Hi Emmy Marie!  So apparently I am late to the party (anyone surprised?), but I saw your post or a comment or something tonight.

I read about the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, your first dog of the day here.  You have found some beautiful pictures!  He is very handsome.  This breed, or this particular dog?, looks a lot like my Australian Shepherd :)  [ I love you! #MyBuddy ]  The Duck Tolling Ret. was bred for a different purpose and is much newer (recognized in 2003) - I had not heard of them at all.  Of course, Aussie's were not bred in Australia and they are a herding breed, Australian-no, shepherd-yes! ... but these pictures remind me so much of my boy, who I miss so dearly. 

If all these facts and standards are so for the Duck Tolling Ret, then Aussies are similar in these ways: they need work; they are super! and very intelligent (& as a result, they can get themselves into trouble! if not busy).  They are generally not good for very first time pet owners.  They have tons of energy and can run, work, or herd all day.  They would prefer to live at maybe a house with a big backyard, on an acreage, or at a farm - some place to run!!  They do get tired out and like to have their very own spot for evenings/nights with owner or family. 

My Aussie was great with kids and families.  He was a lovely amazing heartbeat-and-breathing-pillow for me.  My baby had the most amazing way of allowing me to fall asleep *on* him, and then moving away at just the right time and pace so as not to wake me.  #SFO  #MissYou !!!

Yall, meet the beautiful Flat Coated Retriever

this medium sized breeds liniage is believed to come from Newfoundlands, setter type dogs, sheepdogs, spaniels and other water type dogs. bred to be a hunting dog, but today excel as a family dog, as well as a therapy companion. they were englands most popular breed till the lab, and golden retriever too reign, and the population of the flatcoat has since dwindled. they are a relatively rare breed, but still with an estimated population of 120,000 dogs. 

Flatcoats are known to be extremely affectionate with family and excellent with kids and other pets. Cheerful, optimistic, and good humored, they would make a wonderful family pet. They have boundless amounts of energy, and constantly want to play. they are highly trainable, as well as highly adaptable. 

These dogs would not be suited for apartment living due to their high energy and size. as long as you can take care of their energy needs, these dogs would make a great first time dog. with their loving, easygoing nature and their love for play, they are an easier breed to handle. 

As most dog breeds do, some come with a higher chance of diseases, illness, disorders exc. Flat coated Retrievers are relatively healthy dogs but tend to be prone to a large number of heath issues.....Hip Dysplasia (common in dogs, occurs when the hip joint has not developed properly and the bone does not sit properly in the socket) Gastric Dialation and Vovlus (typically occurs in dogs with deep chests, fluid or gas biulds up in the gastrics) Cataracs (disease that affects the eye) Basal cell tumbors (typically bengin (typically bengin, these are growths upon the skin) dialated cardiomypathy (heart issues. ) and are prone to cancer. 

Its important to remember that all dogs are different, and aside from basic needs of all dogs, each breed has personalized needs. these dogs with their work drive and energy would requre lots of mental stimulation. despite them being a less challanging breed to care for, its important to remember if any dog's needs are not met depression could arise. Depressed dogs tend to appear bored, prefer to not listen to handlers/owners, and can develop behavior disorders such as barking, digging holes, or getting reckless or easily excited around people. 

remember, having a dog is not always a walk in the park. health issues should be expected and prepared for, as well as being aware of potential behavior issues and how to fix them is always important. if your dog has behavior issues, know that its not the dogs fault. it could be old habits from ex owners or things that you as their owner have failed to teach them or do with them :)

Be sure to always do your research before getting a dog and its breed to be sure that it has the potential to be happy in your current living situation. be sure to not get a dog just because you think its cute. prepare yourself, and see what breeds could match your lifestyle!

Everyone, lay your eyes upon the Australian Kelpie. 

