Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Monday 4th December 2017
Hi everyone!! Hope your Monday is going well so far :)
Today I want to talk about parents. Just looking at that word may give you guys any range of emotion. Anything from comfort, to fear, to anger, to frustration, to joy. Parents are such an important and influential part of our lives. I read an article today that really set me off and I still feel rather triggered by it. It talked about how parents currently see their children as the most important people in the family and that historically, parents were the most important and that we should go back to that.
I just can't subscribe to that view. Most of the pain I've seen in adults is because of their parents being more "important" than their children. Narcissistic parents can just do SO MUCH damage. The children can end up with lower self worth, think everything is their fault, and never put themselves first. I think another symptom could be that children will grow up thinking age automatically means respect, but at the end of the day, we all need to earn and upkeep respect. Bringing a child into this world and hitting all the check boxes for survival does not mean that parents automatically deserve respect and praise. Wishing you had more out of your parents is also not synonymous to being ungrateful.
I've struggled with feeling that I was ungrateful. My parents always would say to me "I didn't realize we were such horrible parents". There's more than two types of parent, good or bad. And it doesn't mean that you're automatically good because you're not bad, or vice versa. My relationship is now getting a bit better with them because they're being less defensive, but having boundaries with them, and being assertive about my needs, like not being able to visit, can be very hard even still.
How do you guys feel about your parents? If you could sit them down and talk to them, and they would listen 100% right now, what would you say to them? Remember that it is perfectly acceptable to both love someone, and be mad at them. It is ok to not be ready to forgive. What does your heart tell you you need to say to your parents?
The holidays can be a tough time for survivors because of the family dynamic often being quite strained. You may not be able to tell your parents this stuff in person, but perhaps letting yourself think the words, and know that it's ok to think them, will help in some way through the holidays.
If this topic was too difficult a road to go down today, don't worry about it. How is your day going? I'd love to hear from you guys :)

@Hoxenos
Hey! I feel a lot better today no idea why :)
I dont want to talk about my parents because there are things that hurt me so I wouldnt like to open those memories and answer your questons. I hope you understand..
@sensitiveShade5337 Thats absolutely okay Shade, you dont have to discuss anything you dont wish to do
Im glad todays feeling a little better for you. Whats made that difference for you shade?
@dancingRainbow45
I don't know what made the difference actually but I feel okay
@sensitiveShade5337 Well I really hope your day continues to be a good one for you and I hope its one where you can maybe smile a lot more and begin to feel good about you ![]()
@dancingRainbow45
This day is actually here! I went shopping and bought a beautiful dress and although I think I'm fat and saw that on the mirror, the dress is making me beautiful! :)
@sensitiveShade5337 Well sometimes when people look in the mirror they dont always see whats truly there because they can also have a really negative self image but Im so please your able to experience feeling beautiful in that lovely dress you brought
What did you like so much about the dress that you decided to buy it ?
@sensitiveShade5337
I'm really glad you're feeling better today!! And absolutely no worries about not opening that can of worms. You are listening to your bodya nd your needs and you know you can't go there today. That's a good thing :) Good work Shade!
@Hoxenos
I could open up a little but I know it will make me feel down and also it will change the thoughts of my parents I have now, meaning that the atmosphere between my parents it's good atm so I wouldn't like to just go to the past
@sensitiveShade5337 Shade, just be honest with yourself and listen to yourself. You know when you're ready. If you want to talk about your parents because you believe it will help in the long run then I encourage you to do it and we are all here for you, but if you don't think you can do it right now, then that is ok. Do what you need to do right now. There's no people pleasing here, only figuring out what is best for yourself.
@Hoxenos
i don't believe it will help talking about it.. :( and I'm not ready to say that especially on public like here.. so many people checking in every day, I never know who is here to hurt me or not.
@sensitiveShade5337 The fact that you're able to check in on your emotions and know this isn't a good time for you to go into this, that is a good thing. It is a form of introspection and being able to listen to your feelings. It's a step in the direction of knowing how to control your emotions. Great job, Shade!!
@Hoxenos
really? Well that's good then!
@Hoxenos Great post Hox and I share your sentiments and thoughts on parents. To me there are two kinds of parents, blood or birth parents where there is purely a genetic link but says nothing about parenting in the sense that anyone can have a child but who maybe doesnt have the parenting ability or skills, let alone the emotions and feelings parents should have. And then there are the parents whether blood or not, who protect, love, keep safe, their child, allowing them to develop into a wonderful human being who is allowed to make their choices, make their mistakes, but are still loved. To often we hear of how children should respect their parents and of how you only have one set of parents but what about if that parent or parents have done nothing to earn the childs respect. Children should not be expected to show respect when they may have been treated abismally by parents.
