- How do you prepare for the empty nest phase, and what are some common emotions you are feeling when your child leaves home? I celebrated my freedom at first. Let my child take anything she wanted to move out to her new home.
- I actually wanted to celebrate and help her get her new home set up.
- What are some of the potential challenges you faced in adjusting to an empty nest, and how did you navigate these challenges? Nobody to talk and laugh with. Nobody to run errors. No go do person anymore. Nobody to make wash the dishes or clean up the house. Now, everything would be my job to do. That kind of did not set well. Now I had no one to do what I said or wanted them to. She would be her own boss and keeper. Then I felt the brunt of the empty nest.
- Are there any positive aspects to the empty nest phase such as newfound freedom or opportunities for personal growth, and how can you make the most of this period? There are always positives to most things but for me learning to step back and let her make mistakes and not interfere or try to rescue her was my biggest problem. I did not want to see her make bad choices that would come back and bite her.
- Big lesson, stand back let them get the scrapes and scares they will learn better lessons that are lasting❤️
@WorkingitThrough2
i totally understand it is such a shift! Love the advice let those leaving home find their own way. Thank you for sharing. 💕💕💕💕💕💕
I appreciate your post. I’m really struggling with the empty nest. If feels like my life is over.
@HappyDucky8
I totally get the empty nest syndrome. To be honest I felt that way at first. However, I had a dream that really spoke to me. The dream basically said that when she was a little child you could tell her what to do and she did it. Now she has become a young lady and I know it is hard for you mothers to lose that control. But they will never get their bearings if you stay in the way and are trying to still mother them. Step back as hard as it may be let them fall and scar themselves up. Knowing that you have laid a good foundation for them, Trust your rearing. They will be ok. We can try to share our experiences but the best-known secret is they learn better by their own trials and errors. Trust your higher power to keep them❤️
@HappyDucky8
So sorry you are struggling it is a transition period for sure the new normal. 🤗 Have you been doing some self care? I understand totally my son left for university this year …. I have been keeping busy! It helps me. I also keep in contact and visit him on the weekends.
This is how I am feeling too. Is this group still chatting? Last post two months ago, I am looking for a group of moms struggling with this to chat with.
@cinnamonelephant3294
You can still post here it pops to the top and continue the conversation …
My son is in university he is settling well in engineering faculty. I am only now just starting to get used to him being gone. He comes home twice a semester for long weekends. Otherwise I take him out to lunch every second week.
I don't want to sound like I don't like my kids because I love them all, I have had 4 leave home and can't wait for the last one (he's 15) to go....lol....I think the thing that helped me throughout was that they all went one at a time, so I was basically never without if that makes sense.....with the last one at 15, he basically comes and goes as he pleases(within parental reasoning of course)....between sports, school and his social life, he's rarely here anyway and I'm getting used to the alone time at home with my girlfriend....I'm actually looking forward to it, if that makes sense....
@CyclingThroughLife
Hoor.....ray😂 love it❤️

- How do you prepare for the empty nest phase, and what are some common emotions you are feeling when your child leave home? I cried when my daughter went off to college. I did start writing poetry and that helped me get accomodated to the change.
- What are some of the potential challenges you faced in adjusting to an empty nest, and how did you navigate these challenges? Relationships based on taking care of the kids can change and one needs to reinvent and rejuvenate relationships especially if there are pre-existing problems.
- Are there any positive aspects to the empty nest phase such as newfound freedom or opportunities for personal growth, and how can you make the most of this period? I think one can step out of the role as parent and start exploring one's meaning and purpose in life. It is a whole new life if one lets go. Otherwise there can be lots of sadness.
@SunShineAlwaysGrateful
I don't think you can fully prepare when your child leaves home. When they first go to college it's hard, but then they come home for summer. It's when they leave and you know they aren't coming back that it hits really hard. The house is always a little emptier. They're gone, their stuff is gone.
It's a matter of keeping yourself busy, getting out of the house, and remember to focus on your own needs and future.
@thoughtfulmomma I hear you. When they come home summers they are partially based at home.
When they get an apartment and live 30 hours away by car it is a sudden separation. That is painful too.
