Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Checkin - Monday 28th August 2017

User Profile: Rain45

I decided today's checkin would be on a topic that's important even if uncomfortable for Trauma Survivors. Recovery isn't easy and sometimes that means having to look at issues or situations which momentarily could arouse a whole host of feelings that we find difficult but sometimes the things we need to do, are not always easy but we have already been through the worst.

For trauma Survivors it is so hard following traumatic experiences to let someone in, to take that risk to trust, and to open up to someone about what is going on for you. It takes a lot of courage, and some people take their time to find the right person for them. For others the inner child is so starved of attention or care, that they are so desperate for that first person to show them someone cares, perhaps seeking it from anyone. All trauma survivors are different. Most Trauma Survivors want to feel safe, and want to feel cared about and the one thing that is needed in recovery is consistency, reliabilty and feeling safe. It is often totally understandable why some of you may crave the attention or support of one person who has been there for you and you do deserve this, as we all have needs, one of them to feel cared for, but this can at times, place a huge burden on those in the caring or support position, even friends or family members because they like you, have their own issues or problems in life. That's not said to place blame or make anyone feel bad for you have nothing to feel bad about and your needs are valid, but sometimes when we are so desperate for support from others, we can forget that those offering support have needs too. For those who can see your pain, your fears, and who have walked side by side with you, supporting someone you know is deeply hurt and afraid of rejection and takes any kind of action as negative or against them in some way, can sometimes make people give more than they are emotionally able to give, and it can lead to burn out. Even counsellors and therapists have supervision to ensure they are okay. If someone you have turned to is also a trauma survivor, that in itself can sometimes if that person isnt healed enough raise issues for that person that they also need time to address. For some, their own unhealed past hurts begin to haunt them and at that point they need to also take care of themselves and get the support they need.

At cups this can happen to some listeners, and if they do leave, or if they have a change of personal circumstance, sometimes that could mean someone not being as available, if at all, to some members as they once were. That doesnt mean people have stopped caring, it just means their circumstances have changed where they need to take care of themselves. Sometimes when this happens, lots of hurt and rejection feelings kick in, instead of us being able to hold onto all the good that person brought to our lives and that good also exists in other people too.

Cups is a great place with lots of listeners here giving their time to try and support others. The problem is, it is voluntary and people come at all stages of their lives. Some are students, some are those who are battling their own mental health issues, some are qualified professionals of all kinds, some with families, some with health issues or disabled relatives they need to care for. In other words, they have a life outside of cups. For some members, who perhaps have limited support, or who perhaps have decided to seek support for the first time, have managed to buid a rapport, and a good one, it can be devastating when the listener is no longer able to be there for them and lots of old trauma feelings can be evoked as a result of a present day situation, which taps into lots of hurts and fears from Trauma time. When those feelings erupt, it can be forgotten sometimes especially when we are in our own crisis, that perhaps the person who has supported you for weeks or months, now needs time for themselves. Some of you understand this well but for others of you because of your histories, your fears and anxieties mean you don't find this change easy to make, and for most people, change is something many have trouble with. Some of you may see someone going as abandonment, hurt and rejection, even when that person has given so much of their time to support you because they care and perhaps more importantly because other people in your past, have left you feeling all this feelings which get triggered in present day situations.

You all deserve that one person that cares about you, you all deserve the support to help you through the trauma you have gone through. Some of you are lucky to have good therapists, or friends, or family. A support system is anything that benefits you and its always good to have different sources of support and to utilize these when needed especially as people go on holiday, or they make be sick causing some Survivors to panic and begin to fear they will not cope or fall apart. Whilst its always good to stick with someone you trust, by limiting your support networks, you actually could miss out on lots of positive interactions with others. But at the same time as building your support system its important to take onboard that life cant be predicted and the person you trust may be there for years, or they may be there for a short time. But that time could lead to a lot of steps forward. If that person for whatever reason leaves, of course initially that will hurt but people will come and go in your life, and part of healing is about learning to cope with changes which isnt easy for trauma survivors who want so much to feel safe and to have something consistent and reliable. The important part of healing is learning to self soothe and to feel safe with ourselves.

