Acts of Kindness

User Profile: amiablePeace77

Past negative experiences in life can lead to negative beliefs about ourselves. We might doubt ourselves, our feelings and actions, and over time that may create a negative self-image.

What we think about ourselves is most important, not what others think. It can determine if we feel grateful for who we are or feel ashamed about ourselves. Our thoughts might have deep roots in past experiences and might require attention or even professional support.

However, there are some things that can help us to see ourselves in a brighter light. One of them is simply doing acts of kindness, for example doing 3 beneficial acts for other people, the environment and also ourselves.

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

Thank you!

Listening to music, 7 Cups, having positive conversations with myself, positive thoughts, any of those things bring me peace on a rough, even the roughest day or night.

@akunknown

I find having positive conversations with yourself is very helpful! Listening to Buddhist teachings, meditating and just sitting in the garden to watch the birds gives me peace but also coming here and offering my support.

It’s been really hard to be kind to myself, but I think it’s getting better. There are deeply rooted messages from the past. There are more recent wounds that hurt especially if they echo things from the past. Sometimes I can sift through and discard those things, if I’ve gotten to a point where I understand that they were abusive and the power was on one side. It gets tougher when it’s someone I thought was a nice person, or other people think they’re a good person, because then I doubt my feelings. Kindness to myself involves staying rooted in basic truths instead of getting wrapped up in the conflict. I know we all behave badly at some point. I know sometimes people are going to hurt me intentionally or not. I’m inevitably going to hurt people too. We’re all different, sometimes we’re not on the same page with communication styles or what we want out of life. We all have different insecurities and struggles. I’ve learned a decent person will take responsibility for what they did purposely or not, apologize if needed, or try to gain awareness. Maybe it’s only something that needs to be explained and talked through. In a good relationship, I don’t believe the problem is ever 100% one persons responsibility, so I will discern how I contributed and apologize as well. But I really get stuck on people who I genuinely thought were ok, but end up twisting the truth to make themselves seem completely innocent and make me out to be a complete monster. Relationships take 2 for the good and bad, but I’m learning some people do everything they can to avoid that reality. I can see how it happens, but I still can’t discard the good in them, so I can’t sift through it. I used to feel like I had to know what was coming and defend myself, but now I know it’s better to stay away from these things and not spend my mental time on them. What’s hard is when it finds and surprises me anyway, and it can bring me right back into those feelings. But I have committed to doing nothing, being quiet, and letting them, or it gets worse. They don’t even realize they’re doing to me exactly what they say is so wrong. They don’t realize that they set that standard in the first place. The pain they caused me has no worth to them. They’ve decided the story of who I am. Yet I still don’t think they’re a bad person. I just guess they need this for some reason. I feel bad for the way their life is. My job now is get back to myself and not let it change me anymore.

I am kind to myself now by gently telling myself this is life. I’m going to get hurt. I have to stay true to myself, instead of losing myself reacting in-kind for some sense of justice. Some people are capable of talking like adults and working things out, and some aren’t. Some people expect understanding but don’t give it. Some things are just human nature. I want to be kinder to others by giving them grace for that. It helps me to be kinder to myself to remind myself that nobody knows me 100%. Not even the closest people or those who treat me well, let alone people who don’t. No one knows me better than myself and God. I don’t need to view myself badly because of people who are just doing things to make themselves feel better. I don’t have to let it get to me. I don’t want to let those experiences change the kindness I give to others now and in the future. Instead I will use it to learn more about myself and how to handle others, and try not to focus so much on what I think is fair.

I like how you included kindness to the environment. It helps me understand my worth to reflect that I’m part of something greater, the earth, animals, and a higher power. I like avoiding excess, repurposing old things, composing, and living simply. This reminds me to do simple things to take care of my body and mind too.

@PiecesOfWhoeverIWas

I am glad to hear that you’re getting better at being kind to yourself. Our self-talk if unchecked can become very hurtful so it’s important to notice and challenge it. Sometimes we feel about someone in a way we want to feel about them and ignore red flags. You can’t know everything, and some people are very good at hiding their real intentions and show their true intentions only later.  It does not mean we can’t trust our feelings all the time, but it can help to challenge the root of our feelings when needed.  Getting hurt whether intentionally by others or intentionally is part of life but we can learn to cope with it and prevent hurt as much as possible by setting and maintaining boundaries. I like that you acknowledge that all people have insecurities and struggle and that problems are never 100 % on one side. We all want to be happy and free of suffering. So happy to hear that you want to work on living an authentic life and not let things that happen change you in a negative way and see yourself as part of something greater!