I am someone who when asked about 'birth family say I have none because I left my family behind for the sake of my own sanity and safety. To me I have people in my life now that I consider family, even if they are not blood related and have done far more for me in my life, than my own parents did. Does it make me sad around holidays, of course, because I think there will always be that part of me that wishes my own family were like those I now have in my life. but equally I count myself as blessed to have the people in my life I have now. People often say you cant choose your family but I happen to believe different. Perhaps people need to consider what family is about, what it means, what it encompasses instead of thinking of family as just blood related. Just my thoughts for you
And though Christmas is much over hyped I will spend some quality time with those who I love and trust and who I consider my family and who have a special piece of my heart that not many people get to have
@dancingRainbow45 I love this! I have many ADOPTED family members by choice. I spent the last week in another province visiting my daughter and new grandson. While I was there, I was able to reconnect with my adopted dad and brother who looked out for me from the ages of 16-19 while I lived in that province. He was my dads high school best friend. These 2 men protected me from my abuser and I dont think I have ever felt more safe than when I had them in my life and I was reminded of this when I was with them. There was a moment when we were visiting and reminiscing, that I became so overwhelmed with this feeling that I all of a sudden started crying (very unusual for me) and made sure to let them know just how significant they were to me and what an impact theyve made in my life.
@purpleWest8143 Am so pleased that you have these people in your life Purple and sometimes its people not blood related that protect us and give us that sense of safety and love that sometimes is much lacking in blood families. To me you have what I think family is all about. And I am thankful you have people looking out for you and who are there for you :)
@purpleWest8143 Aw Purple. I'm so happy that your chosen family was there to protect you and help you feel safe. It's amazing how hard that can be, and frustratingly simple it feels like it should be! I'm glad you were able to talk with them about the impact they had with you. :)
@Hoxenos so simple as in we should all really feel like everyone around us is looking out for each other all the time. I have hope that the world will become more like that and do see a lot of love in my community and people doing good things for others ❤️
@dancingRainbow45 I agree that we need to differentiate between blood relatives and chosen family. I think it's a super important distinction to make, and I think it's great to get reminders that we are allowed to do this.
I also think that parents can be a bit of both. I have decided to keep mine in my life as long as they are always improving as people and working on our relationship, and whenever I feel the relationship has become one sided again, I take a break from them.
I feel like a lot of it comes down to acceptance of feelings, and deciding to do what's right for you, and there's no guilt or shame in that :)
@Hoxenos Absolutely agree and people are in different situations concerning family. But for some, their family are not safe to be around and its okay to remove yourself from that equation and to protect yourself and that should always be important. And so new families can be built. For others who have suffered trauma their nloof family are supportive and amazingly which is great to see and hear about. For others, families will always have their problems and there may always be disagreements or generation gaps and you have to find peace with things if there is refusal to listen or deal with certain situations. Everyones family is unique :)
Hello
Thanks for tagging. I am still very sick with this cold that is not getting better. No sleep for coughing. Nothing seems to be helping.
My family knows I have a weak immune system and I can not be around them when they are sick. But they keep exposing me to there junk. All of them are well now and I am struggling. I am going to get me a room at the hotel next time someone gets sick.
@scarletPear1945 Hey Pear, yeah I noticed that you've been in the tag list all along with a typo! I fixed that up for you in the original file so it should be all good now :)
It's very frustrating when you assert your needs and people do not listen. Going to a hotel is one strategy, but it does border a bit on avoidance. If you could have an imaginary conversation with them about this (and they would listen no matter what) what would you say to them?
@Hoxenos
I just don't think you all have any consideration for me. I am always stretching backward to do for them all and I need some love. I need a break, I need to feel like I am more than your housekeeper, dishwasher, doctor, clean up woman when ya make a mess everyone runs to me. I need some me time.
I would like a kind word or a hug sometimes
@scarletPear1945 Hope you start to feel better real soon Scarlet, being ill sux. Sending lots of tlc :)
My mother has schizoid affective disorder. She was detatched, neglectful, paranoid, critical, abusive, psychotic, etc. My Bio Father abandoned me and my mother when he found out she was pregnant with me. my step/adopted father began raping me at age 2, was a drug addict/ alcoholic, beat me, and my mother, and brother, and threatened to kill us if we ever told or tried to leave. My mother's mother is schizophrenic and her father was an alcoholic, and ritualistically abused me. I had ZERO frame of reference for what a normal parent should be before having children.
