Self talk is a normal and natural part of being human. It plays a significant role in how we think about ourselves. This is why it is so important to focus on and change the stories we tell ourselves.

Creating a positive inner dialogue will help to improve our well-being whilst when we find ourselves caught in negative self-talk we chip away from our self-esteem and consequently feel bad about ourselves.

However, we can learn to disrupt thought patterns and improve mood by using simple breathing exercises and reframing our thoughts.

Self Esteem Exercise - fill in the blank:

What’s one thing you did well today?

What’s one small step you can take to improve your self-esteem?

What are three good qualities that make you special?

Thought reframing exercise (Please reframe the following thoughts in a neutral or positive way):

Example: They will not like me Some will like me, others not, no one is liked by everyone

  • “I do not deserve support”

  • “I can’t do anything right”

  • No one wants me”

@WorkingitThrough2

Great rephrasing! I love your last rephrase "That is ok because I like me". It is so important for our well-being that we like and accept ourselves.

Hi Ami,

Self Esteem Exercise - fill in the blank:

What’s one small step you can take to improve your self-esteem? To improve my self esteem, I can have kinder thoughts to myself. I can also practice being curious about those thoughts, and test if I'm having catastrophizing.

What are three good qualities that make you special?

Three good qualities that make me special is that I'm flexible, caring, and respectful.

Thought reframing exercise (Please reframe the following thoughts in a neutral or positive way):

Example: They will not like me Some will like me, others not, no one is liked by everyone

  • “I do not deserve support”

    I do not deserve support because I'm not worth it. I won't get better. However, not everyone can be fixed with support. I still deserve a chance to receive support, no matter the outcome.

  • “I can’t do anything right”

    I can't do anything right. That's a feeling. It might not be true. There are some things I can do right, like this...and that...

  • No one wants me”

No one wants me. I think if someone asked you to a gathering, a bday, dinner, they want you. It helps to want people too to Kickstart the relationship.

@tealBear2472

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Nice reframing!

I agree, everyone deserves to have a chance to receive support, not matter how small the chances for change are.
