Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Friday 22nd September 2017
Hey all hope you're enjoying your Friday, I'd like to make a quick apology for posting layer than usual today has been not fun.
I would like to bring up the topic of sleeping well today.
Stress from a traumatic event can often lead to a variety of sleep problems. When the body is overstimulated, the brain is flooded with neurochemicals that keep us awake, such as epinephrine and adrenaline, making it difficult to wind down at the end of the day. The neurochemicals remain present in the brain and can interrupt your normal sleep cycle. The result can be insomnia, bad dreams, and daytime fatigue caused by sleep disturbance.
The following are common sleep problems following a trauma:
Flashbacks and troubling thoughts can make falling asleep difficult.
The victim might feel the need to maintain a high level of vigilance, which can make sleep difficult.
For those who experience violent situations, nighttime and darkness can, in and of themselves, bring about added anxiety. and restlessness.
Taking naps during the day might be helpful, but, if overdone, can also interfere with your efforts to sleep through the night.
Once asleep, nightmares can frighten a survivor back to consciousness, and getting back to sleep can be very difficult.
Many survivors use alcohol or other drugs to numb the emotional and physical pain following trauma. These substances can not only impact the healing process, they can also exacerbate sleep problems. For those who are experiencing temporary sleep problems, there are a number of recommendations for dealing with insomnia, bad dreams, and daytime fatigue. Sleep experts recommend trying to reduce feelings of stress, especially before bedtime. Dont watch the news right before going to bed. Avoid coffee in the afternoon and evening. Take a warm bath or soak in a hot tub before bedtime. If sleep problems persist, see your doctor, who can prescribe medications that will help you sleep but wont.
Sleep in a location where you will feel most rested and safe. While the bedroom is optimal, it may not be possible to rest there soon after the trauma if you experienced violence in that room.
Create an environment in which you can sleep well. It should be safe, quiet, cool and comfortable. While it often helps to sleep in a dark room, if keeping a nightlight on helps bring about a more safe feeling, then consider keeping the room dimly lit. It may also help to have a friend or family member stay in the room, or perhaps in a nearby room, while you are sleeping.
Engage in a relaxing, non-alerting activity at bedtime such as reading or listening to music. For some people, soaking in a warm bath or hot tub can be helpful. Avoid activities that are mentally or physically stimulating, including discussion about your violent experience, right before bedtime.
Do not eat or drink too much before bedtime and recognize the negative role that alcohol can have on your sleep.
Rest when you need to rest. It is common to feel exhausted after a violent trauma, so you may need more rest or to rest differently during this time. Relaxing and resting for brief times throughout the day and taking short naps (15-45 minutes) may help.
Go to bed when you feel ready to sleep. Try not to force sleep, which can add to the pressure of wanting to get to sleep. Developing the harmful habit of lying in bed awake for long periods when you want to sleep is counter-productive.
Feel free to say amd share what you wamt this is a safe space. Love you all xx *hugs*

@Softwhispers
Hi!
That post is really helpful!
Cause I lately sleep really late (bad shade) and yesterday I couldn't sleep at all.. something terrible and scary happened yesterday but anyways.. my sleeping schedule is messed up and I no more enjoy my sleeping time. :(
Hi,
Thank you for all of the wonderful suggestions. Sleep is definitely a challenge for me. Various things have worked sporadically, but in general I either sleep too much or way too little.
I was off to a slow start today as I seem to have picked up a cold. I had a few commitments that I had to honor and rescheduled those that could wait.
I am happy to be home now and resting with my giant blanket and hot tea. Ready for a weekend to take a little break.
Hope everyone has a good weekend!
@Compassionatelistener108 nothing beats a nice relaxing evening even if you have a cold (which totally sucks sorry to hear but get well soon) and with netflix thrown in and then it's heaven
@Softwhispers
You read my mind! There is nothing more healing for a cold. Take care and have a good weekend.
I haven't had a normal sleep schedule since November of last year. I helped my ex last December with his health issues only to have him die in January of an agressive cancer. I haven't slept right since.
It has really messed up my moods and immune system.
@Rebekahwriter13
Just wanted to offer you a "hug"
@themainjane thank you
@Rebekahwriter13 Hugs
What can I say about my battles with sleep? Many things.
But today I am battling a depression. The weekend stretches out before me and I'm unsure what to do. All my dreams are about death.
@themainjane My dreams are very much like yours. I struggle with yelling and night sweats. How are you coping with it?
@SoftForestHSP77
I don't have yelling or nightsweats. I'm sorry you struggle with those.
I'm not coping well at the moment because I'm at the beginning of a depression it would seem. I'm trying to get in to my prescribing doctor.
This may be a seasonal depression or some type of cyclical depression. I was diagnosed at 18 with a chemical imbalance. They said I'd always need medication. I guess they were right.
Do you have a professional to discuss your yelling and nightsweats with?
@themainjane hugs. I hope you got to see your doc.
@inventiveOrange1
Thank you, Orange. I did not. Left a voicemail. I've thought of you since my recent struggle with my mood and I still wonder how you make it. I guess we all just have to hang in there.
@themainjane i hope you hear back from then soon hun.
We try everyday and remember whats important. Talked to hubby a little today. He now understands why having period cramps is so trigerring. Surviving another hour, another day is all we can try. Hugs
@inventiveOrange1
That would be a very triggering time. Im glad you were able to get him to understand.
@themainjane I do. I talk to a therapist and a psychiatrist.
@SoftForestHSP77
Im glad to hear you have them as resources. Its hard . . we all need help where we can find it.
@SoftForestHSP77
Ive always struggled with sleep disturbances but never so much the shouting out.
The other day I woke up screaming. And altho I dont suspect a reoccurrence, a darkness hung over me most the day and I was disturbed by my thoughts and remembrances.
I thought of you and hoped this wasnt something you struggled with frequently even tho I fear it most likely is.
So a thought for you and warm wishes for peace and calm thoughts Im sending your way. 💜
@Softwhispers I used to be the type of person that sleep was not only always possible, but it was relatively easy. For some reason my type of depression meant that I slept too much on average. Generally about 10 hours a night. This past year I've had a fundamental shift of not being able to sleep. Sometimes for 3 days at a time. It is a regular occurence for me to stay up until 5am. I try to lie in bed but if I don't lie in bed then I'll just stay up all night until I literally pass out from exhaustion sometime the next day at maybe 3pm. I've never had to deal with this until this year and I find I am having trouble with the transition because sleep was the ONE THING that was easy and I didn't have to worry about all those years.
@Hoxenos really sorry. That transition to no sleep sounds very hard. Hugs
Today was decent. It decided to get super hot again for no reason, but other than living in a sauna it was good! 😜
@Softwhispers sleep is a big issue. Too worked up to go off to sleep then always wake up at the same time. 5 am links up to a bad moment on the night of the trauma five months ago. I usually wake with nightmares or flashbacks and sleep is over. Unfortunately usually am screaming so sleep is over for hubby too. lucky today not to have had both just anxious. Brain has been awful and dark and wanting out. Taken all have to stay away from worse sh. Holding on to hubby until this passes. Im sorry to everyone on here struggling with sleep issues. It makes every day worse. Many hugs.
@Softwhispers
I am so much worried...idk myb I force myself to much.. I take some vitamins to help me sleep... I get more in thouch with side I don't like and become more honest so that helps but and scares me...
@conscientiousPineapple1782
I thought of you yesterday. And Ive thought of you times prior to that. I was wondering where you had gone and if you were okay.
Im sorry to hear that you are worried this morning (or its morning here at least) and I hope it passes soon. 💛
@themainjane
thanks <3