Then I became a mother. The extreme depths of pain I have experienced in my life has been matched in contrast with great joy as a mother. Somehow (i credit my God given ability to dissociate all the horror of my childhood and his enduring image in me despite what was done to me) I was able to embrace motherhood and thrive in it. I loved being pregnant and I love training and encouraging my 5 children. I now serve as a childbirth educator and birth doula helping people become parents and I love the opportunity to help them learn how to make healthy wise decisions for themselves and their children. I teach ways to prevent abuse and trauma in the home. I am studying to be a marriage, family, and individual therapist in hopes of helping parents and families both heal from trauma and prevent it.
So the word parents has had a lot of sting to it for me. But it has also brought a lot of JOY and im hoping i can help other families enjoy something similar.
also as a christian I enjoy knowing God is not only my heavenly father but he is a different kind of father than any earthly father. I used to really struggle in this area. I knew he was real and in control and always present but in relation to my abuse i felt like that wasnt exactly comforting. how could he be there and not stop it from happening. As i have grown in my faith I have understood more and more that God is not like the abusive parents I had. He is not only with me He is for me. He sees a much bigger picture than I do. He cares about what happened to me and he is using it for good things. I may not understand it completely but i am starting to see how he can transform my tragedies into beauty.
@copingwithtrauma What an inspirational story. You've used what you learned and felt and made something great out of it. You used your pain with your parents to know what not to do. It is amazingly strong of you to not enter into the cycle and instead break free and do what those before you were not strong enough to do. Thank you so much for sharing this with us and I'm glad that being a parent brings so much joy to you despite the despair you've faced.
@Hoxenos
Thanks so much! I never connected the good and the bad till this question. It was good to think through both sides in one spot.
I read the title of this thread, felt immediately sick.. didn't dare to read the rest of the description even though a few words hit my eyes by accident. I have scrolled straight to the bottom to post this without reading anyone else's posts (sorry). But it is bedtime here and I don't want nightmares. Which I easily get from thinking about parents. Ugh. I get scared to even think of it this time of night. Made me wish I didn't log in. But I thought I would get it off my chest and say goodnight x
@Kuma0187 Take care of you, Kuma. Perhaps this is a topic to come back to in the future when you feel ready, and it's ok to not feel ready right now.
@Hoxenos
Thanks
Parents. ParentsParentsParents. Hm. Well, interesting subject. Everyone wants to make check ins difficult now huh? 😋
Momma,
I love you with everything I have. I literally cannot imagine my life without you, and that makes me grateful we are so close in age. You are my best friend. I would do anything for you, and you would do anything for me...now. But, what about when I was younger? You always took my dads side. Youve said the way I was raised is your biggest regret, and I really do believe you when you say that, but was it not painfully obvious how badly I was hurting at the time? Your young daughter was covered in self inflicted wounds to show the hidden ones no one believed existed...but you still never believed me. You thought it was me. I know you were young and naïve, but I also know youre smarter than that. It wasnt me Momma. I was doing the best I could, but my own father was destroying me daily...and you really thought that I was okay because I fought back? Really?? Thats not even the worst part though. The part that hurts more than anything else is that you threw me away. You seemed shocked when I said that to you a few years ago, like you didnt understand how I could have seen it that way. But thats exactly what you did. Your daughter was crying out and trying to get someone, ANYONE to listen...but you guys kicked me out. Youll never know what I went through after that. I couldnt bear to put that on you. But part of me does blame you and my dad. I dont know if that will ever change. You took that stupid social workers word over mine. You sat there crying. I know it was a tough decision for you, but it isnt one you had to make. I was going away to school in the fall if you wouldve just let me. Instead...you forever altered the course of my life. You kicked me out, and made sure my entire family wouldnt let me stay with them. I got $300 for turning 18 and graduating high school...and then I had to use most of it for a one way plane ticket to stay with the only person who had a room for me. Do you have any idea what happened to me after that? I think you might. Ive seen it on your face. Ill never tell you, but I think you do have some idea. You didnt mean for that to become my life, but you made the decision that ensured it would. You placed me in a lose-lose situation. There was nothing I could do. You threw me away, and then everyone just basically acted like those years I spent in Florida never happened. I dont have that luxury. Those years will be with me for the rest of my life. They changed everything. Literally everything. Rape is one thing, but I learned quickly that sexual abuse is the worst. I wouldve gone back home and dealt with my dad at any moment if it meant only being physically and psychologically abused instead. But you threw me away and, in doing so, you sent me to my abusers. You sent your broken daughter into the hands of people who destroyed what little was left of me. I love you Momma. I really, truly do. I will continue to spend as much time as possible with you, because I love spending time with you and the rest of my family. But, you completely destroyed your own daughter, and I can never forgive you for that.
