Befriending your Emotions
Our emotions guide us through life. Exploring our emotions helps us to grow, build healthy relationships, and pursue what we want in life. However, this is not always easy because we might not be able to identify what we feel. Below you will find some exercises to get in touch with your emotions.

What helps you to connect with your emotions?
Here are a few exercises to get in touch with your emotions:
Observe your body and thoughts. It all begins with being aware - not just to the ideas running through your mind, but also to the emotions arising physically. Emotions can start out as tension in the body or mind.
Meditate. The ability to become aware of your body's and mind's feelings can be practiced through meditation.
Avoid suppressing your emotions. Try to sit with the emotional discomfort instead of ignoring it if this is occurring. If this feels too much at the moment, take a break, do something calming and try again for a short time.
Journal. Writing down your feelings can help to release them.
Use a feelings wheel. Use the emotional color wheel as a guide when you're having trouble identifying your feelings. Feelings Wheel
Notice triggers: If you find that your emotional response seems out of proportion to the event, consider whether it was an emotional trigger for you. Practicing this over time, can help to get to know your triggers and understand what you feel. Help Managing Emotions | 7 Cups Help Guides
Observe your emotion more deeply: It might not be the first emotion you identify that is causing you distress. Challenge yourself to go deeper to see if there is an underlying emotion.
Take a step back and breathe. Emotions are not permanent, they will change. STOP for Mindfulness
Talk to someone. Talking to a trusted person can help to identify patterns in your thoughts and feelings.
Seeking Help
Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

What helps you to connect with your emotions?
I don’t always connect with my emotions. At least I don’t think I do. But when I do connect with them what helps me with that is listening and talking to as well as understanding myself, my body, my thoughts, my mind, my heart, my soul, what situation I’m currently in, who I’m currently around, what conversations I’m having with those people, of course music and even watching stuff bc certain scenes bring tears to my eyes, no really I’m serious they do. Watch that show 7th Heaven for one example and you’ll know what scenes I’m talking about (hopefully) once you get to those scenes.
@akunknown
Nice that you found ways to connect with your emotions even if it's not all the time. I hope it will improve though. Just watched a trailer of Heaven and I can imagine that it brings tears in your eyes, seems to be a quite emotional movie. Do you ever sit down after or during the movie to explore the root of your emotional reaction? It might give some good answers. I used to do it and learned a lot about my emotions.
@amiablePeace77
It’ll improve over time. I have no doubt about that. As far as Heaven, 7th Heaven is a teen drama series but very emotional and family friendly/oriented that began in 96 on the WB. I think what you saw considering it was a movie trailer was the wrong thing 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

What helps you to connect with your emotions?Feeling like I am actually free to talk about them otherwise I just hide them so most of the time I hide them
@alysianna
Hiding emotions can be very stressful. Have you ever considered a supportive self-friend or self-coaching talk, meaning to say out loud what you feel in a place where no one can hear you and comforting yourself?
@amiablePeace77
no I have it Can you please explain more
@alysianna
Of course, my pleasure! A self-talk could look like this:
A. "Nothing is wrong, all is good"
B. "You're feeling upset, something seems to be wrong, what could have created this strong response?"
A. "It's nothing worthwhile to talk about"
B. "You feel bad and that matters! You had a rough day, are tired and exhausted and everything that goes wrong is felt much stronger than normally. Do you feel hurt because they laughed about you, do you feel invalidated by them?"
This is hard and it's okay to feel hurt, but you don't need to let them get at you. Tomorrow you might feel different again after a good night sleep"
I hope this helps. Would love to hear how yourself talk could look like 😊
how helpful! thank you
