How does it feel to you when someone accepts you just the way you are?
I feel like it is difficult for someone to get to know the real me now because I am always hiding to protect myself. In the past, I met a few people who accepted me for who I was and over the years, they are still my friends.
What helps you to accept others as they are?
Having something in common helps me to accept others as they are. It could be something simple like having the same favorite color to just being able to carry on a conversation.
@soulsings it doesn't really matter if someone accepts or not; what matters is what's done with that acceptance.
Some people accept then ignore. Others accept me then hate. Acceptance is only a piece of the puzzle.
Acceptance in a vaccume doesn't work. It can just inflame selfishness and entitlement by someone glorifying how "accepting" they are and allow poor, toxic and abusive behaviour to continue because someone things because they're accepting that means they're immediately absolved of any form of self reflection or change and that it's everyone, everywhere, everything else that needs to do so.
Acceptance without follow through or action is like cooking a meal in front of someone starving then throwing it away, or building a home then leaving it empty, all the while blaming this behaviour on the starving person, the homeless person, telling them they should be ashamed of themselves.
Acceptance without some kind of foundation followed by self inquiry and nurturing is formless and without substance and even dangerous, and are clear signs of dominance, subjugation and psychopathy.

I think being accepted the way you are is comforting and can strengthen relationship bonds.
For me I think that seeing people as human and not expecting anyone to be perfect helps. For example, once a lawyer friend asked me if I thought he was crazy or something. I could see that he thought I would judge him. I told him that no and I do not expect anyone to be perfect...in fact I like and expect to see small errors from people then I can know I am dealing and sitting with another human being...and also because I am not perfect and don't want to be judged too. I saw him relax when I said that and he smiled and said thank you
@quietlistener2023 you are walking the talk and accepting others. Way to go.
I feel safe when someone accepts me. It opens up this space where I can reside in safety, where I am not anxious about being judged, where I don't have to be careful about what I say or do, where I can relax into whatever is coming up in me and allow myself to be myself. And that includes allowing the ugliness of my anger and self-hatred to come up to the surface and be seen if necessary. And the parts of me that are super silly and childish to come up for air too and be seen. It's a safe space to play in and push up against my boundaries of who I think I am. Love that space.
When I find someone who can accept me as I am it also gives me permission to accept them as they are. Sometimes I bump up against parts of the other that I find difficult to accept and I see that maybe they are parts that I find difficult to accept within myself. My lack of self-worth, self-hatred are such things.

Being accepted just the way I am helped me recognize that I can do the same for others by being a listener and encouraging others.

What a great thread with insightful questions!
How does it feel to you when someone accepts you just the way you are?
It feels like the person accepts me for who I am and doesn't want me to change. I feel seen and understand. It is so powerful!
What helps you to accept others as they are?
Honouring people where they are at and accepting they are the unique person that they are is helpful in accepting other people. We all have many different gifts and should be who we are as long as it is doing good in the world. Acceptance is important to feel heard and valued and something I find quite natural to do.
@LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS thanks you for your kind words. Kudos to @amiablePeace77 who came up with the idea for this thread.
Great answers Lisa.

Well, to be accepted is something that most people seek, of course, I'd like to be accepted, but that is not surely necessarily. Besides, most of the time people seek more than acceptance. I could say that, I would feel great to be accepted.
Accepting others as they are, is how I would like to be treated, so I do my best to do. Accept others, and do not judge or criticize them, because the world is big enough for all of us.
I think when u truly love someone u don’t even need the rule of acceptance
@soulsings I never feel more confident and happy