@thoughtfulmomma
My son just left for university a five year program …. I am adjusting the house is definitely quieter … it is an adjustment … I feel like I need a new schedule or something bc school kept me on track …
@SunShineAlwaysGrateful I hear you.
@SunShineAlwaysGrateful
"school kept me on track"
YES. As a mom, we lived by our kid's school schedule. It told us when to get up, when to leave the house, what lunch was going to be, when you came home, what you were doing in the evening, how you planned your weekends... all of it. For 12 years we were So and So's Mom or Mrs. So and So to everyone at the school.
When they leave home, we lose that schedule, and it's very confusing and we just feel "off." We have to create a whole new routine, schedule, life that is based on us and our needs rather than our kids. And it's hard. And sometimes sad. It took me a while to start being okay with doing my own things, but I still struggle with all of it.
Tagging. @Emmat62.
So, both of my kids left the nest (mostly) within three months of each other. The younger one, we see sometimes, as they return home on some weekends. The other one moved to another location for a job. I keep reminding myself that both being out of our home to "try their wings" is a good thing - it means we did our job as parents and our kids have the confidence and emotional intelligence to explore, learn, and grow. But - it's still heartbreaking for us, even as it is giving us "room" to do new things that we otherwise would not with having a full house most of the time.
Yes, we have Messenger, WhatsApp, etc., but it's not the same. Also, our animals are very upset and listless, still searching for their "people" (our kids were very close with our animals). My and my partner's lives are very much in transition this year, at most levels, and this all came together this year in a "perfect storm" of midlife stress and challenges.
Not sure if there is a "Sandwich Generation" thread here, but if not - our relatives are all around 80 years old, with multiple health issues (including some kind of dementia), and trying to manage our kids being "gone" and our relatives needing much more support (when our health isn't so great either) has felt like an avalanche, to be honest.
I'm not looking for answers, so much as just venting into a quiet space - and wondering if others here have or are experiencing similar. Thanks.
I fully understand the demands of life at this age with parents not well. My mom had two further strokes after a broken hip this fall … and my son is fine to university. He only comes home for long weekends twice a term.
it is definitely transition time indeed. The new normal will take time to adjust for your family animals as well 🤗.
Health is something to never take for granted ourselves I try to take better care of myself and preserve the function I have.
So sorry this has been tough and know you are not alone.
I am so glad you posted and here at 7cups. It helps to connect and vent any time … we got you here always.
@Cranberry6511
I really can resonate with you❤️. It is very hard to handle all the changes and then to have elderly parents and in-laws that need our help, plus the animals that we wind up becoming their sole keepers, is quite a bit.
It was tough at first because I had become so accustomed to her being in the home. They started out calling frequently, and then the calls got fewer and fewer. My husband thought it was great, but I missed my child. Got really close to God during that transition😂. I survived and finally accepted that I had done my best, and now I had to take off my apron and let go.😊
Then one day I heard a noise, and I ran to the window to see what was the matter and what should appear to my wondering eyes but the Daughter had boomeranged right back to the nest😂. Now I really appreciate the time I had alone even more. I love her to pieces but I wish she would go back out on her own. Life dished her some very bad experiences and now she is back under the shelter of Mom and Dad😂LOL I have learned to Be careful what you wish for LOL😊❤️
For me, I think the best thing I can do for my kids is to help prepare them to be independent adults. I always imagined I would be thrilled to see my kids embark on this journey, the freedoms of independence, etc etc., like I would live this vicarious experience through their experiences.
Now I have 1 kid in college and one in high school and it is a bittersweet thing. I am thrilled when my kids demonstrate their independence and really start to develop into their own unique beings. Yet at the same time I feel this selfish desire to hold them close. Sooo... when college kid comes home for the holidays, I am hoping that he'll enjoy spending time with his local friends but also bake cookies with me. My younger kid will have Christmas break as well and I hope to do some fun stuff with him as well. I just want to be a good parent, support my kids, and have a great relationship with them.
@DancingSongbird579
I can tell that you are already a good mom. I also know how hard it is to let go❤️. We are here with you to keep supporting you along the way😊.
