Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check In - Wednesday September 6th 2017
Here in the UK we currently have a programme on the TV where a number of people have been stranded on a desert island, (they chose this), with no food or shelter, and limited water, and they have to find water, forage for food, make fire and build shelter.
It's surprising how quickly their gung-ho attitude has melted away, now they're hungry, cold and thirsty. There are none of the home comforts they usually take for granted, no phones, no shops, no cigarettes, no alcohol, they're not even with people they know.
It made me think about how much we just come to accept in our life, the good things we have, the things that make our lives better, and yet we often barely notice them. Trauma, and the effect that can have on a person, can rob us of that appreciation. In fact even for people not affected by trauma, that gratitude attitude can easily be forgotten. Yes, I have a phone, but I want a better one. I have a car, but I want a newer one. I have a home, but I want a bigger one.
So I wonder if we pause for today, and notice the things we're grateful for. Please feel free to also share whatever's on your mind, but don't forget to take a moment to consider, what am I thankful for today?

This space is yours to share whats happening in your world, to share the good the bad and the inbetween and to seek support from one another. Healing is tough and its always good to feel as if others are there for you, even if we are long distance supporters to one another.

I am thankful to God for sending Jesus! I'm thankful for my salvation. I am thankful I know God loves me! I am thankful for everything God provides for me. Food, a home, a job, a bed, blankets, and then all the extras. I am very thankful for God walking through a lot of hard things with me! He has cured me and saved me. I was going blind because of a brain tumor but God spared me. I don't know why. But He did. I am very thankful. So when more hard things happen and more bad times come, I know I am not alone!!!! God is love! God is emmanuel- this means God with us!!! ❤️
@KLM3278
I'm so glad you have your faith to give you strength KLM. That truly is something to be grateful for.
God bless
@DeborahUK
Yes!!! :)
@DeborahUK
hi
@sensitiveShade5337
Hi Shade, good to see you drop by. How are you today?
@DeborahUK
not okay
i hope you are well
@sensitiveShade5337
Oh no, not okay? I'm sorry to hear that. When you're feeling down, are there any things you find you can do that lift your mood for a while, or take your mind off how you're feeling?
I'm going to sound very unexciting here, but I like to look at irreverent websites, like the Poke for example. (They literally do poke fun at what's going on in the world). I also have a secret candy crush addiction - sshhh! Perhaps you're more into extreme sports or shark wrestling? But whatever works, a diversion can be a great tactic just to give you a little respite.
@DeborahUK
I watch videos on youtube but Its just not helping me now I maybe need some rest as its 2am but i need to do an exercise first :(
Candy crush is so addictive but it also takes a lot of space xd I was addictive to a game called megapolis, now i dont play that much but I'm 80 level
@sensitiveShade5337
Megapolis - I think I may need to check that out. Mind you, I don't really want to get addicted to another game!
Yeah, 2am isn't always the hour we feel at our most positive is it? Can the exercise be missed for today, and sleep take priority?
@DeborahUK
Haha if you like building things then you will be addictive xd
No no it cant bc tomorrow i will wake up at 11:30am and at 12pm i have a lesson. I have already said that i would do this exercise after cinema but here i am now 2am and still thinking about it
Today im thankful for
- my health even though it's not the greatest
- job get to work with some special lil ones
- lost my van a yr ago to a tree falling on it but im thankful to be able to use my parents van when needed or I also have a wheelchair & wheeled walker that helps me get around
Im thankful for all those and for my nephew for how far he has come in his 14yrs
@Autismaunt14
Poor health can sometimes be a hard thing to find much gratitude for can't it? My partner has a chronic illness. But we've always taken the view to look forward at what you still can do, rather than look back at what you no longer can. Not always easy, it has to be said.
It's good that you have a job you enjoy, and some family members who are special to you.
As for the tree falling on your van, I'm just hoping you weren't in it were you 😧
@DeborahUK
nope no one was in it thankfully, it had been parked in the backyard for almost a yr, it needed a started and a engine and then the branch thought it was a trampoline lol and totaled it out thankgoodness although we only owed 2 yrs left on it but it payed off all but 1 payment that was the nice part. but with my physical health issue ive missed so much work in past 2 yrs ive not been able to afford to get a new one n with my 2 wheeled equiment that helps me get around sorta need a van for them to fit easy. but still thankful for what i do have. :)
@Autismaunt14
Phew! Thank goodness no one was hurt.
Your positive attitude does you credit. It can be hard at times, but when you see the news and how little some people have, or how much they've lost, well - it kind of puts it into perspective doesn't it?
@DeborahUK
Yes always need be thankful n grateful for what we do have n not what we have lost if it be things of function anyway thats how I like to think so I dont get so down in the dumps from how much function ive lost compared to other 33yr olds.
I was in a pretty tramatic, horrible accident today. However, some good things about it: the people who saw it called for an ambulance and stayed with me until they got their and got me a blanket because I was cold from the shock. They were really kind, and I couldn't hear what they were saying because i was drifting in and out of consiousness, it felt nice to hear kind voices and know I wasn't alone.
Then both the ambulance crews, and practitioner nurse, were all really lovely and nice; and everyone at the hospital was very kind and considerate.
There were a lot of other things I could say right now about the horrible parts of it, but just for right now, I am trying to remember the fact that there are good people in this world who care, and who can and are kind to a total stranger.
@sweetMelody95
Oh goodness Mel, that sounds horribly scary. I'm so glad you're well enough to check in with us today. Have you been hurt?
You're right in what you say though. It's in crisis situations like that when you come across some real heroes. People who will come along and pick up the pieces, and not just because it's their job, but also because they genuinely care. I'm glad those people were there for you when you needed them.
@sweetMelody95 Best wishes for you in your recovery.
I'm grateful for all of you❤️
Which means I must also be grateful for the life I've had that's led me here. Though, that one's far more difficult.
I'm grateful that I have enough to give and help others. That being said, one of those "others" is a little girl in Haiti, and Hurricane Irma is headed right for her. So I'd be grateful for any thoughts and prayers you could throw her way.
I'm grateful that I have a home to call my own, even if unwanted wildlife is somehow able to make its way in (like the spider that just crawled on me and made me throw my phone! 🤦🏼♀️).
I'm grateful that I'm finally able to go to college, because I've wanted this for far too long.
I'm grateful for a kitchen full of food. Even if I don't eat most of it. Because if I'm ever again in a position where I have nothing, at least I know I won't have to go days on end without food like I did before.
I'm grateful for heat, because it's really starting to cool down outside.
I'm grateful for my job, because I really do love what I do.
I'm grateful for my reasonably good health. It's not great, but it could be worse.
I'm grateful for my daughter, who keeps me running this marathon.
I'm grateful for thoughts and feelings, even the painful ones.
I'm grateful for love and compassion, including self compassion (which I've had to learn).
I'm grateful for community, safe space and support during struggle.
I'm grateful for friends, including/especially online friends❤️.
I'm grateful for blanket forts. ⛺
