Late August: Update to Censors
Hey everyone!
We are in the process of making the censor list for crisis referals more robust to ensure we refer those in need to the proper resources.
Our goal is to always make sure that individuals in crisis are referred to the proper resources via the in-chat pop-up when they say a phrase that indicates they are in a crisis situation. As Listeners and Members on 7 Cups we are not trained crisis counselors or mental health professionals so it is important that we are always referring those in crisis to the proper resources to get the help they need and deserve.
As we update and add to this list, you may encounter some false positives. Please post them here so we can continue to track and refine the list to make sure that we are referring the proper individuals to crisis resources.
Thanks for all your help in continuing to make sure 7 Cups is a safe and supportive space!
@Kate Glad to hear of this recent development! Many listeners will find this useful especially those unsure if they are experiencing a crisis situation. Thanks for the update!
@Kate Is this for group chats, 1-1s or both?
This sounds good, but I worry that "some false positives" will turn out to be an understatement, and that "the proper resources" will turn out to be imaginary. I'd like to see a more robust process, but this seems to be doing more of what hasn't worked so far.
It would help me as a listener to have more clarity about what 7 Cups means by crisis, exactly when I should refer a member offsite, and where I can refer them to with confidence. (Certainly not suicide.org, for example, where there is no immediate help and the information is not all current.)
@Kate
@RarelyCharlie I always get this referal message even when I'm not in crisis, so I guess with this new update I will no longer be able to chat at all...
Oh wow! It sounds like it's seriously broken
I'm thinking maybe listeners should warn members at the start of each chat that the site is broken—that if they get intrusive messages they can ignore them and keep chatting, and that it can help to deliberately misspell trigger words.

additionnally, the censor always gives an US phone number.
Many of us are outside of USA and don't have access to a phone.
There is a reason why we use a text based chat, and a site that is available worldwide.
There is not necessary chat based resources in all the countries around of world. Maybe it's why many come here instead. But then I wonder what would be their "proper resources"?
And you are right about suicide.org, it's not updated for over 10 years, so the resources are out of dates, most of them no longer exist. And it sure does not countains all the countries.
@TortueDesBois they confused Austria with Australia and didn't reply when I told them and sent them official (government website) crisis websites.
Their only reaction was to delete Austria from their list.
No smiley can represent my helpless laughter and despair at this news.

@RarelyCharlie I recommend https://Befrienders.org it's up-to-date. At least it seems much more active.
"hey" lead to this:

I only realised yesterday that this kind of thing probably causes a proportion of the ghost chats we get.

@Kate i think an in chat popup is a great idea as long as the information given is current i have some suicide referral info on my frofile including links to web based chat with trained crisis councelors as well as current international text email and call numbers but its important the information is current and i think a good idea is also for listeners to have something on their profile im glad more is being done to make people aware in a calm and orderly and nice way about what listener limitations are and referring them ![]()
