Trigger Warning Rules Review

Hello everyone,

A few months ago, we've had a discussion and two surveys on how we want to handle trigger warnings and how we want to call them. I shared the results on October 6th 2023 here.

The rules we established are the following:

We use trigger warnings for all the topics on the Trigger Topics List and if we feel like it might be stressful for other people to read something. There are some key instructions on how to use a trigger warning:

  1. The warning should always be followed by a short description of the topic (e.g. “Trigger Warning: Domestic Abuse).

  2. During discussions, the triggering content can't directly follow the warning. Instead, there should be a short break and if someone doesn't want to be confronted with this topic, there should be an agreement on how long the topic will be discussed so that the person can leave and join again afterwards. Also, there should be trigger topic free discussions.

  • A: I’d like to share something, trigger warning: grief

  • B: I can’t deal with that right now, can I come back in 5 minutes?

  • A: Sure!

  • *A talks about grief for 5 minutes*

  • B: *after 5 minutes* Hey, I’m back

  • *the topic of the conversation gets switched*

  1. Even if you’ve put a trigger warning in front of your text, you’re not allowed to discuss traumatic experiences in detail or graphically. Try to focus on how it affected you instead.

(Outdated) Now, as promised, I've set up another survey to see how the rules on trigger warnings have been working. You can find the form here. (https://forms.gle/k7v5F3666rZt6PfT6)

I'll share the results in a few weeks. Please remember to stay respectful and constructive. Thank you for your feedback.

Take care

audienta

Update 4/5/2024: There have only been two responses to the survey. As it's been quite some time, I'll close the survey and let this topic go for now. If you still have feedback, please use this form. Thank you!

You can be removed from or added to the taglist here.

@audienta

Clarity on such things is so helpful, for our community users, while sharing and interacting with their peers here, creating the space as supportive, comfortable and safe as possible for each other. Thank you for putting this together.❤

@audienta thank you for this because now that there is such clarity, no one should be going into detail over anything, and 5-7 minutes is a good amount of time to talk about something topic sensitive. I believe this will help address the issues of members coming into the sessions to speak about it, then disappearing and still expect to share about it when someone else is speaking or the topic has been switched. Thank you for the clarity on this
