*You are a failure!*

This is an unkind thought! 😢

*You can’t do anything right*

This is really painful! 😭

I do not deserve this!

I matter!

My needs matter 😌

Unkind thoughts are natural and may happen at times; that is OK. But it is not helpful to be hooked by them and fall into a mental downward spiral.

Having a mental health problem could cause you to experience negative thoughts about yourself which can lead to low self-esteem.

@amiablePeace77 What if it is true though, as I just figure I have to accept that there has to be losers in life and that is my role if I like it or not.

@Devnull00

It must be hard to take over such a role. How could it be different if you accept that sometimes you loose, sometimes you win as everyone else?

@amiablePeace77 How do you unhook from harmful thoughts?

I think my first defense from harmful thoughts is to not react to them. A thought has no power over us. We give thoughts power by our emotional reactions to them. If we avoid reaction and find a way to respond in a meaningful way, then we can avoid the harm.

@soulsings

Thank you for sharing these wise words soul, I agree, a thought is just a thought and does not harm us if we do not make it stay.

Participation question:

How do you unhook from harmful thoughts?

I can have a really difficult time unhooking from harmful thoughts. I think when I am struggling with them I like to make sure that I am trying to reframe my thinking and doing something active with my body to get out of the mental environment. I also like to talk with my loved ones so that I can get support with those thoughts.

Self Esteem Exercise - fill in the blank:

  • I feel very happy when I … am surrounded with my friends and family!
  • Something that I’m really proud of is ... graduating college!
  • One unique thing I like about me is… my eyes and my hair and how resilient I am! ❤️

@soulsings I'm sorry to hear Soul 😞 I know how exhausting it can be when you've been dealing with them for a long period of time and you can't seem to get rid of them.

@fruityPond7887 I am actually finding if I stop trying to push away negative thoughts and feelings and do what I can to cultivate positive ones, the negative ones drift away out of my field of awareness. Let them blow away like clouds on a windy day.