So what do you feel you need from your support system? Do you feel you limit your support and rely on just one or a few people or are you someone who takes support where you can get it? What do you feel are the positives of limiting your support networks and what are the disadvantages to you personally? In your healing journey have you made changes to your support networks? Have they increased or decreased? When you seek support for the first time, what are you expectations and are they realistic?

This is a safe place to share whats going on for you, the good, the bad the inbetween. Healing is tough work and support is here for you if you need it. The trauma community has great listeners and great members who have shown what community means when they reach out to others despite their own issues. There is a lot of love and care in this community.

@dancingRainbow45 This is actually pretty good timing for me - I've never been one to ask for help in person or from people who know me and have only done so once, a few months ago, after reading all I could on what I should or shouldn't say to make sure none of the information left that person. I instead tended to rely on finding support online through sites like this or more specialised organisations - of course on here it's easier to build up more of an understanding since you can go back to the same person whereas the other organisations every response it seems is from somebody different. The last couple of days though I've been having a bit of an internal conflict trying to decide whether I should try (or if it would even be appropriate) to get back in contact with the person who I was able to open up to a little and see if they can help me in any way whatsoever - I'm not sure what I would expect even but I think that, although places like this and other online services can be really helpful, to have somebody who actually knows you in person and who you can see and get that additional comfort through body language (assuming they know what they're doing and genuinely care) I find can sometimes be even more important than their verbal responses.

I'm not really sure I have a 'system' in place, besides using this platform. Think when it comes to limiting support networks, positives would be that the fewer people who know what's going on the safer(/less vulnerable) and also not having to repeat the same things over and over to different people to explain something, but then disadvantages would be the guilt feeling a burden or too reliant on them as well as the worry that if something were to happen then you could easily end up with nobody and have to restart with someone new. Since I'm relatively new to recognising what's going on and actually trying to work through it rather than suppress everything I guess I'm yet to really feel like I have a strong support network. As for seeking support for the first time, in the past I think I've been too rehearsed to the point where in that moment I was still suppressing a lot and would get stuck at any questions, so now having realised that, I never really know quite where to start or what to expect since my brain's generally a bit of a mess, so it's often a case of figuring it out as a team which I've found has actually been much more helpful than the way I had been going about it before.

@AMusicalSilence Hey musical glad the post, was good timing for you. It can be really hard to ask for help in person or from those who are perhaps closest to you in day to day life, and thats why a lot of people know turn to online support. Sometimes too, turning to what was essentially a stranger initially, allows someone to be objective, they are not caught up in the day to day goings on in your life, and are able sometimes to see things more clearly as they are not as involved.

You mentioned in your post that you have felt conflict over whether to get in touch with someone you once had support from to see if they could help or not to and not knowing what to expect. What led to you not having contact anymore? What would you hope to gain from asking, and I guess there's always no harm in asking, if there is a realistic expectation, that asking is a viable option. As people say there is no harm in asking, even if the end result is a no, you would be no worse off, unless of course. you know prior to asking, that its not an option as much as you may want it to be. I think too as your post indicated, whilst people can care online and genuinely do so, when you have support face to face, you can actually see and feel that person caring about you, through body language, their eyes and facial features. It doesnt mean the person online doesnt care, but typed words sometimes can make it harder for people to see that someone actually does care about your situation and about you.

I love how you have thought about the positives and yes by limiting your support system, it can make you feel safer and less vulnerable but equally you could say the more support you have the more safe people you have around you to turn to. You mentioned not having to repeat things, but I guess with any new person, you have to start from scratch with sharing, thats how they get to know you. And yes your spot on with the disadvantages, someone could for a whole number of reasons not be there, leaving you without essential support.