Coming from Scotland, this medium sized breed was bred in the late 1800'ds. Coming from the Scottish smooth collie, they work very well herding livestock (as they were bred to do) and are still used for this job today. This breed is an incredibly rare find despite the 100,000 that are used as working dogs today. Today, they are slowly gaining popularity not only as a working dog, but also as a family companion too. 

This breed is extremely energetic, and would love to have a job or activity of some sort to do. they are quite trainable, and pretty adaptable too. they do well in the family setting with their gentle nature, overall friendliness, intellect and alertness. They do shed a little bit more, but have low grooming needs to make up for it. 

The Kelpie would not do well in the apartment setting due to their high amounts of energy. Because of their intelligence and energy they would not be a wise choice for a new owner as well, but for experienced owners, would make a wonderful pet. 

As most dog breeds do, some come with a higher chance of diseases, illness, disorders exc. The Australian Kelpie is a relatively healthy dog when given the right living conditions, but tends to be prone to Hip Dysplasia (common in dogs, occurs when the hip joint has not developed properly and the bone does not sit properly in the socket)  Progressive retinal atrophy (When a dog reaches adulthood and the cells in eyes begin to break down causing slow but progressive blindness) and Cerebral atrophy (inherited degenerative disease that kills off cells in the cerebellum) 

Its important to remember that all dogs are different, and aside from basic needs of all dogs, each breed has personalized needs. these dogs are intelligent and would require a bit of mental stimulation. These dogs have extremely high energy, and would require at least 2 - 3 hours of exercise and play each day. its important to remember if any dog's needs are not met depression could arise. Depressed dogs tend to appear bored, prefer to not listen to handlers/owners, and can develop behavior disorders such as barking, digging holes, or getting reckless or easily excited around people.

BEST FIRST TIME DOGS FOR NOVICE OWNERS

Many people who first buy a dog, make the mistake of not doing through research, or ignoring the warnings saying that this breed may not be the best choice for first dogs. so here i am sharing some the best voted dog breeds for first time dogs. 

Coming in first, is the classic Labrador Retriever

WIth a few coat variations, this breed is the number one in america, residing in homes of new owners, as well as experienced owners. Known to be active, friendly, and outgoing they are extremely affectionate towards family, children and do very well with other pets. to fall into a diverse area in the work force due to their friendly nature, train-ability.  

Next we have the also iconic, golden retriever. 

Friendly, loving, intelligent and devoted, the golden retriever would also make a superb choice for new owners. Extremely affectionate towards family, children and good with other pets, this dog also falls into a wide variety of working jobs, but most iconically the family pet. 

Next come to surprise many is the Boxer. 

known to be active, bright, and fun loving, this affectionate dog would make a surprising great choice for new owners. maturing slowly, they are loved for this trait, keeping a puppy like attitude throughout many years of their life. This dog is also among the most popular breeds in america. also in a wide range of occupations, they sometimes qualify for police K-9's. 

Up next, is a breed i have a liking for. meet the Bernese Mountain Dog

This large, loving, good natured, strong companion has gained a lot of popularity recently in America. with proper training, this breed would make a fine addition to the home, Super outgoing and friendly, this dog would make a cute cuddly addition to the family. 

Another surprising breed is the Greyhound!

despite being known as the worlds fastest dog breed, ironically they are pretty laid back and sometimes known to have a lazy side to them. known to be independent, sweet, gentle, and noble, they make a wonderful addition to the family with their affectionate personality. 

another personal favorite breed, is the Collie. no, not border collie, but the traditional Collie. 

known to have 2 different coat types, Rough (more hair) and smooth (less fur) The collie is devoted, proud, and graceful. equip with a variety of coat colors such as black try, Merle, and sable coloring, this beautiful canine is very affectionate with family, easily trained, and a very good family pet with the ideal gentleness, friendliness, and good natured personality. 