Dear man who I call something I cant say here,
Why? How? I genuinely, even after all this time and literally studying this, do not understand. I dont understand how you could treat your own daughter the way that you did. I dont understand how you could raise your son to laugh as you hurt me. I dont understand why I was never good enough. I tried so hard, but I was never good enough. You constantly tore me down with your lies as you built yourself up with the same. I killed that standardized test, and you said I couldve done better. I killed it in my art classes, but you couldnt have cared less. Im short. Im fat. Im ugly. Im stupid. Im worthless. Im useless. Ill never do anything with my life. Im irresponsible. Im lazy. I cant do anything right. Im clumsy. Im messy. I could go on and on for days. You drilled those things into my head on a daily basis. Youd scream them at me as you threw me around. Or youd laugh as you taught my little brother to see me that way, to treat me that way. I got rid of you. You were out of my life. I hadnt talked to you in I think 2 or 3 years? But then I got just the worst possible news: Your wife was pregnant. With twins, no less! I hoped it was two of the same gender. Its harder to play the boy against the girl when you only have two girls or two boys. But it was one of each. Theyre only 2yrs old now, but Ive already seen it. Ive seen the same hatred in your eyes that used to be directed at me. Shes only 2. You only have both of your daughters in your life because Im not afraid of you anymore. Neither of us asked to be born, but I promise you this: If you ever lay a hand on my baby sister, I will fight you in court. You will not treat her the way you treated me. You will not ruin another child, as you create another decimated adult. You. Will. Not. Hurt. Her. I refuse to watch you play them off each other like you did to me and my little brother when we were growing up. When Momma was my age, she had an 11yr old and a 6yr old. I am more than old enough to be a mother to your 2yr olds and, if nothing else, I will show that little girl that someone believes her and is willing to fight for her. Because I will fight for her. I will do whatever I can to protect her. You dont stand a snowballs chance in hell of hurting her the way you hurt me. Try me. I dare you.
As a side note: My step dad is basically the best guy ever, and having him has really helped me and my brother. I have nothing but positive things to say to and about him. He's one of the best things to happen to our family.
@BeeLeigh
Thank you so much for sharing this with us Bee. I think it's healthy that you know you cannot forgive them, because at the end of the day, some things jsut can't be forgiven and that's ok. You were given such a difficult road to walk despite never choosing is that that is an infinitely brave thing. Every day you live you gain strength and that is so inspirational to me. I also think it's incredibly brave that you are going to stand up for your baby sister. There are people out there that their abuser will have control over them forever, and despite them knowing the pain another child is going through, still feel powerless to help. You are so strong and brave, Bee. Amazing.
@Hoxenos
I held them both the day they were born. Later that same day, after my step mom had dealt with 34hrs of active labor followed by an emergency c section, I took my grandma up to the hospital to meet her new grandbabies. I was holding this tiny, beautiful little girl...as I saw my dad subtly treat my step mom the way hed treated me. I saw him silence her and I saw the look on her face. It broke my heart to see that. I looked down at my newborn baby sister, and I promised her Id always be there for her. I cried when I went home that day, because I know what shes in for, and she doesnt deserve it. I cant let him hurt her. I may not be able to prevent everything, but I can show her I believe her and that there is someone who will fight for her. Shes my baby sister, but Im 25yrs older than her. Both of those kids will know me and know they can trust me and come to me with anything. I wont let him destroy them like he destroyed his first set of kids.
@BeeLeigh
Hey big sis, theyre going to love you so much for that. And Im full of admiration for you.
Sorry, words are short as its late here, but I just had to acknowledge you going above and beyond being a sister. ❤️
@DeborahUK
Aww 💜
@Hoxenos this post was exactly what has been on my mind last few days .. i can never see myself sitting down with my parents ..
Even if I remotely disagree or state my opinion I'm told I'm being v hurtful and rude and my mom, I just end up feeling guilty and leave it.
I've drawn lines , some times even tho words are not said i see the dissapproval , and made to feel im not including her in our family lives .
If I ever told her about the past she'd over react and then blame herself .
So for now I can't talk to them.
@energeticPenny8 It is so infuriating when boundaries are not respected and when they don't even need to speak to still make you feel s small... that is control and power and is not healthy in any sort of relationship. I'm so sorry that you still go through this. You say if you ever told her she would blame herself... but wouldn't you want to know? It may be hard to come to terms with, but maybe if she would blame herself it is because she is in part to blame. She may not be the only one to blame, but the fact is that this is not your burden alone. There were many players involved, even if it doesn't feel like it. Environments of silence are created by all the people involved. I'm not telling you to tell her, but rather, that it is ok to tell her. If you ever d want to, that door is definitely open.
@Hoxenos thank you .. yes I guess for the first time I'm thinking about it.. atleast.. earlier I couldn't even bear to go there or discuss this topic alone
