Benefits of slower eating

When I was working it became normal for me to eat my meals within the shortest time. Usually it took me only a few minutes and it became a habit to have conversations about work whilst eating. I guess you can imagine that my digestion was not very good and that I hardly enjoyed the food even if it was consumed in a nice restaurant. My focus was sadly on my work. In the evening, at home, I did the same thing as at work - I ate very fast.

Our health can be significantly impacted by the speed at which we consume.

Eating too quickly can result in a number of health problems.

Here are some examples:

  • Our bodies might not register fullness, resulting in overeating

  • Poor digestion

  • Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke*

  • Decreased enjoyment of food

At one point I felt so bad about my eating that I looked for ways to eat more slowly and something that helped me was to eat with chopsticks and later on I learned about mindful eating.

Participation questions:

  • Do you eat your meals quickly or do you take your time and appreciate the flavours in each bite?

  • What helps you to eat slower?

  • Do you eat your meals quickly or do you take your time and appreciate the flavours in each bite? I spend about a minute before I eat appreciating how much this food helps me and how lucky I am to be a person getting adequate food.

  • What helps you to eat slower?    I find that one way to slow down is to think of all the people involved that lent a hand to make this food available to me.

@soulsings

I like that you pay gratitude before you eat soul. It's also a good reminder to never take food on your plate for granted.

  • Do you eat your meals quickly or do you take your time and appreciate the flavours in each bite?

    Like with everything else I do, I take my time to not only appreciate the flavors and taste in each mouth full of food but also to appreciate the food itself and the fact that I can eat and have something to eat. I appreciate that.

  • What helps you to eat slower?

    I’ve always taken my time with everything I did in my life including eating so I just kept living that way. I don’t see any reason or point to rush like so many people do. While I understand not wanting to be late, if you start early you can get to your destination or finish whatever you’re doing on time or earlier without rushing.

@amiablePeace77 Hey!

I had the same problem until I started taking my gut health seriously, it was so hard, but I eventually got use to it. I started with using smaller utensils like a tea spoon to eat, and a fork, chopsticks as well. However, eventually I substitute to the normal table spoon and it got better.

@Guardian23

Sounds like by using those utensils you got into a habit of eating more slowly 👍
