March 29: Therapist Directory & Community Launch!
Greetings,
I am excited to announce that we will be launching our professional directory & therapist community this week (likely between Wednesday & Friday). This post is meant to serve as a guide to this update. We will continually add more information here to reflect changes and updates. Please review carefully and makes sure to check the thread for more updates as the week goes on!
As a reminder, we have previously announced this update in this thread by @GlenM. If you are interested to learn more about why we are launching this and how it will fit into the 7 Cups ecosystem, I encourage you to review this thread.
To start, here are a few screen shots of landing pages youll see when the community launches:
The landing page for the directory looks like this:

And the therapist community landing page looks like this:

When you click on the green button, it will bring you to a Therapist signup page!
The signup process to join the therapist community involves:
1) Basic information (name, email, captcha)
2) Public profile: picture, screen name, description, areas of expertise, age groups you work with
3) Credentials - enter your credentials for verification!
Other details about the therapist community:
1) Therapists will be able to PM with adult listeners, and vice versa
2) Forums: The therapists will have a private forum to form their community in, similar to the Listener Only forums. Additionally, you may see them posting in the public support forums. They will reply to threads with a similar tone as listeners. They will not be offering therapy in the forums.
3) If you are a listener who is also a therapist, you will need to create a separate Therapist account. Listener & Therapist accounts are 2 separate entities. (You will need to log in and out depending on the account youd like to have access to.)
4) Members who encounter therapists in the public forum or member chatrooms will be able to send them a limited number of PMs. (For therapists providing message therapy, this will enable each to see if the member & therapist are a good fit. If they are a good fit, the member will then have the option of paying for that therapists services.)
5) Like listeners, therapists will not be able to message members. The initiation must come from the member.
6) Therapist Community Guidelines are the same as the listener community guidelines. Well be tweaking the language on this page to be more inclusive to the therapist community. Please keep an eye out for text changes. To be clear, none of the listener community guidelines will be updated.
7) Therapists in training will also be able to join the 7 Cups therapists community, but will not be providing therapy on 7 Cups.
Information about the Therapist Directory:
1) Not all therapists will be listed in the directory or billing for services; some will simply be accessing an online community just for therapists--the only one of its kind. Its an opportunity for therapists to get support, support one another, and learn from each other. Joining the therapist community also can come with the opportunity to pay for a listing in the new 7 Cups Therapist Directory. This is a way for therapists and clients to connect for traditional office-based therapy and potentially for message therapy (online) as well.
A therapists public profile will look like this (apologies, as this is not the best example! Just a sample of the format and look):

2) The therapist directory will look similar to our current browse listeners page, but will be unique in the following ways:
- You can search by your specific geographic location to see if there is a therapist in your area
- Therapist listings in the directory include offsite professional contact information (if the therapist chooses to list it) and the ability to leave a PM
- Therapists providing online message therapy will not be on-demand/ online right away in the same way that listeners are but will instead commit to a schedule of response to messages, usually agreeing to reply daily to unlimited incoming messages. Members can write as often and as much as they would like, and the therapist will respond with thoughtful, professional, therapeutic responses at least once per day.
Here is an example of what the directory page will look like (note: right now only one therapist is listed on this page, so this image does not provide a complete picture of what the directory will look like):