Another surprising breed to some is the Great Dane. 

despite its threatening looks and huge size this dog is actually a lazy goofball, known to be a gentle giant, friendly, patient, and dependable, these fellas are extremely affectionate, protective, and a wonderful family bet so long you can handle the drool and the size. 

another favorite breed of mine is the gorgeous Irish setter.  

said to be among one of, if not the, most beautiful dogs with their bright, typically shiny, red fur.  this active, sweet natured, and outgoing breed would make a fantastic addition to the home for first time owners with its loving personality towards all family members, strangers and so on, and ability to be trained. 

this next breed is on my to do list for my dog of the day series. the springier spaniel. 

known to be playful, friendly, and obedient this pup is very affectionate, and loving towards the family. they would make a good choice to bring home so long as properly trained (as any dog) from a young age. 

The famous German Shepherd is also among one of the greatest first time dogs. 

another incredibly famous and loved breed, German shepherds are known to be courageous, confidant, and smart. with a special kind of affection and love for its family, they not only protect and defend the family, but they will also be loving companions. 

another top breed for me personally, the Bassett hound, is also a great choice

This famous dog known for its stubby legs, low key attitude, and droopy face this lazy dog makes a great buddy to chill with. its recomended to keep these dogs in pairs or have another dog in the home because of their sociable personality, but these dogs make great family pets. just watch out for that nose, cause when nose is on, ears are off. 

there are far more exelent breeds out there, such as the french bulldog, yorkshire terrier, poodle, Whippet, Boston terrier, (personally debatable the beagle...just because they are difficult to train) shi-tzu, pug and many other breeds. but look around and see what breeds could potentially fit your lifestyle best!

sorry yall its been one busy week. end of the term, so lots of tests to study for and a surplus of assignments to work on as well as last minute missing assignments. ending the term with 5 A's though so I'm pretty content with that. 

ANYWAY everyone, this is the Catahoula Leopard Hound

The Catahoula Leopard hound comes from that American state or of Louisiana. Made up of the Spanish Mastiff, bloodhound, American Dingo, and its believed to have some Native American breeds and possibly Beauceron (a previous dog of the day) as well. Early English settlers developed this breed in the mid 1700'ds in an attempt to make a better working dog. The Catahoula can be used as a bay dog, stock dog, watch dog, tree dog, guard dog, as well as loving loyal companions. 

Known to be Independent, loyal, and watchful, the Catahoula is a loving breed that does well around children and other dogs. They can be open to strangers, but are still a very watchful breed. They have very high energy, but aside from their independence they can be very trainable. watch out for their independence during training, independent dogs can typically be stubborn, making them difficult to train at times. 

as a breed bred to work, the Catahoula would love to have a job to do, thus making it a poor choice for the apartment setting. they need lots of room to get all their energy out. they also would make a poor choice for first time owners, due to their energy, and sometimes challenging personalities.

These dogs are intelligent, hand have copious amounts of energy. they would (as any dog) need lots of training, exersise, and mental stimulation. it would need room to play and get all its energy out, especially if its just a family dog. its important to remember if any dog's needs are not met depression could arise. Depressed dogs tend to appear bored, prefer to not listen to handlers/owners, and can develop behavior disorders such as barking, digging holes, or getting reckless or easily excited around people.

Hey everyone. meet the Treeing Tennessee Brindle.

Another breed originating from the U.S, they were bred along the Appalachian and Ozark Mountains which stretch from New York to Alabama. Bred to be a hunting partner, they are set with a good nose, a good voice,  and the ability to tree many kinds of animals. Treeing dogs use a method of hunting where the dog scares the animal, forcing it to climb up the tree for refuge, where the hunter then takes the game. 

The Tennessee Brindle Is affectionate, intelligent, and friendly. While they still have strong hunting instincts, they make wonderful family pets with their affection towards family and semi protective nature. they are somewhat open to strangers. they are a non aggressive breed, an ideal trait for the family setting. 

These dogs might do well for new owners because of their friendliness, "easiness" to train, intelligence, and even though they are a high energy dog with the high energy dog needs, they also enjoy lounging around the house. although they are an adaptable breed, they are not recommended for apartment living.
