or if they are trying to trigger me or get themselves off in some way. But it's enough to make me want to change my pic to anything but my own face! I can't be the only one who this happens to.

@PollyShipwreck I am sorry you are getting unwanted attention. Many people with beautiful faces for avatars have changed to generic or non human faces to avoid this.

It is sad that we need to hide behind a false personna, but people with uncontrolled passions seek outlets for their distorted view of people.

Hey @PollyShipwreck, did you read the blog that @AffyAvo posted about ? I found it even more powerful than the video. I guess when you actually uncover the real person (which is usually impossible), you discover just how pathetic the situation is. We imagine trolls to be these hugely agressive monsters, but in fact, are just children dressed in costumes. I'd really recommend it if you haven't already read it.

@PollyShipwreck

I totally get what you mean I have the same issue..I have had members talk about sexual things and it is hard to decipher if it is actually an issue in their life or if they are just trying to talk in this way to you..I to have thought about changing my pictures to like a mountain or something haha the only reason why I had but a picture of me was to show that they were in fact actually talking to a real person for guests that are still unsure of what 7 cups actually is all about

Same here! It's very hard to tell. But I hate the idea that I would have to change it to be taken seriously. Very unfortunate. I'm trying to be very careful which conversations I take on. Some of them have been triggers for me on top it all!!

@Heather I've definitely had my own experience with trolling/online hate. I'm a big fan of Twitter, and I have a fan account that has a pretty big following. I'm a part of what is called the SPNfamily, which is what the fans of the tv show 'supernatural' are called i guess. in this fandom, I have received hate from people who are just online to attack people for their likes and to just be mean. In our spnfamily, we have all banded together to try to end this hate, but yes it can be hard to ignore sometimes. It still really bothers me when i receive hate from people, but i think it's really best to just ignore these trolls and to remember that in the end, it doesnt really matter what they think. They're just internet bullies who dont have a better use of their time.

@Heather

➢ What are your initial reactions to the video?

I found it really powerful, highlights some of the impact that trolls have on people

➢ How would you define a "troll"?

someone who is deliberatly provoking negative feelings or disrupting, lying and manipulating people

➢ Why do you think some people behave in a hurtful way?

I think they just dont realise the impact that their words can have on people, i think sometimes it is probably teenagers doing it as a joke and not really understanding what they are doing.

➢ How have you personally been affected by trolling?

Ive had people on here encouraging me to commit suicide, and deliberatly using triggering language and making me feel like my depression/ptsd is my fault and that im pathetic for struggling with things. ive had listeners tell me that i want to be like this and that im not making any effort to get better.

➢ What have you learned from your experience?

ive learnt not to let other people's words affect me too much. but that then also means that i dont let positive words in

➢ If you could share one tip with other site users on how to deal with this type of behaviour, what would it be?

report it so that something can be done about it.

@Heather Wow this is just amazing. Trolling is a very important topic because there needs to be a way to approach such situations and you are portraying it in a brilliant way! haha Thank you Heather once again :D
