Taking one last look around the old place
I'm starting to feel sentimental and nostalgic about this good ol' website design. I really want to tip my hat to @cris and @glenM and some other folks I never met who built this place with their bare hands and did so many things right along the way, to the benefit of all of us here.
There are a lot of wonderful things about this design, not least of which the ingenuity. I know most folks don't look at a lot of website markup but what @cris has built here is a masterpiece of elegance and squeezing the most out of every idea. @cris also has a good design eye and the knowledge to bring ideas to life in the crazy fluid world of the web. He knows how to build, and keep humming, real stuff that really works, which is actually a pretty rare thing.
There are also big parts of the design of the site, both as it has evolved up to now and going into this next update, that come from the minds of @Twish and @Laura and @HawaiianAir and @Heather and @Iara and from many many many members and listeners who made suggestions or noticed issues or offered help in other ways.
A while back I met the designer RyanCo who did a lot of the visual work on this and earlier versions of the site and while I know from talking to him he never quite got to see the design he saw in his head exactly as he envisioned it on the screen (and, really this is always true), the truth is he delivered a great design vocabulary and a style that has proven adaptable and very easy to use for many, many people.
(He helped out in some of the early phases of the new design as well, so I really want to acknowledge the efforts of those we are building upon and working with to evolve.)
I got here pretty recently and so I know I'm leaving people out. This wasn't supposed to be an awards speech. I just am going to poke around the site some more this evening and tonight before we update it tomorrow and enjoy so many of the nice things about it one last time.
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn
You have successfully made me teary eye and sentimental hahaha
7 Cups is all about personal growth baked in with gratitude and mindfulness. We are at the edge of a huge new step, of change that wil help us reinvent ourselves. Though its never a bad time to be mindful and thankful, this particular time is excellent to not only look of what's head but also look at the journey we leave behind.
I was not here for the first 7 cups design but I was here for the message system change and I remember how horrible I took it. I refused to see the good things of the new design, I refused to move forward, I cligned to what was gone and I felt all too nostalgic.
This time I am sure its not going to be like that...why? Because I'm a different person, 7 cups has taught me to embrace change, 7 cups has guided me through some of the most challenging moments in my life and 7 Cups has enlighten me to see that loving something new does not mean I cannot grief for what we've lost. 7 Cups needs to evolve and we as a community will evolve with it.
7 Cups 2.0 is not only a skin change is the perfect change to be better, be braver, be kinder and be smarter.
Xian, though you might have joined us a short time ago, you have earned a huge place in this communities heart. Thank you soo much for taking the time to honor this design and all the work those that made it acomplish. Thank you for reminding us that we have to cherish each moment we have in life with the things that matter and to find balance between loving the old and embracing the new
*admits to taking screen shots of many screens last night*
I am sad to say goodbye to this old site, it's been near and dear to us for so long. *waves*
I will miss this site cause it was helpful tools and all the other stuff on this that changed us inside and out.
@carefulCity1996 Ah, the sites not going anywhere - just a quick revamp! All the listeners and tools for support are still here, and in fact itll be easier to navigate and find the resources you are searching for on the new site! :)
Thanks jadie
WOW. I absolutely hate the new design. I can BARELY READ IT!!!!
How do you come to a website where you can barely see the text because it is so light????
This is awful.
@SilveryPaperMoon Sorry you hate it. We are working on contrast, color balance, type size, typeface, etc. to make sure it works well for everyone.
I understand these changes are shocking, especially when you don't like them, so I appreciate your taking the time to share your feedback.
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn Sorry, terribly sorry for double posting, as the text editing menu doesn't pop out the first time
anyways! i shall try to give myself a constructive feedback :D
Overall, the site looks gorgeous. It's modern, it's sleek, it's streamlined, with the exception of maybe appearing a little cold as opposed to the warm nature of 7-Cups (although, this is just my opinion, and I'm a fan of red-black colors than white-blue, hahaha. So it's a bit bias). Maybe, you can make the text darker so that the text looks visible on the white background (if you so choose to keep the white background).
1. The thing that can be improved however might be the chat.
A. The timestamp takes a whole line, and I think it could be moved to the side so that messages are packed and condensed. I, myself, am a person who likes to press enter, so my messages get disappeared into the chat quickly.
B. The mail icon is a bit redundant, since it leads to the chat space. We already have the "Chat" next to "My Path" although I understand it serves as a 1-click way to get to chats as opposed to Chat >> My Conversations
C. The title bar (where the other persons' name is displayed along with those 5 icons) could need improvement. The height of the bar is a bit too large for the icons, and could be shrunken down to save space making the chat bigger. Also, the border could be shrunken down as well.
2. The browse listener tag!

Overall, the separated icons take a whole lot of space. Maybe, you can arrange some stuff horizontally so that the listener information is also condensed, enabling members to search for listeners even quickly.
Maybe, something like this roughly

Anyways, those are just my 2 cents after a while in the new site! I could also provide some more feedback if you want. SUPER DUPER AWESOMESPECTACULAR job on the new design!
Cheers,
A budding poster designer
@Dylandy - great feedback, thanks!
you have a good eye and I really appreciate the problem-solving and suggestions.
cc @ezraBC - the thing about not giving the timestamps their own line is a quick win I think?
@Dylandy can I ask you to submit to the feedback form too? maybe just summarize and link to this thread? that way we won't rely on my fallible memory.
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn Alrighty! May I have the link for the feedback form? I tried to find it but didn't find anything
@Dylandy Here it is.
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn Alright, noted! :D
Thanks for your great effort on redesigning the site :3
I will say that I will defintly miss the old site and all the memories I have made since coming into this loving community. However, I believe it was an amazing idea, by all the executive and administrative people that put it together, for a redesign! I think that the new look is more friendly and very pleasing! Though it will take some time to get used to, I think we will all enjoy it! Thank you very much for everyone who has made this happen!
Love you all! "\ml/"
Just wondering when the app will be redesigned ? I use the app more than the website as I'm on my phone . Thanks :)
@2015ihope
We're working on it right now!
I'm excited. It's going to be a lot easier to use, less crash-y, less of a data- and battery-hog, easier to update and maintain.
We're still a few weeks away, but we're working on it actively right now.
Then we'll probably swing back around to the mobile web view to clean up some of the issues there....
Thanks sooo much !!!
I can't wait !!! I find the app easier to use than the website because it's designed for mobiles . I do agree though , it's a real battery hog .
I just want to thank you and all the technical team for your very hard work ! You're all AMAZING
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn wow I wasn't here for the old part of this website. It must have been really nostalgic haha. I love this community and I hope you all have a wonderful day. Thank you for your work Xian.
