Writing a Letter to your inner Child
Acknowledging and interacting with your inner child is an extremely powerful way to connect with yourself.
What would you say if you could spend a moment with your 5 year old self? What about your 7,10, 15 year old self? We all have an inner little boy/girl and as life quickly happened, we built up hard outer skins to survive it. Its important for us to take time out to address our younger selves and show them the love they needed to mature and develop.
How to Write a Letter to Your Inner Child
Step 1
Find a quiet place where you feel safe to be open and vulnerable. Somewhere free from distractions and interruptions
Step 2
Imagine yourself in the most beautiful place on earth. What is the most beautiful place to you? Where is it? What does it feel like to be there? Try visualising it, feeling it, and connecting to this place.
Step 3
Try imagining yourself sitting somewhere in this beautiful place, and imagine that your five-year-old self has now come to sit with you. Then, connecting to yourself at five years of age, ask yourself as the adult what you would tell your younger self if given the chance. What did he or she need to know or hear at this age but was never told? If you could go back in time and encourage or affirm anything to your five-year-old self, what would you say?
Step 4
After taking some time to contemplate the questions above, try writing a letter to your five-year-old self. Please begin with ‘Dear [your name], and express everything that you would say to yourself as a five-year-old child if given the opportunity. Then, take a few slow, deep breaths and allow yourself fully to feel and experience whatever is true for you. Please notice any memories that arise from the past.
Step 5
Repeat steps three and four while connecting with your 10-year-old self, your 15-year-old self, and your 20-year-old self. Please feel free to do this with any additional age(s) if you feel inspired to do so.
Writing a Letter from Your Inner Child

Step 2
Imagine yourself in the most beautiful place on earth. What is the most beautiful place to you? Where is it? What does it feel like to be there? Visualize it, feel it, and connect to this place.
Step 3
Imagine yourself sitting somewhere in this beautiful place, and imagine that your five-year-old self has now come to sit with you. Then, connecting to yourself at five years of age, ask your five-year-old self what he or she wants to tell you as the adult. What does he or she want you to know or hear right now in your life? What wisdom and healing does your five-year-old self need to encourage in you as an adult right now?
Step 4
After taking some time to contemplate the questions above, please write a letter from your five-year-old self addressed to your adult self. Please begin with ‘Dear [your name], and express everything that your five-year-old self wants you, the adult, to know, hear and remember. Then, take a few slow, deep breaths and allow yourself fully to feel and experience whatever is true for you. Notice any situations or relationships that youre being guided to address in your life right now.

