A hobby is simply an activity that people do for enjoyment and pleasure, usually outside of work. We all have lots of responsibilities, but we also have many abilities, interests and passions. It is important that we have balance in life and make time for all of them as they help us to unwind and relax. Taking the time to feed your creative, intellectual, or athletic sides can make you better in the other areas of your life.

Here are 3 benefits of having a hobby:

  • Enriches Life – Through new hobbies, we are exposed to new ideas, theories and people. This helps us grow and can encourage fresh outlooks on life.

  • Improves overall well being. Studies have also shown that individuals that regularly take time off for their hobbies are less likely to feel low or depressed. In fact, such activities can make you happier and more relaxed.

  • Decreases Boredom – Having hobbies means we always have something to do and engage with, so we will be less bored in our day to day lives.

Do you have a hobby that you are pursuing at the moment or did you have one in the past?

How did it impact your health mentally and/or physically?

If you do not have a hobby would you consider choosing one?

Choosing a hobby is all about what interests you outside of your work life. There are many activities and hobbies to try, so explore and find what interests you. You can find a list here

Boredom has a darker side, it can put people at higher risk for depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders and anger to mention just a few dangers of it.

If you feel stuck in life and can’t see the joy in your day anymore please reach out for help.

Do you have a hobby that you are pursuing at the moment or did you have one in the past? I enjoy doing home projects that are not too challenging.

How did it impact your health mentally and/or physically? They keep me active which is good and gives me a focus.

@soulsings

I think it's good to do some things at home on your own and it can save money too.

@amiablePeace77. I have started reading books. I have found it helpful for me mentally for all the reasons that you mentioned above. It enriches my life and decreases boredom. It’s even relaxing.

@adventurousBranch3786 I like reading books too if they have some kind of uplifting message especially before I sleep because it gets me in a good mood to sleep and not carry my worries into sleep.

@kala

Kala, it's great that you have different things as hobbies so you can choose what to do depending on your mood and also weather. I find it's much nicer to do a puzzle or sit down and read a good book in rainy or stormy weather than hiking.

I got an electric guitar for Christmas that I haven't learned how to play. But I do want to learn. Earlier in the year, I got wrapped up in my mental health so it's kind of just been sitting in my room for 9 months. I do want to learn, I just haven't had the energy or drive to do it. Not to mention, I want to get a job eventually so I'm still trying to figure out how to juggle school, work, and that hobby while also being able to take care of myself at specific times.

@conscientiousSpring8273

Juggling school and work can be a lot and even more challenging with mental health issues. I believe having enough downtime and just do something totally different that gives you fun can help to stay balanced but also help performance and focus. I hope you can get the lessons you need to play that amazing guitar soon so you might be able to play your own X-mas songs on the guitar this year! 😊
