Relation Skills

Part of having a good relationship with others, and even ourselves, is how we act in response to words and actions.

  • How happy are you with the way you treat yourself and others?
  • What area do you feel you need to improve?

Sometimes I tell myself "You could have said that in a better way" so I am learning to pause for a second or so, reflect, and then say something. I feel okay with my self talk but when overwhelmed I can become very harsh on myself so working on that too.

@amiablePeace77 pausing is a great way to monitor your thoughts and edit your speech before talking. That is what the STOP method does.

@soulsings Ok I am back. This video was very interesting. I feel this should be used in schools around the globe. This could be a good video for those with severe disabilities and severe emotional impairments, and it could be good for those who suffer from trauma. Thanks for the share. Maybe it should be added to every college and universities psychology department and it should be a part of the training of therapists, psychologists, social workers, ect. This video I feel should be shared in the listener support room here at 7cups. What an amazing video and a very important resource.

@soulsings

I would say I'm 8/10 for the happiness level lol. But something I could improve is that with some people, more direct means are more applicable in communication; and with others, more subtle means would be more necessary. So it would be helpful to recognize different groups and ways within interpersonal communication.

@soulsings I think I treat others better than myself. But I'm ok with that, helping others makes me happy🙂 but I definitely gotta work on others responses and actions. I get upset so easily, I probably need to work on self confidence🤔

hugggs soul ❤ I love you ❤

@soulsings I like how I speak to others. I’m pretty good at thinking before I speak and applying appropriate filters. However I keep most people at arm’s length. I’m willing to listen and talk with them about their things, but I don’t like to try to be close with them anymore. I don’t talk much about myself anymore, and I don’t feel comfortable spending too much time with them. Too much pain, criticism, rejection, and codependency I’ve experienced. I can’t remember the last time I really even wanted to be close with anyone except my partner. But I feel bad for being like this.

@PiecesOfWhoeverIWas I protect myself from everyone giving me their "two cents" on what I need to do to "fix" my life as they see it. So to me that is healthy boundary.

I also can share with others that I trust with other details that I think they can relate to.

You might want to see the benefits of what you are doing as well as the shortcomings.

I wish I could demonstrate greater empathy and compassion for others.

@Olive1Q82 I feel that way too. When I focus only on my own success, I live in a bubble. When I rejoice at other's success., then my world expands much larger.

@Olive1Q82 that is what is great about 7 Cups: it is a lot easier to come out of our buble with an anonymous avatar than in real life.

@soulsings

  • How happy are you with the way you treat yourself and others? I am happy with the way I always take the way people will think about my communication towards them into account. I always wonder, when something happens or changes, who is affected? So I will be clear, contact them, make people feel like I actually care and not forget details, activities/appointments, birthdays and stuff.
  • What area do you feel you need to improve? I feel like I can improve in making less assumptions and overthinking less. Because of this, I worry a lot about what other people think of me as well, and I can jump to conclusions based on this and this affects my way of communication and the way I treat myself and others. Like when I take all details into account, while others might just overlook them, I can easily take that as they don't care as much as I do. It can also make me a bit passive or introverted and raise a fear of failure.

@Michelh1996 I hear you about reading into the details figuring out the secret meaning.

Sounds like you are very considerate.

@soulsings I'd like to think so too! But that also brings expectations, or dissappointment when others are not as considerate you see.