Thanks Rainbow. I'll certainly give this a try.
@MKJart Thanks MK, look forward to hearing yours too
Sometimes the inner child often gets neglected and goes unheard and so I thought I would post this here for those of you who wished to give this a shot :)
@dancingRainbow45
I've given the excersise a try at 5 yrs old. It has been eye opening and powerful, so I appreciate this post from you. I had a lot to share with her, but she's not saying anything back to me... yet. It feels scary and vulnerable to share the letter here. I may need to get more comfortable with the letter myself first. I look forward to trying it with other little me's too.
@MKJart Hey MK, if your not comfortable to share the letter here thats okay. You do what feels right for you. If you decide to share that would be lovely but if not thats okay too. Give time for your 5yr old to respond, perhaps they are not used to being communicated with, perhaps they are shy, or afraid. But well done for giving this a go, and yes it can make you feel quite vulnerable doing something like this but your also very brave for having been willing to give this a shot, so well done to you
@dancingRainbow45
Hi Rainbow,
I decided to share my letter to my 4-5 year old. It still feels vulnerable sending it, however, I got to thinking how I'd want any child from 0-18 years old, who was abused or neglected to know this too. Any adult who was assaulted as well by changing the sweet, innocent and needing affection to vulnerable, trusting and overpowered. Starting out it was intended just to my 4-5 year old self. The more I read it, it applies and speaks to other inner children and adults inside of me that need to hear it too. I really did do the best I could.
I really appreciate you posting this.
Dear Mary,
Youre safe now. Im here and I apologize for taking so long to reach out to you. I want so much to tell you how loved you are. You did the very best you could. There is nothing you could have done differently to have made it not happen. It is in no way your fault. Youre being sweet, innocent and needing affection is absolutely normal. That was taken advantage of by someone else and that in no way reflects on you as an amazing and lovable child. Your body responded normally, it was the behavior by a trusted caregiver that was horrible, not you. You deserve to have safe attention. You deserve to be loved. You deserve to be respected and treated with care. You deserve to be safe. You deserve to be heard and believed. Its safe to be seen and its safe to ask for help.
Im here now. What can I do for you? How can I help?
Anyway- She hasn't responded yet, so I'll keep reading it to her. Maybe she'll come around.
@MKJart I loved your reasons for deciding to share this MK and your letter is so moving. What strikes me so much is how you hold no anger, or blame or negativity towards your inner child, how your reaching out giving love, reassurance, attention and are being a parent to yourself
This is so beautiful and I am so glad you decided to share this and fought to overcome the feelings of vulnerability in sharing this letter. I hope in time, given patience, you get a response from the inner you
This is beautiful and rich. I love that you are allowing her to take her time in responding, and that you will be there, waiting for her whenehen she does.💜💞💝🎵
@dancingRainbow45 ... Hi Rain, would you please take me off this tag list? I'm pretty sure I'll get all of the threads and such since I'm in the Trauma Support sub-community. I don't see a note of 'click here for remove/add self.'
Also I like this idea of writing a letter to my younger self. I appreciate the suggestion and guidelines, and questions to answer and such. Little Platy would be glad to know how much I think of her - I think. Good night for now, Platy
I love writing to my child personalities, here is the link to the story I posted: https://www.7cups.com/forum/TraumaticExperiencesCommunity_60/DissociationDID_919/Creativespace_68610/
I wrote to my 5 year old part to help her understand integration.
@LifeIsMyCanvas This is so beautiful. I saw this some time ago when you posted it up before and was so amazed at your ability to write in a way that younger parts of you were able to try and understand the concept of integration which for alternate parts can be very threatening and scary, with some believing they are being got rid of or killed off etc. You beautifully capture in your story a less frightening outlook on integration and I hope it brought some comfort to your inner parts. Thank you for sharing this again with us
@LifeIsMyCanvas
Beautifully written- thank you for sharing.
This was really hard and it might be triggering but i needed to write it down and share it..
Dear lani,
Lets sit down and talk for a second. Hey slow down a little bit your thirteen years old this year is going to be hard as hell for you but trust me please think before you do things. One day you going to get so mad that you going to think you cant keep going cause you feel safe for a minute and you are home with your mom and you going to get mad at her for everything. You going to think you cant get thru it and you going to grab a whole bottle of pills actually three and you going to go to the hosiptal.But dont you end up living and you will get over being in foster care you going to make new friends at a new school you got this. There antheor thing you going to have to go thru some pretty rough shit you going to have a friend or what you think is a friend he going to ask you to come outside dont do it please you going to mess up your life to the point where you cant fix it.. That night yall going to have sex you not going to think much of it but then they going to start texting you his friends which is a lil and alot older than you they not going to stop. dont text them back please they going to rape you over and over You going to look back and wish you fought harder but trust me its not your fault you made it through it.. I'm going to take care of you the way you always should have been.Im going to help you stop hurting yourself im going to help you smile.You are the best little girl ever its okay to have fun and be a kid. Please dont give up.Im sorry i made that mistake im sorry for what you going through im going to be here for you no matter what im going to hold your hand when you cry im going to be there thru it all...
@Lanistarr04 So very brave for writing this and so powerfully written.
How does that inner child feel that you reached our to them? How did this feel to write for your inner child? You did not deserve to be hurt, you deserved to be safe, loved and protected and I am sorry that did not happen for you but now you are safe and you can safely express whatever you need to
@Rain45 it was hard cause all i wanted to do was grab her and just hold her and keep her safe from what was to come kinda like what i wanted in real life..... and awww thanks

@Lanistarr04 And maybe that is what someone should have given you Lani. Perhaps grab a comfort blanket and sit the two of you together and feel safe and be in the moment. And realise what should have been and just be. Dont judge that little girl and dont judge yourself and come to accept that what you went through was never your fault and you deserved to have been protected and kept safe
Love this Rain! And I think worth doing more than once or even to Self at different ages!
Thank you for this post...I need to find the courage to do this
@energeticPenny8 Courage!
This is very good, but I have a question. What if me the adult does not have any desirer to parent my inner child?
For some strange reason, I want her to remain hid and I feel that she was the cause of my suffering so no way do I want to love on her . She can stay where she is.