I think too just try and be yourself with people, be open be honest, because the more your able to do this, the more people can help you. It is tough to trust and to open up but by not opening up, you may not be getting all the support you need. Thanks for your great post smiley

@dancingRainbow45 Thanks for the response smiley The person who'd provided support before was staff at my old college so since I'm not a student there anymore I'm not sure it'd be appropriate or fair to ask. I'm not too sure really what I'd hope to gain - I guess even just knowing that somebody who knows me knows what happened might make me feel a little less crazy, and I know this person has experience on the particular subject that's been the most troublesome recently so maybe could provide some kind of advice or just knowledge and clarification.

@AMusicalSilence It sounds like you feel this person is safe for you and because they have the expertise or knowledge on your kind of issues, its a person to approach who could be supportive or point you in the right direction. Its always worth approaching them even for some guidance or a pointer in the right direction. You dont lose anything by asking, and if something comes of it, you have actually gained something :)

Head is not in the proper space to adequately chew on questions today, so I'm going to renege on introspection. Words hard. But I'm still here, even if my eloquence is fleeting for the moment following a few days of flashbacks and bouts of inner criticism, hyper-vigilance and ugly rumination. Saturday night and Sunday morning was full of triggers, which did a number on me. Its ok to not be OK, as I often tell everyone else. So I guess I should take my own good advice. Need fort. ⛺⛺⛺ Thanks to @BeeLeigh, @TreesandWine, @inventiveOrange1, @DeborahUK (among others) for reminding me to reach out even when I don't know what to say or how to say it. Burrowing internally just makes it worse for me.

@melliotm Hey Mellio good to see you and no worries on answering questions, just being here is enough smiley How do you feel you can manage the bouts of flashbacks, inner criticism and hyper-vigilance more than perhaps your feeling able to right now? What has worked for you previously? What happened over the weekend? You dont have to share if you dont want to but I wondered if it would help you to look at what triggered you? Withdrawing internally is not always the best thing to do when your feeling like this so yes I agree with others who say its okay to not feel okay and you can reach out even when things sux as they may feel today for you.

My support system is small. It's mostly two people. One of them being my therapist. I hate the almost pity like behavior that people tend to show when they know things. They treat you with kid gloves. I don't want that. I have you guys. I'll be okay. ❤️

My support system is a hap hazardly cobbled together set of people, websites, helplines and anything goddamned else that will help me. I never had a support system until I started looking for one myself, so I guess i've always put a little bit here,a little bit there, and found someone else to help bridge different bits of the gap. I expect very little from people and try to only ask what they can and are willing to give. Its kinda isolating though, I think I keep most stuff in my head no matter how many different outlets I collect.

@Lilibuth12 Hey Lilbuth smiley It sounds like all those hap hazard cobbled bits of support are missing something from your post? Support systems are what we make them and what we get out of them. If something isnt working, try something else. Sometimes we have to try and few routes before we find the things that work for us. Perhaps because you keep a lot of things in your head instead of putting it out there with someone, do you feel this could contribute to you feeling isolated, because you still carry aroud burdens that perhaps would be good shared in your support network?

I experienced some severe trauma today. I'm not sure how I'm going to cope. I might try making a Dr apt. in the morning, but I doubt that will do much good. :'(

I guess I could call LifeLine or Samaritains tonight if it gets bad.

I really feel like I am falling apart right now. Not just because of what happened. But because of the reactions of some of those around me. :(

@sweetMelody95 Hi Melody Im not sure what trauma you have experienced today and Im sorry you have gone through something terrible for you. If you need help please do not hesitate to call a doctor, or even consider going to the hospital. If you need medical attention please seek it. Reach out to others for support, and dont sit alone with something that your obviously finding distressing from your post. Your physical wellbeing is important, emotional support is important to but you need to take care of yourself physically.

If you dont need physical support or medical care and things spital for you where you dont feel able to cope, yes please do call emergency crisis lines and if you feel ready and more stable, there is always a listener here you can speak to.

You mentioned about reactions from others around you. What was it about their reactions that has left you feeling as you do?

