There were days in my life (and it still happens sometimes) that I did not feel emotionally stable. My inner child got triggered by an event and it was hurting. Something that helped me to calm and find balance again was positive and kind self-talk.

It also allowed me to quiet down and regain control to stop impulsivity. There are days that self calming is harder than on other days, so on these days I would rather focus on centering myself by noticing what I’m feeling in my body.

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feel depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if you feel they are related to any mental challenges.

Great prompt, Ami, thanks for sharing! 💛

What do you do when you’re feeling overpowered by overwhelming emotions?

I usually shut down and isolate taking time to process and recharge, other times I try journaling, or being outdoors, if possible, or all at once haha!

Name 1 to 3 things you like about your inner child ( the most basic part of ourselves )

I love how understanding, pure-hearted and gentle my inner child is.

and 1 to 3 things that you like about your adult person.

Eh tough (': *thinks*

I think I like my adult person self for keeping my inner child alive, acknowledging their existence, validating their needs and allowing them to *be*.

I like how caringly you deal with your inner child! The benefits will be felt by the adult person too.

What do you do when you’re feeling overpowered by overwhelming emotions? I try to comfort the body by yoga, shower and rest. That usually helps reel in the emotions.

My inner child is spontaneous and joyful

My adult works hard and is responsible and caring.

@amiablePeace77 comfort is very soothing. What I am struggling with is that with a loss I have to let go of that person and not stay clinging to what I cannot get from them anymore.

@soulsings

Coming to terms that the love, the comfort you once received is not available anymore hurts but I hope that one day you can find comfort again by recalling the memories you have about them.

@amiablePeace77,

Another great prompt !!

What do you do when you’re feeling overpowered by overwhelming emotions?

I like to embrace those emotions and process it. Understand which one of them are exsistential and neurotic. Self introspection and journaling helps me here. Then I take out time to get rid of ones that are neurotic. I often like to do this along with some meditation.

Inner child - I am so very grateful for it's creativity , cheerfulness and empathy. What about you Ami ?

My adult mind is optimistic , resilient , courageous , far sighted .

@Emerbliss

I like your approach to understand which emotions are neurotic and which existential. Journaling can be very helpful to detect things we might have overlooked!

What I like about my inner child is that it is playful and creative 😃

I'm glad I found this forum(?) Or, actually, it found me!
Okay, question (prompt) #1: What do you do when you’re feeling overpowered by overwhelming emotions?
With me, it's usually way after the fact that I even realize my emotions were overpowering me. Or in my case, completely controlling me. Looking back, I realize now I was never taught any kind of coping skills, except to have a very strong, and usually negative, reaction to anything that might trigger me. I'm trying desperately to be aware of what's happening as it happens, so I can process the feelings (before I go off the deep end) and ACT instead of RE-act.. It's finally starting to work a little, but I think it's more out of necessity than desire, unfortunately.

Question (prompt) #2: Name 1 to 3 things you like about your inner child ( the most basic part of ourselves ) and 1 to 3 things that you like about your adult person.

When I was between 3rd and 4th grade, my dad bought a house, so we moved to a new neighborhood which meant new school, new friends, etc. My strongest memory is when that came to pass, I kept telling myself "No one knows you here, you can be anyone you want, you don't have to be the same person anymore". I wanted to be like Olivia D'Haviland (sp?) in "Gone With the Wind". I wanted to be "perfect" and never, EVER do anything wrong ever again.
Kinda pathetic as an 8 year old, wasn't I? But obviously, I didn't like much about me, but I'll think hard on it.
Until then, I'll answer what I like about me as an adult: I'm extremely loyal, almost to a fault, my better half says I'm the most thoughtful person he's ever met (I AM pretty durned thoughtful), and I really like how logical I can be. Kind of ironic considering my emotions control me instead of me controlling my emotions. But I do have a very logical mind. In every other aspect, I guess.

Ok, I think I got it for what I liked about my inner child. I was very intuitive, I learned really fast, and I was pretty selfless. I even thought of one more! I was very good at drawing. Does that last one even count? 😝

Thanks for the great, thought provoking post Ami! ❤️

@blueAngel00

I could imagine that days feel very exhausting when you’re confronted with situations that trigger you. I’m glad to hear that things are starting to work out slowly and hope that coming here will help you to manage your emotions better. It must have been so hard for you as an 8 year old child to strive for something no one can achieve - perfection. At that young age a child needs to play, learn things, learn to express themselves but not struggling with how they are and denying themselves, this is hard ❤️ .

Nice though that you still see good parts in your inner child. Being able to learn fast is a great benefit in life.
