Benefits of having a pet and Pet therapy

Everyone who owns a pet knows that there are many benefits to having a dog, a cat, a hamster or any other pet animal. Dogs for example need to be taken out for walks, so they make us exercise on a daily basis, but they are also loyal companions. Cat owners know how just petting or playing with their cat can be calming and change a bad mood into a much better one. Pets give unconditional love, warmth, and loyalty can provide companionship, connection, and sense of purpose. For many people having a pet changes their day.

Do you have a pet or ever had one and what did you like and enjoy most about them? If not, was there ever a pet you wanted to have and why?

Emotional support animals (ESA)

However, for some people with mental or emotional conditions, the presence of a dog is critical to their ability to function normally on a daily basis. The pet provides emotional support and comfort that helps them deal with challenges that might otherwise compromise their quality of life. These pets are known as emotional support animals (ESAs). The pet needs to be prescribed by a licensed mental health professional to a person with a disabling mental illness. They are not considered service animals under the ADA except for dogs specially trained as service animals.

What kind of benefits do you see for yourself or someone you know in having an emotional support animal?

Service animals

The key difference between a service dog and an emotional support dog is whether the animal has been trained to perform a specific task or job directly related to the person’s disability. For example a service dog would be able to pull the wheelchair or help to lead the blind in busy streets. They also help improve psychological and social health (in those with PTSD, autism, etc).

Do you or someone you know have a service animal and how important is it in your life and in what way?

Animal-assisted therapy (AAP)

Animal-assisted therapy often serves in conjunction with traditional work done by a licensed psychotherapist, social worker, or other mental health–care provider. During the therapy session, the animals provide a sense of calm, comfort and safety and divert attention from a stressful situation. Developing a bond with an animal can help people develop a better sense of self-worth and trust, stabilize their emotions, and improve their cognitive functioning, communication, self-regulation, and socialization skills.

Do you believe that taking animal-assisted therapy could make it easier for people to get into therapy and why?

How could animal-assisted therapy be particularly beneficial for children?

“Animal companions come into your life for an infinite number of reasons, each one being in service to you, your current life experience, and moreover, your soul's growth and evolution”

What is an animal you are grateful for?

Thanks for this wonderful post, Ami!

I've never had a pet but reading this and just knowing how helpful it can be to have pets and how these lovely fur babies become a huge part of one's lives, supporting them and being one to rely on for comfort, is exceptionally heart warming and just very sweet! ❤

Do you have a pet or ever had one and what did you like and enjoy most about them? I have inherited pets from my daughter after she left to go to college.

I had a cute Yorkshire Terrier that looked like this.

He was always happy to see me and would love to sit in my lap. There was a lot to love about him.

But there were also some unpleasantries. He loved to bark for attention. He got into the trash barrel and ate chicken bones. We had to get a trash barrel that was dog proof.

Another thing not so nice was getting up at 5am on Saturday morning to let him out for nature's call. We never had any success having him use the loo lol.

All in all there are many advantages to having a pet but it is also like having a child that never grows up.

Thanks ami for this wonderful article.

Awww soul, that terrier looks sooo cute! I can relate to what you said about an animal is like having a child to grow up. They are adorable but come with "conditions apply", just like us humans 😊

@soulsings I can relate to those things. Is there really a trash can that is dog proof? 😋

And what a cute picture too, lovely to read your post.

@MistyMagic well for a small dog there is a sturdy tall can, but nothing is dog proof. Had to finally put him in a crate 30 inches by 36 inches so he would not get in trouble.

Misty what pets do you have?

This is such an informative and interesting post, Ami! We are so lucky to have these amazing animals in our world. Even if we don't have a service animal, animals can still help us so much! I used to have a beautiful little girl dog named Lola and now I have a gorgeous black and white kitty named Jade. My babies ❤️ I miss my baby doggie

@fruityPond7887 hi thanks for sharing about your pets. If you have any pics of what they look like there is a Tool Icon called picture in the Tool Bar at the top of the post when you start a new post. It looks like a rectangle and is right of center. Just click on that and click on Find File on your device or Insert a web address URL.

It must be fun to play with him. I could imagine it makes you forget all the daily worries in those moments. What breed of dog is he?

@amiablePeace77 Thanks for this thread Ami! I only just found it.

I am a very animal person and over the years I have had many pets and furry, fluffy, and feathery friends. lIving in the country we had land and so we were able to have horses. There is amazing energy about some horses and especially the wise ones that really can sense emotions. They know if someone is being incongruous and they react to those changing emotions.

Part of our stable was used for 'Riding For The Disabled and we found that horse therapy could make a magical difference to those that were physically and mentally challenged. The horses just knew and showed care and kindness often nuzzling their rider in a special way. Often really inwardly withdrawn children would seem to come out of their shell when riding and often hugged their ponies around the neck, and learned how to care for them. Amazing memories.

@MistyMagic

I often heard and also felt myself that horses are very sensitive to human emotions. It must have been wonderful to see kids who usually find it hard to open up feeling at ease with those horses. When you live in the country you're surrounded my nature and that's a wonderful aspect of that kind of life but other places have their advantages too. Are you still having animals?

@amiablePeace77 Thanks for replying. Yes, I do. I have a wonderful doggie companion that keeps me company and reminds me when it is time to go out or to get the food bowl lol!

I have also noticed that having a plushie or soft toy animal that can induce stroking really makes a difference to calming influences too. So even those that can't have a real pet can benefit from some of the ways that animals can work to calm our emotions :)

Oh nice MistyMagic, if you like you can share a photo here "Share with us a photo of your pet" https://www.7cups.com/forum/7CupsOnlineTherapy_157/JustforFun_2350/ShareWithUsaPhotoofYourPet_268931/2/. It's so much fun to look at those photos. I can imagine that a plushie or soft animal can give comfort, I feel sometimes like holding my pillow gives comfort too or just watching animal videos.

You must have truly taken good care of that cat so the cat could reach such a high age! I hope you can get another animal again.

What a lovely thread and I love seeing how therapeutic animals are to their human companions. Just lovely! I've known a few emotional support dogs and they are brilliant and having recently got a puppy for my children I can see just how therapeutic they are! Oh and lots of conditions attached, Soulsings :) I can imagine getting up at 5 am was no fun every day!