3) If a member is interested in a therapist's services, they can reach out to them using this contact information.
Note: This is an express exception to the general rule of no offline contact among 7 Cups community members. The rule exists to protect anonymity and confidentiality given that we cannot guarantee safety outside of our platform (learn more about this guidelines here). Because therapists at 7 Cups are not anonymous and because we have their contact information and credentials, they are accountable for their behavior and if they list their contact information, similar to other directory services, it is up to the connecting parties to act within both of their best interests.
Therapists Delivering Clinical Services on the 7 Cups Platform
Messaging therapy is an interactive method for giving and receiving therapy. Allowing users to connect with their therapist from the comfort of home or their personal device allows for dynamic therpeuptic relationships to grow and thrive.
Costs For Connecting to A Therapist:
Members will be able to pay to connect to therapists for unlimited messaging therapy. The cost will be $150 per month ( $37.50) per week. The member will receive asynchronous messaging therapy with their therapist.
If you are a therapist and would like to learn more about the therapist community, let us know by filling out this interest form.
Now, here is my question..
Now that there are going to be licensed therapist, does that also mean, that if it is the right therapist who can do it, a transgender individual like myself, can get recommendation letters? i.e., testosterone, top surgery, etc.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I would just like to clarify.......
@FancifulRelics
Thanks for your question! As far as I know, our therapists will not be able to write perscriptions. You'll have to go to an in-person meeting with your doctors for perscriptions.
Thank you!
@Laura I understand that. I would take the letter of recommendation to my doctor and then they would prescribe me testosterone. That's how it normally is done.
I'm not asking if they can write prescriptions, just letters of recommendation.
I should have been more than, I'm sorry.
@FancifulRelics - I think that will depend on the therapist but it sounds like something they might be able to do.
@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn
Awesome.. I may cry of happiness if so..
@FancifulRelics I think It will depends on the laws of their country (if laws needed them to meet you in person, by example)
@TortueDesBois that makes sense.
Hi I would like to have support and advice and someone to talk to about what's going on at the moment
I was abuse as child
I was in domestic violence relationship
My kids passed away
I could have borderline personally disorder
Need a group to talk to
@Emmapape
Hello Emma, so you can contact directly a listener or enter in the chat, may you want the family support, share your story, etc. Have a good day. Hope you can find what you need in 7 cups. Welcome!
This is such a great idea !:)
😊 Great news!!!
😊 Awesome idea!!!
@Laurai am a state certified school counselor in Michigan. Am I eligible for your directory.
@Tish1982
Just a quick clarification question!
There are two different certifications (as far as I know) regarding school counseling. One certification is through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and the other certification is through the National Board for Certifie Counselors (NBCC).
In order to receive the NBCC credential, the counselor must also be a National Certified Counselor (NCC).
If you have the NBCC and NCC credentials, then you should be good to go!
As far as the NBPTS certification, I'll tag @LaraG who is the one in charge of this initiative and see if she can provide more insight!
@AdVictoriam
These are good clarifications.
The rule of thumb is: if you are eligible for independent practice (like to have a psychotherapy private practice) with your level of certification/licensure, then you will be eligible to provide services through 7 Cups. We are merely providing the platform by which providers can have an online private practice...make sense?
@Laura
Some people here need qualified therapists to help them, not volunteer listeners, so I hope they take advantage of this. I personally won't.
Will talking to the therapists be free? Also, when will they be available?
@LibbyTurtle
I want to be careful answering this question so to provide the best understanding.
Clinical services with therapists will not be free. The cost for unlimited messaging therapy will be $150 per month ($37.50 per week).
There are many therapists who are currently active listeners and talking to them on their listener accounts will always be free.
The biggest difference from my perspective is that listeners can provide you with suggestions and resources, but we are limited to providing empathy and emotional support. This means that listeners cannot pass off what they do as therapy in terms of using therapy techniques.
Hi @Laura, @LaraG, and @GlenM,
Thank you so much for this development. I have been working on my own directory site for Lebanon since November last year.
Regardless, here are two important questions I have in mind:
1. Will this directory be accessible worldwide (i.e., [potential] therapists in Lebanon, like myself can get listed and receive payments)?
2. If this is so, then how will you verify eligibility to practise? In the US, a license is required to practise, along with a doctoral degree. In Lebanon, however, a Master's degree is he minimum requirement to conduct therapy. How will this be addressed?
@Georgii1
This is a free app to help people. I don't think is right ask for some payments. All the work done here will be lose the heart purpose: help people for free. Of course there are here some normal people just very good to be listener and some terapist. But if you want money I don't agree.
@AronIsAlwaysWithMe, actually 7 Cups is introducing professional therapist services for a reasonable cost. That's what this thread is about. I think it is this new program that Georgii was asking about. Personally, I think it is a wonderful idea because there are members here who aren't able to get therapy otherwise. It's part of the continued growth and development of this website. Contacting a Listener will still be free, as will the forums and chats.
@Georgii1
I'll provide what insight I can :)
In the US, there are different kinds of therapists, ranging from Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC) to psychologists and psychiatrists. All of them have to be registered in order to practice.
Similarly, there is the Lebanese Psychological Association, which leads me to believe that it will be possible verify that someone is in fact a practicing therapist.
From Laura's posts above, and the previous forum posts, it is clear that the service provided will be limited to therapy. This means that psychiatrists can not write prescription.
This does, however, allow members/guests to work with trained professionals on using psychotherapy techniques such as CBT. Listeners are not able to engage in therapy with their members/guests, meaning that anything more tha providing empathy and giving resources is outside the role of active listening.
I hope this clarifies some of the questions (the only one I couldn't answer is whether or not you can enter the directory due to your location) and I am so very excited to see you do more!! :)
@Georgii1
Thank you for your questions.
1) Mental health professionals worldwide can be listed in the directory.
2) For international (non US) providers, you will be asked to verify that you are eligible to practice psychotherapy independently according to the regulations of your local jurisdiction.
