I could hardly imagine not being able to be in contact with family and friends around the world via the internet so I'm very grateful for electricity.

With electricity, I have light at night. I can listen to music, watch movies, read, go on the internet, etc. My lawnmower is electric.
I have imagined what life was like before electricity. I've read many novels and stories written before electricity and picture what is going on in those stories, with candles and gas lamps.
@WharfRat
You mentioned about lawn mover, it reminded me of the old style lawn mowers which you had to push manually - it was so hard! Cutting with an electric one is so much easier!
@amiablePeace77 I used to use those 1 CP mowers when I was a child
CP = child powered LOL
@soulsings
That's funny!!! I hope it wasn't a reel mower. I used one to help environment and also not have to run to get gas for it. It truly made my lungs, and my muscles stronger, but I wasted a lot of water on showers, because I would get so tired, I would have to come in to cool off before going again, equaling three quick showers each cutting!
@amiablePeace77 I was without electricity for a few months after some hurricanes and I missed it so much! It was so dark at night but fortunately we had a flashlight to find our way around. Electricity really hasn’t been around so long and I feel extremely grateful for it.
@adventurousBranch3786
I can only imagine how difficult it must have been without electricity for a few months. I experienced it for a few days and everyone was already begging to get back electricity. Do you have a generator?
@amiablePeace77. I don’t but it might be something worth looking into!
We lived in the country and often did not have electricity. For internet service we had to go to the library or a net bar. We did see other people there, so that was not so bad. Going without electricity was not so bad with a few exceptions...in winter not having a refrigerator for food wasn't much of a problem but not having a blower to send warm air from the wood furnace into the rest of the house wasn't particularly pleasant. The biggest problem, though was not having water pumped into the house for baths and dishes, etc...luckily we still had hand pump in a couple wells for that, and propane gas powered stove and oven to heat water for those things, just time consuming. I don't care about TV but a radio is nice. A crank or battery powered work fine, though.
@adaptableOcean4193 very interesting how you adapted. Thank you for sharing.
We could take a lesson from the Amish... I think we rely too much on modern technology.
@EmbStitcher33
I'm curious which items you would throw out first? I already know which ones I would And I wonder if we would agree
@adaptableOcean4193 "I'm curious which items you would throw out first? I already know which ones I would And I wonder if we would agree"
Very good question.
I live very far away from my family so not sure I would give up my phone but I would give up all the fancy apps that clutter my phone and rarely use anyway. Well, do use maps when we travel to see family so we don't get lost...lol... but then years ago I did use paper maps...
I wish I knew how to survive off the land...know about what plants are good to eat and which ones to stay away from. I would bring back the big fire places that warmed families and gave them a meeting place to talk, share their day with.
I like the Internet but what's wrong with going to the library? I'd like to shut down any tech that records my every move. Don't need to use a device to count my steps if I'm outside busy chopping wood and doing other chores.
I wish I knew enough about survival that I wouldn't panic when the lights go out... And I'd wish for cleaner air...ergo... less or no cars... I want to see an invention for travel that uses nothing that will hurt the Earth. Remember how clear the skies became after the 9/11 attack, and all airports were put on lock-down? Doesn't take long for the air to clear once we stop pumping poison into it...
These are some ideas... have more but interested in what you would 'roll back' 😊
@EmbStitcher33
first things to go are microwave, air fryer, dishwasher, tv, any lights that are not solar or candle powered.
I still want the phone and computer though, and internet access. I write letters to keep up with friends and family, but since I can no longer drive and do not see well, I need the phone or computer to zoom cooking directions and important documents and to reach my medical information, make appointments and for alarms and reminders.
I would like to have a three wheeled bike, preferably electric just in case my legs give out too soon. Or I could just rest a bit in the middle of my ride as I only could use it to get to the neighborhood pool a about a mile and half away.
I have always wanted one of those huge fireplaces to cook, warm the home, and sit around with family! I would settle just sitting together for a meal once in awhile. I prefer a gas log splitter though, over an axe. It is a lot of work. I have often cooked over a wood or coal stove. it isn't too hard.
@adaptableOcean4193
My grandma had a stove that you put wood in to bake with... boy was I young when she had that one. Then she got a stove and they brought in a pot belly stove to heat the kitchen and the room above. (Had registers in the floor). I totally agree on you needing your computer and Internet, and I agree with the solar power. I just think we could better utilize that power. Guess I'd like the computer then too, but I am real staunch on anything that would hurt the environment.... are any of the components in that computer made in from mined raw resources by people who get slave wages for digging them up? I want more equity for those people, even if it means I pay a hundred dollars more for a computer... or more... whatever. I hate seeing people being exploited.
And I see your point about the axe...lol. As long as the splitter was a sort of solar contraption, It'd be okay with me...
Loved your response, thank you 😁
@EmbStitcher33
I wish everyone thought like you. Even if we couldn't make it perfect, just cutting back on the things we don't particularly need that damage the Earth would make a huge difference
@EmbStitcher33
Our societies become dependent on modern technology. I believe it's good to know how to do things when technology fails like for example how to keep things cool for a while when there is no electricity.
@amiablePeace77
I never really learned that one. We didn't have a air conditioning but did use electric fans and when it was really hot, a pan of ice in front of them. That still takes electricity so other than that it was sleeping out on the hood of the car where there was at least a breeze.