It's been the same for me.. for the first time I'm trying to find a support system for myself .. I've been alone since as long as I've known. My family don't know much about me, even tho he abuse came from my family and teachers in my early years. Even now whatever little she knows my mum feels I should.just move on and not dwell on things.. when honestly I'm falling apart . I have a therapist v recently.. doing this coz I've got two kiddos and I need to be there for them and my hubby .. he is v supportive, but I've still not had the courage to really tell.him about my past..

I long for support , and someone to believe me.. cups has helped me get going on that direction. But I still feel.lonely.. I listen to a lot of friends share personal issues with me , but some how I can never open up about mine.. the weight of the silence for so long doesn't allow me, besides the pity or non belief is worse .

@energeticPenny8

It must be very hard if your mum is trying to diminish something which has affected you greatly, and without even trying to learn more about the situation and your feelings about it. It's understandable why you would feel discouraged about sharing when that's been viewed in your life as something you should avoid doing.

To be listened to with unconditional positive regard is completely liberating, basically to be heard and accepted, without judgement. Because just to voice what feels so unsayable is a massive step to processing your trauma. And it sounds like you're edging towards wanting to share what's on your mind. Maybe as you grow more comfortable with your therapist you may feel able to share more. Maybe also by being part of this community you might begin to see there is no shame in your story or your feelings, and others lives have similarities to your own. Just as you feel compassion towards them, so too others will feel compassion towards you.

I just saw another thing to audition for and it made me think of here and all of us. It's a program that uses theatre / actors to protray mental health isuses to need the stigma and promote dialogue and healing. They use "real peoples stories" and turn them into monologues and scenes. Wow!! This could be maybe pretty cool??? They go to midldenschools, highschools, colleges, conferences, trainings and hospitals. What do you all think?

@KLM3278

It sounds powerful!

I remember a few years ago seeing a mini play featuring people with learning disabilities. It was about abuse, and the main character suffered in silence as he was bullied terribly, and it was inferred the abuse went beyond that too. This was a non speaking part, and it's not uncommon for a person with a learning disability to be without verbal communication. So the play continued, his silence continued, people around him pondered and theorised on why he was off his food and more subdued, but they couldn't get to the bottom of it. Until somebody said to him, 'it's okay. You can tell me anything. You're not in trouble. Is there anything you want to talk about'.

And with that he spoke, and spoke, and spoke. All the pain, the fear, the shame, the secrecy, the threats, the lies.

It was just so incredibly powerful. The hairs on the back of my neck were on end. I've never been moved by a play so much before or since. So yes, I think done sensitively, it can be incredibly powerful, educational, and enlightening. Fingers crossed for you 🤞

I am sickly. Sometimes I look in the mirror and see it for what it really is. What other people see. Most of the time I don't. I keep doing this, down even more weight. I pretend it's my disease but it's really my disordered mind, but I don't care. I'm slowly dying inside and letting it happen. Some day I will fall asleep and probably not wake up. I'm sorry. If people knew they would never forgive me.

@KatieMoon1 Katie Im reading between the lines here so please correct me if Im wrong, but you sound as if your battling disordered eating of some kind perhaps anorexia? Its so hard when someone has to do battle with an eating issue, and often they dont see what others do and your right, the anorexic goblin is the voice that spurs you on to lose weight, or the disordered mind as your post said. It is so important to get help and support for any kind of eating distress no matter what the problem is and the sooner the better chance of recovery. Its common for trauma survivors to have issues with eating, and there is support out there if you can do battle with yourself and reach out to someone about this. What support do you have around this, and have you been able to be honest with anyone fully about what your living with?

I don't know what country your in, but it may be possible that your doctor may be able to get you some specialised support which I know can be really hard for someone with an eating disorder to take, because often the disordered mind doesnt want this, or the goblin as I call it but sometimes it can be really helpful that one person knows who can appreciate the struggles you may be going through and who could offer some additional support

My doctor has referred me to outpatient nutritionist. I am also on a waiting list for individual therapy, but it's 4-6 months long. :/ I am talking to a therapist on here for now and it seems to be helping, even just to have someone to talk to who understands. So, I am not without support at all. It's just so overwhelming at times and feels it is not worth the struggle.
