The importance of saying "Stop"

Some of you might relate to the following scenario:

You have finished a project and it looks good. You spent a lot of effort on it and are tired, but you feel proud about what you’ve done. The reward system in your brain is activated and the feel good hormone dopamine is released and you feel happy!

Now, this is how it should end and you should leave the project and focus on something else, but sometimes it does not happen that way. Instead of enjoying what was just created, a second look is taken. This one now is much more critical and the third and fourth review of the project are even more critical.

At the end you end up being miserable for not having achieved the perfect outcome.

What happened?

Your brain just made us feel good, your mind told you that you did something great. Then, however, the voice of self doubt and perfection kicks in and destroys everything. If you would have stopped at the right time, all would have been good and you would have preserved the good feeling.

Learning to say “Stop” to yourself when you are satisfied with something, learning to feel “this is good enough for me” can help to make you feel better but also help to boost your self-esteem.

What have you done recently that you feel good about?

If you had doubts or second thoughts about what you did, how did you deal with that?

Some unwanted urges for perfection can present themselves in ways which can become very destructive in life. If you feel you are at risk please consult your doctor or talk to a therapist to get help.

What have you done recently that you feel good about? Just finished up my Christmas candy orders. I struggled to come up with different designs.

If you had doubts or second thoughts about what you did, how did you deal with that? Yes, I did have some second thoughts as to tearing some of them apart which I could not do, So I turned off my second thinker and the critic by flipping the station in my head to a different channel😂

@scarletPear1945 I am so glad you completed your candy order.

I change channels in my brain sometimes, so you're not alone, my friend.

What have you done recently that you feel good about? I made pizza dough and baked a small pizza.

If you had doubts or second thoughts about what you did, how did you deal with that? I was not sure my partner would like the pizza but I did not set myself up for failure. I did give them samples, not a whole lot in case they did not like it. That way I would not feel unappreciated.

But they did like it! And I was grateful.

@soulsings

Congratulations to your pizza! It must have been such a nice surprise seeing that your partner enjoyed what you made. Great though of letting them taste first instead of expecting they like it and offer a whole pizza!

I was Invited to an old friend's house for Christmas and I actually went. I stayed as long as I was comfortable then I asked to be dropped off at home, which I haven't had anyone to do anything like that for me

I always try to do my best as I can in my work so when the thought is coming back that I am not enough I say it to myself. I did the best I could.

@kala

Telling yourself "I did the best I could" is a nice way to reassure yourself!
