Ask Me Anything with Laura!

Hi Everyone,

In a recent survey, many of you voiced that you'd like the admin to be a little bit more approachable. As many of you know, I get many messages every day, so it can be hard to keep up with PMs. However, I thought it would be fun to create a thread where you can ask me some questions as a group.

You can ask questions about our community, my role here or about me. I am happy to share and engage with you all to the best of my ability.

Thank you for joining in!

So .... Ask away!

@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn might be an idea to ask seasoned listeners as I am a newbie...there may be other categories that people would appreciate or even name their own category not sure..I like the support stream helps see how you place members in the support provided as I do checks in and follow ups and it is working really well...and some of course would like to chat again as well....each day I have to scroll to see who is whom and what level they require takes time,,,I think as well it speaks to the value of connectedness on here like the welcome old members on your lists....it will be built in reminder to do so.....just a thought....

Hi. I was wondering if it would be possible for Notifications and Alerts to not disappear when I've clicked on one. When I go back to see what else was there, sometimes they are gone. It's kinda frustrating. It's such a good way to go back into threads and such.

@yzzil - yes this is frustrating sorry. right now some disappear (forum) and some don;t (feed). There are some pros and cons to each (it is harder to delete the ones that don't vanish), but I hear your frustration.

In the long run I'd like use to keep track of all your notifications and whether you've "read" (clicked on them or not) and then have you delete them if you want or just ignore the ones in the "history" -- but we're not there yet :\

@yzzil - that's a good reminder. sometimes when we can't do what is being asked quickly we feel bad but we need to let everyone know we have heard the idea and like it but just can't get it done quite yet.

Hi @Laura

This is a question that I asked my mentor and she gave me a detailed answer yet I am still a bit uncomfortable so I am going to ask you too.

This is a general question in liue of the last school shooting in Florida but really address all similar incidents when a person threaten to do something which is criminal and a threat to the community at large. If someone like that encounter a listener on 7 cups what is the listener obligation?

Not really talking and developing a conversation is pretty obvious but any other actions should be taken?

You and me know that an IP address can be opened so the answer I normally get that the person cannot be identified is false.

I will appreciate your answer.

Also I was asked about mandate reporters and couldn't find information on the site. Probably just missed it.

Thanks again for your input.

@endearingLion70 - Hi, I just saw this and it's a very good question.

I'd say there are both legal and ethical considerations.

Legally, some people (like licensed psychologists and often teachers or counselors) are called "mandatory reporters" and are obliged by law to report when they believe someone is a danger to themselves or others.

Volunteer listeners are not legally bound by these regulations. Nonetheless, prudence suggests that if as a listener one is ever concerned that a member (or other site participant) may be in danger or may be potentially a danger to others, we would strongly encourage you to contact site administrators or the support desk and describe what you are worried about so that we can take any steps we feel we can to address a potentially risky situation.

Basically, if in doubt, please find someone on the site to discuss such questions with.

Hi,@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn

Glad someone found a moment to respond.

I agree with you that when in doubt it is better to notify someone, however 'someone' is a somewhat general term, don't you agree?

@endearingLion70 - Yes, good point. Here are some suggestions:
- contact a listener mentor
- go to LSR and ask how to report the situation
- make a support request
- reach out to @laura, @kate or any other admin directly
