Technology vs Real Connection

Technology makes it easier than ever to reach others. A message, a chat, or an app can help someone feel less alone in difficult moments. For many people, online spaces provide comfort and a sense of being heard when face-to-face support is not available.

At the same time, real human connection still feels different. Talking to someone in person, noticing their tone and body language, can create a deeper feeling of understanding and safety. Sometimes, even with constant online interaction, people may still feel emotionally distant.

I believe technology works best as a bridge, not a replacement. It can open doors to support, but meaningful connection depends on honesty, presence, and intention—whether online or offline.

How do you feel about this?

Does technology help you feel more emotionally connected, or do you still prefer traditional face-to-face conversations?

When going meta and using AI to talk about real connection (without acknowledging it's use in the post), I'm going to assume that it's fair to bring up the AI. I do find it a bit interesting, this seems to be a common topic with AI and AI also seems to love using the word human(s).

I think technology can be a great way to bridge human connection, but I need to sense the actual connection to someone. A quick text to my husband, a call with one of my parents or a friend, video chatting with young relatives, the relationships I have formed in online spaces are all real connections. I prefer to have my husband home, when travelling to the same city as some of my friends and parents I try to carve out time for visits, even if it's not the purpose for me being there, etc.

I also know how the technology can be more of a necessity. I think the pandemic exposed most people to a certain level of that. Not to everyone equally though. I was fairly middle of the road - WFH before that point, small household of 2. Health conditions and medications lead to my decision of being more careful than the typical healthy person, and I continued to avoid large crowds for quite a while even after being vaccinated until I hit a point where treatment options increased and contracting it eventually seem inevitable. I know others who were more cautious - not gathering even outside, still turning down any invitation with a large crowd, etc.

Going back to the AI - I understand it's use as a tool. I don't see it as a replacement for human connection, although that connection here is lacking for me. When someone I know uses AI software with text to speech, I still feel connected to what they are saying, I've known their own words before. Or maybe a friend shares something funny AI told them. Maybe one day I decide between my vision difficulties and typos it's best to get AI to fix my mistakes. I've only played with AI a little bit though and even with something I thought it would be good with - numbers and a specific tax situation it couldn't even correctly site a formula directly from an easily accessible government website. So at this point I'm not using it for proofreading my words.

You  and me though? I don't really know you. Why did you use AI?

I can look at your profile, you have listed Arabic and English. Maybe you feel more comfortable writing in Arabic and instead of using a clunky translation you let AI smooth it all over but most of these ideas are yours.

Maybe you had no ideas for a forum post and let AI run with it's own 'ideas' and you read this one over and liked it.

Maybe you didn't even read and comprehend this post and just want to boost your forum post stats. Without the acknowledgement and the reasoning that sense of connection for me is totally lost. I'm here though, writing, maybe it will bridge with you or maybe someone else who reads this.

@AffyAvo

I shared this post because the message resonated with me. I didn’t write it, and I don’t know its original source, but I liked the idea and felt it was worth sharing.

Sometimes we come across a picture or a post online that we like, and we simply share it — nothing more than that.

I’ve written many posts before, all from my own thoughts and imagination, using my own words.

This one is different. I didn’t write it; I shared it because the idea resonated with me and felt worth discussing.

Thank you for taking the time to read the post and respond. I appreciate your attention and input.

Hi.... There are no sources for this article... It was my idea, and I asked the AI to formulate it, that's all... And my observations were also included as input.

I'm so confused, lol. You just said that you didn't write it? Anyways, by citing I mean give credit to your inspiration or any tools that you use. :)

@Remina

I mean, I noted and wrote down the ideas and observations, and then I used an AI application. I wrote all of this down and asked it for help with the wording, or more precisely, how to present these ideas as a topic for discussion while taking into account the linguistic structure. That's all there is to it. That's what happened. I don't think I'll do this again.☺️

Hi, please do not let this feedback discourage you from making forum content but rather help you do better in the future. Your post talks about wanting real connection and it is about being authentic in replies. It is good to allow people to know where your ideas came from or how your post was written. Crediting things like this helps with transparency and authenticity.

@friendlyLight1447 I am definitely confused with your responses. To me you explained this:

"I shared this post because the message resonated with me. I didn’t write it, and I don’t know its original source, but I liked the idea and felt it was worth sharing ...

I didn’t write it; I shared it because the idea resonated with me and felt worth discussing.."

To me this suggests you came across it somewhere with no input by you other than maybe an input like a search result.

Then to Remina:

" It was my idea, and I asked the AI to formulate it, that's all... And my observations were also included as input" and

"I noted and wrote down the ideas and observations, and then I used an AI application. I wrote all of this down and asked it for help with the wording, or more precisely, how to present these ideas as a topic for discussion while taking into account the linguistic structure. "I noted and wrote down the ideas and observations, and then I used an AI application. I wrote all of this down and asked it for help with the wording, or more precisely, how to present these ideas as a topic for discussion while taking into account the linguistic structure. "

This is actively asking AI to write something for you, not just coming across something that someone wrote.

To me these are 2 different answers.

@AffyAvo

I’m sorry if my replies came across as confusing. The post reflects my own thoughts, and I used AI only to help me express them more clearly because English isn’t my first language. I appreciate you reading and sharing your thoughts.

P.s

The idea came from a real discussion I had with a high school student

@friendlyLight1447 That makes more sense, and I do appreciate you and others who have learned English as a 2nd or later language!

I wouldn't be able to have a meaningful conversation in another language!

Since this text was maybe written using AI, when people respond do you feel in connection with them and do they feel connected to you? AI is more complex than black and white. As you must know, it's a powerful tool that can be useful to find work or learn new languages and, by this fact, connect with others as well as it can isolate them. This completely depends on their ability to understand their own selves, their behavior, their tendencies and circle.

@CecileBrieur74 I understand there's nuance and I explained a few reasons why someone might use it to improve their ability to communicate here.

When there's no context though? I mind the ai just limits connection. I have found places on the internet have become impersonal so that's probably part of my disconnect when I sense ai is being used. A note about the context of why ai is being used helps to break down some of that wall.

I believe both face to face and online bring people closer or distant to each other depends on how people use it. I definitely agree with face to face being a superior choice in human connection as it is in our nature to do so, however, due to fear of judgements and chaotic nature of face to face communication a lot of people prefer texting and doing things online as they can either polish or hide their own identity. The emergence of new technology surely bought changes to how we offer support with our fellows but i believe utilizing them properly will allow us the best of both worlds.

@friendlyLight1447 For me, a real connection is rare, even in a real family. Technology does help, but it can't replace real emotions or communication.

@friendlyLight1447 No, technology doesn't make me feel emotionally connected but it help me to regulated my emotional better, I mean like you were able to talk some stuff you cannot talk with real people.

@friendlyLight1447 Yeah, if possible, I much prefer traditional face to face conversation but ofc with a condition of the counterpart to talk is highly knowledgeable and have a high insight.

I don't mind either actually. In person you can see someone's face and reactions, so it's easier to read them and not misunderstand..

But online has it's place for me also because of my conditions and mistrust. It's safer for me and it's easier to walk away and disconnect.

I'm not really seeking the connections I used too. I actually prefer solitude. People are draining!
