Dear Younger Self;

User Profile: soulsings

The older I get the more changes I see in myself. Who I was and what I did 20 years ago is so different than who I am now that I do not even recognize my younger self as me.

  • What would your younger self thank you for where you are now in life?
  • What would your older self thank your younger self for doing do you could be where you are in life?

Strange question. How can a "younger self" reflect on an old-age one? I would think it is rather the old-age self that could thank my young-age one. My life has been quite an adventure so far and although I did go through grief and hassles at times, it was all worth it. I particularly enjoyed my family, the places where I lived, the work I did, the friends I made, my colleagues... I am happy!

@soulsings I am grateful to be here at 7cups.

I am very, very, very humbled, to be in Leadership, on the Adult Member side of things.

I am very greatful, to have dear friends, like you, who back me up, when needed.

I am greatful to my 7cups family.

I am greatful and humbled by getting older.

I feel, as we get older, we become more, wiser, then were, in our teens.

At least, for me, that has been the case.

7cups, has helped me, in the wisdom department.

We have, some very wise people here, and a very wise leadership team and staff, here at 7cups.

Side Note: While I am greatful and humbled by getting older, I do not like it, when I have body aches and pains, that come with getting older.

2016. You don't have to rush this. You've made a huge mistake now and you need to step away. It's escapism. You think its important to you and you cry over giving it up because you're afraid of what it will be without it. You have been using escape crutches for so long you don't know how to actually sit and be with your emotions... but if you make space for yourself, you're strong enough to make it through.

2006. You don't have to be the everything for everyone. You don't have to please everyone. You're a caring, compassionate woman and you're being exposed to mortality and what it means to be there for someone... but remember, you can be there for someone but don't forget to make space for your own needs. It's okay to not be okay. It's okay to show weakness.

2001. It's not your fault. You didn't ask for it. People will assume it was consensual if you don't say something... and he'll hurt others. Say something. Anyone who abandons you, wasn't your friend to begin with. Be kind to yourself... but get help.

1999. Leave him. Better yet, don't even start dating him. I know you're lonely and feel like nobody will ever want you... but you're brilliant. Your ability to take problems and break them down, your ability to actively listen will translate into incredible capability. Unlike your peers you know your career path and you'll be damn good at it. He is a narcissist who will hurt you. He's taking advantage of your trauma to dig the knife deeper. Run. And when he tells you that crying is manipulation he's wrong. He just doesn't want to feel bad for his bad behavior.

1997. You have depression and anxiety. Your mother has ADHD and is overwhelmed. She worries about money but that's not your fault. You need help. You need to ask for it. You're being neglected. When she says "you think you have it bad" that's a projection of her own pain. Don't suffer in silence.

All ages. Get therapy. Therapy will not fix you but it will help you to develop the tools you need to adapt to the unfortunate realities of life. You have childhood trauma, depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues and come from a line of generational trauma that could not be helped. Sometimes life hits us with unfortunate circumstances we must make the best of... sometimes bad things happen... but as smart as we are, sometimes a different perspective helps.

But when you do look for a therapist... get what who reflects the person you want to be not the person you are. You respond better to a role model than someone who is just unconditional support.

  • What would your younger self thank you for where you are now in life? I'm sure my younger self would thank me for taking care of my mental and emotional state of mind, for working on staying balanced and calm and doing self care.
