Does trauma exist?

Adlerian psychology states there's no such thing as trauma. That it's our belief of an event that defines how we feel, not the event itself.

Freudian psychology states that it's our past traumas that define who we are, how we feel and shape who we become.

Thoughts?

Psych student here! “Trauma” is usually defined as a reaction to any kind of event that is deemed harmful, threatening, or damaging in nature. It’s what happens after the event, even more so than during, because it repeats in our heads long after the event is over.

Trauma has the ability to define who we become, but that doesn’t mean we equally don’t have the ability to heal from it. ♥️

@Mikey555

I believe trauma exists, but you could use Adlerian psychology to treat it. Shift your perspective so the pain makes sense.

Andrew Moskowitz is a Forensic Psychologist and he has a lecture about his book on YouTube tagged here: https://youtu.be/slta180wZ1o?si=t5J6RP62sNSjXhS8

He talks about how trauma is modern psychology is an event itself. The lecture is in 3 parts. What I have linked is Part 1.

I highly recommend watching it. I found it to be informative and fascinating. I watched it a few years ago when I was on beginning my mental health journey.
